Porous nanomaterials have shown great promise in many desalination applications. Zeolite nanotubes, featuring abundant but inhomogeneous nanopores on their surface, have been recently synthesized in experiments; however, their capacity for desalination is not yet understood. In this work, we use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the capability of assembled zeolite nanotube membranes to perform in desalination applications due to their inherent multiscale porous properties.

Chordomas are rare, generally slow-growing spinal tumors that nonetheless exhibit progressive characteristics over time, leading to malignant phenotypes and high recurrence rates, despite maximal therapeutic interventions. The tumors are notoriously resistant to therapies and are often located in regions that complicate achieving gross total resections. Cell lines from these tumors are rare as well.

Pathology of rheumatoid meningitis: A report of 5 cases highlighting the importance of clinical correlation.

Rheumatoid meningitis (RM) presents with sufficiently wide-ranging, but non-specific, symptoms and neuroimaging features of pachy- and/or leptomeningeal thickening that it may be indistinguishable from subacute infectious meningitis. RA diagnosis variably antedates RM and serological confirmation by rheumatoid factor and anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies may not be present preoperatively. Thus, meningeal biopsy may be undertaken.

Single-arm Cohort Study on the Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Radiation Treatment of Cancer Patients Referred to the Radiation Oncology Division of a Tertiary Hospital.

Objective: This study aimed to identify the effects of COVID-19 pandemic on radiation treatment delays, interruptions, and cancer outcomes if any, in a Philippine tertiary hospital.

Methods: A retrospective observational cohort study was conducted among patients living with cancer who were referred for radiation therapy from March to July 2020. Data on treatment delays, treatment interruptions, and average treatment times were collected and analyzed.

Metabolic Pathophysiology of Cortical Spreading Depression: A Review.

Cortical spreading depression (CSD) is an electrophysiologic pathological state in which a wave of depolarization in the cerebral cortex is followed by the suppression of spontaneous neuronal activity. This transient spread of neuronal depolarization on the surface of the cortex is the hallmark of CSD. Numerous investigations have demonstrated that transmembrane ion transport, astrocytic ion clearing and fatigue, glucose metabolism, the presence of certain genetic markers, point mutations, and the expression of the enzyme responsible for the production of various arachidonic acid derivatives that participate in the inflammatory response, namely, cyclooxygenase (COX), all influence CSD.

Effect of application of dental varnishes on the properties and chemical composition in irradiated teeth.

Aims: To analyze the protective properties of fluor dental varnishes in teeth subjected to radiotherapy.

Methods And Results: Eighty teeth were irradiated with a single dose of 60 Gy. Samples were randomized, and the following groups were made: negative control (n = 16); irradiation control (n = 16); irradiation + Duraphat (n = 16); irradiation + Mi Varnish (n = 16); and irradiation + Rivastar (n = 16).

Background: Diabetes distress (DD) is a prevalent concern among people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and is linked to poor clinical outcomes. Instead of targeting the elimination of DD, we propose a novel approach that empowers individuals with strategies to manage their diabetes effectively in the context of DD: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The purpose of this in-progress trial is to compare an ACT group intervention (ACT1VATE) with usual care in improving HbA1c, DD, quality of life, and cost-effectiveness in adults with T1D.

Mortality after emergency department discharge: an analysis of 453599 cases.

Objectives: To quantify and analyze mortality in patients who die within 30 days of discharge home from a hospital emergency department (ED).

Material And Methods: All patients older than 14 years of age who were discharged home from the ED of a tertiary care hospital over a 5-year period were included. We collected age, sex, and other demographic variables, as well as the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI).

EMBARK: A Randomized, Controlled Trial Comparing Three Approaches to Reducing Diabetes Distress and Improving HbA1c in Adults With Type 1 Diabetes.

Objective: To compare the effectiveness of three interventions to reduce diabetes distress (DD) and improve HbA1c among adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Research Design And Methods: Individuals with T1D (n = 276) with elevated DD (a score >2 on the total Type 1 Diabetes Distress Scale) and HbA1c (>7.5%) were recruited from multiple settings and randomly assigned to one of three virtual group-based programs: 1) Streamline, an educator-led education and diabetes self-management program; 2) TunedIn, a psychologist-led program focused exclusively on emotional-focused DD reduction; or 3) FixIt, an integration of Streamline and TunedIn.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus that led to COVID-19 is associated with significant and long-lasting neurologic symptoms in many patients, with an increased mortality risk for people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and/or Down syndrome (DS). However, few studies have evaluated the neuropathological and inflammatory sequelae in postmortem brain tissue obtained from AD and people with DS with severe SARS-CoV-2 infections. We examined tau, beta-amyloid (Aβ), inflammatory markers and SARS-CoV-2 nucleoprotein in DS, AD, and healthy non-demented controls with COVID-19 and compared with non-infected brain tissue from each disease group (total n = 24).

One of the significant challenges in scaling agile software development is organizing software development teams to ensure effective communication among members while equipping them with the capabilities to deliver business value independently. A formal approach to address this challenge involves modeling it as an optimization problem: given a professional staff, how can they be organized to optimize the number of communication channels, considering both intra-team and inter-team channels? In this article, we propose applying a set of bio-inspired algorithms to solve this problem. We introduce an enhancement that incorporates ensemble learning into the resolution process to achieve nearly optimal results.

Effects of Covid-19-related anxiety on overeating and weight gain in a diverse college sample.

The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has been linked with caloric overeating and weight gain. We employed a mediation analysis to determine whether pandemic-associated overeating was a direct effect of Covid-19-related anxiety (affect regulation theory) or mediated by a coping mechanism of escape eating (escape theory). A diverse pool of college students participated in a repeated cross-sectional study during three separate waves: May 2021 (wave 1,  = 349), December 2021 (wave 2,  = 253), and March 2022 (wave 3,  = 132).

Decoding muscle-resident Schwann cell dynamics during neuromuscular junction remodeling.

Understanding neuromuscular junction (NMJ) repair mechanisms is essential for addressing degenerative neuromuscular conditions. Here, we focus on the role of muscle-resident Schwann cells in NMJ reinnervation. In young mice, a model of progressive NMJ degeneration, we identified a clear NMJ 'regenerative window' that allowed us to define regulators of reinnervation and crossing mice with -tg mice permitted visualization and analysis of Schwann cells.

Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) have a partial or complete trisomy of chromosome 21, resulting in an increased risk for early-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD)-type dementia by early midlife. Despite ongoing clinical trials to treat late-onset AD, individuals with DS are often excluded. Furthermore, timely diagnosis or management is often not available.

Bringing an end to diabetes stigma and discrimination: an international consensus statement on evidence and recommendations.

People with diabetes often encounter stigma (ie, negative social judgments, stereotypes, prejudice), which can adversely affect emotional, mental, and physical health; self-care, access to optimal health care; and social and professional opportunities. To accelerate an end to diabetes stigma and discrimination, an international multidisciplinary expert panel (n=51 members, from 18 countries) conducted rapid reviews and participated in a three-round Delphi survey process. We achieved consensus on 25 statements of evidence and 24 statements of recommendations.
