Bovine mastitis is an emerging disease that causes large economic losses. Staphylococcus aureus its main etiological agent, is multi-resistant to antimicrobials and produces biofilm. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of Agave fructans (AF), a type of prebiotic, on multi-resistant and biofilm-forming isolates of S.

Background: is one of the main microorganisms that causes bovine mastitis, and its well-known virulence characteristics and interactions with the environment are used to aid the design of more efficient therapies.

Objectives: To determine whether the virulence traits, such as antibiotic resistance and biofilm-forming and internalization abilities, of isolated from bovine mastitis are related to dairy production system types.

Methods: The study was performed in the Mexican states of Guanajuato and Michoacan.

Plant defensins, a group of antimicrobial peptides, show selective cytotoxicity toward cancer cells. However, their mechanisms of action remain poorly understood. Here, we evaluated the cytotoxicity of PaDef defensin from avocado (Persea americana var.

Article Synopsis
  • Environmental risk assessment (ERA) evaluates whether genetically modified (GM) crops, specifically insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant maize hybrids, could pose increased pest potential or environmental harm compared to conventional maize.
  • Studies conducted across five ecoregions in Mexico from 2009-2013 showed no significant differences in aspects like stand count and lodging between GM hybrids and conventional maize, indicating minimal ecological risks.
  • While some phenotypic differences were noted in seedling vigor and grain characteristics, these differences are not expected to lead to ecological risks, suggesting that the GM hybrids can effectively protect crops from insect damage without additional environmental concerns.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are cytotoxic to cancer cells; however, mainly the effects of AMPs from animals have been evaluated. In this work, we assessed the cytotoxicity of PaDef defensin from avocado (Persea americana var. drymifolia) on the MCF-7 cancer cell line (a breast cancer cell line) and evaluated its mechanism of action.

Article Synopsis
  • Mexico is taking action to preserve its maize varieties and minimize gene flow between transgenic and conventional maize through spatial isolation.
  • The study assessed outcrossing rates between yellow-kernel (transgenic) and white-kernel (conventional) maize at various distances, finding that outcrossing was highest (12.9%) at 1 meter and decreased significantly with distance.
  • The results indicate that implementing spatial isolation can effectively reduce the risk of transgenic pollen contaminating local maize varieties in Mexico, supporting coexistence strategies used in other regions.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen of plants and animals, which produces virulence factors in order to infect or colonize its eukaryotic hosts. Cyclodipeptides (CDPs) produced by P. aeruginosa exhibit cytotoxic properties toward human tumor cells.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are part of the innate immune defense mechanism of many organisms and are promising candidates to treat infections caused by pathogenic bacteria to animals and humans. AMPs also display anticancer activities because of their ability to inactivate a wide range of cancer cells. Cancer remains a cause of high morbidity and mortality worldwide.

Antimicrobial therapy is a useful tool to control infectious diseases in general and rising antibiotic resistant microorganisms in particular. Alternative strategies are desirable, and antimicrobial peptides (AMP) represent attractive control agents. Mexican avocado (Persea americana var.

Avocado is one of the most important fruits in the world. Avocado "native mexicano" (Persea americana var. drymifolia) seeds are widely used in the propagation of this plant and are the primary source of rootstocks globally for a variety of avocado cultivars, such as the Hass avocado.

Unlabelled: Transplant renal artery stenosis (TRAS) is a cause of severe post transplant hypertension with a widely variable reported incidence from 1 to 25%. We herein report 3 cases of endoluminal stent placement after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty for treatment of TRAS. Clinical and laboratory findings during their follow-up, suggestive of TRAS included: elevated mean blood pressure, bruit over the graft area(2/3), and increase in serum creatinine (2/3).
