Bacterial bloodstream infections cause high morbidity and mortality. Although bacteria can be detected by various methods, culture methods are often used for the detection of live, accurate, reproducible, and selective bacterial identification. However, the culture method is time-consuming, and clinicians often start treatment immediately due to the long determination time.

Unlabelled: For the past few years, the synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) and other metal oxide nanoparticles has been carried out using plant tissues, extracts, and other plant parts. The green synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles has many advantages over other processes, and the primary areas of application are drug delivery, food additives, and surface coatings. The use of nanoparticles as an alternative antimicrobial agent in the health and biomedical sectors has increased significantly in recent years.

Article Synopsis
  • Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is linked to serious electrolyte imbalances like hypophosphatemia, especially in hospitalized patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which can be worsened by malnutrition and severity of the disease.
  • In a study of 50 IBD patients, 46% experienced hypophosphatemia during the first week of hospitalization, with significant correlations found between low phosphate levels and both potassium concentrations and disease severity.
  • Factors such as malnutrition, the use of parenteral nutrition, and severe IBD were identified as significant predictors for developing hypophosphatemia in these patients, highlighting the need for careful monitoring and management.

Unlabelled: Many studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of various plant extracts in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. The phytochemical components of plant extracts contain biodegradable agents necessary for the stabilization and synthesis of nanoparticles. However, extracellular components of microorganisms have been shown to have similar activity in recent years.

Objectives: Mouthwashes, a cornerstone of oral and dental hygiene, play a pivotal role in combating the formation of dental plaque, a leading cause of periodontal disease and dental caries. This study aimed to review the composition of mouthwashes found on retail shelves in Turkey and evaluate their prevalence and side effects, if any.

Methods: The mouthwashes examined were sourced from the 5 largest chain stores in each district of Istanbul.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the hemodynamic effects of manual spinal manipulation (MSM) and instrumental spinal manipulation (ISM) on the vertebral artery (VA) and internal carotid artery (ICA) in participants with chronic nonspecific neck pain (NNP).

Methods: Thirty volunteers aged 20 to 40 years old with NNP over 3 months duration were included. Participants were randomly divided into the following 2 groups: (1) MSM group (n = 15) and (2) ISM group (n = 15).

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary cancer of the liver and the third most lethal malignancy worldwide. Patients with unresectable HCC receive systemic therapies, traditionally sorafenib or lenvatinib as first line therapy. Despite its poor therapeutic response and high rates of resistance, in most countries, sorafenib still remains the globally used first-line treatment for advanced HCC.

Background: Aortoenteric fistula (AEF) is a rare medical emergency, but one of the most difficult and threatening complications of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding.

Methods: A retrospective observational study was performed on patients hospitalised with GI bleeding and a definitive AEF diagnosis. We collected operative reports and medical records of patients operated on with an AEF diagnosis.

A novel Gram-stain positive, aerobic, non-motile actinobacterium, designated strain K220, was isolated from soil collected from Cape Andreas (Zafer Burnu), Northern Cyprus, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The organism was shown to have phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic, cultural and morphological properties consistent with its classification in the genus Saccharopolyspora. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain K220 showed that it is closely related to the type strains of Saccharopolyspora maritima 3SS5-12, Saccharopolyspora kobensis JCM 9109 and Saccharopolyspora hirsuta ATCC 27875 with 97.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) presenting with tumor thrombus (TT) and inferior vena cava (IVC)/right atrium (RA) infringement point to an advanced-stage disease that is deemed inoperable. Stereotactic body radiotherapy is an emerging treatment option for this group of patients with promising outcomes in recent studies that are comparable to conventional treatment methods, namely, transarterial chemoembolization and transarterial radioembolization. Here, we report a case of HCC with RA extension through the IVC.

Background: In open-heart surgeries, many organ functions, particularly the respiratory system, are affected by post-operative pain, and so is mortality. Following open-heart surgery, geriatric patients have a higher risk of organ dysfunction and mortality. We aimed to compare the short-term outcomes and mortality of thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) and intravenous (IV) analgesia in geri-atric patients undergoing open heart surgery.

Exploration of unexplored habitats for novel actinobacteria with high bioactivity potential holds great promise in the search for novel entities. During the course of isolation of actinobacteria from desert soils, four actinobacteria, designated as 5K548, 7K502, 16K309 and 16K404, were isolated from the Karakum Desert and their bioactivity potential as well as taxonomic provenances were revealed by comprehensive genome analyses. Pairwise sequence analyses of the 16S rRNA genes indicated that the four strains are representatives of putatively novel taxa within the prolific actinobacterial genus Saccharopolyspora.
