The nucleotide differences between the strains, and their distribution, suggested that both strains were introduced recently, either as a mixed infection or as two independent introductions. The relationship between these New Zealand strains and other strains and isolates of RgMV, and their potential severity is discussed.

As it becomes apparent that the nonsymbiotic haemoglobins are widespread across the plant kingdom and that they represent a more primitive and evolutionary older form of the plant globin genes, the question of their function becomes more attractive. While the physiological functions of the symbiotic haemoglobins in plants are well understood, almost nothing is known about their nonsymbiotic predecessors.

New, "minimally invasive" internal fixation techniques, however, have been developed in an effort to devascularize the bone less than the traditional method. A detailed knowledge of the local anatomy facilitates the technique and prevents complications. Using Kirschner wires placed at set positions in the distal femur, we analyzed the measurements obtained from the 3D reconstructed helical CT scans of 33 embalmed femora and we report on the anatomy of the distal femur as it relates to supracondylar fracture fixation.

ASGP2, a transmembrane glycoprotein found on the surface of the highly metastatic ascites 13762 rat mammary adenocarcinoma cell line, is constitutively associated with ErbB2 in these cells and in mammary tissue from pregnant rats. Expression studies indicate that ASGP2 interacts directly and specifically with ErbB2 through one of its epidermal growth factor-like domains and that the co-expression of the two proteins in the same cell dramatically facilitates their direct stable interaction.

Nonsymbiotic hemoglobins are broadly present across the plant kingdom; however, the function of these proteins is unknown. Cultured maize cells have been transformed to constitutively express a barley hemoglobin gene in either the sense (HB+) or antisense (HB-) orientation. To elucidate the thermodynamics and determine the role of the hydrophobic effect in the partitioning of small amphiphilic molecules into lipid bilayers, we have used titration calorimetry to directly measure the enthalpy, partition coefficients, and heat capacity change for the partitioning of a series of n-alcohols into lipid bilayers of several lipid compositions. The incremental thermodynamic quantities have been compared with model compound data for partitioning into bulk hydrocarbon solvents.

We show that the H-bonding and/or solvent accessibility properties were modified by the single-site mutation. In this paper, the influence of single amino acid replacements on the global conformation of cytochrome C553 from Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough using isotopic exchange monitored by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry is reported. Based on their respective charge state distributions and isotopic exchanges, we have differentiated relative stability of mutants and a ladder classification with the order being wild-type > Y64F = Y64L > Y64V > Y64A, under specific conditions of pH, is proposed.

Objective: To determine whether there was any benefit from a single house call by a health visitor (a public health nurse) to an elderly person after discharge home from a geriatric hospital.
Methods: A randomized controlled trial with blind assessments at 28 days was conducted. Subjects included residents of Bath, England, with an average age of 83 years, who were discharged consecutively from a geriatric hospital to their homes.
In a flash injury the eyes are protected by the blink reflex. With our patients the eyes were open looking for a means of escape, exposing the globe to injury by hot smoke and protecting the eyelids. It is essential to examine the eyes in any facial burn, especially if there is any history of being injured in an enclosed space.

Protein kinases share a number of highly conserved or invariant amino acid residues in their catalytic domains, suggesting that these residues are necessary for kinase activity. In p180erbB3, a receptor tyrosine kinase belonging to the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor subfamily, three of these residues are altered, suggesting that this protein might have an impaired protein tyrosine kinase activity.
