Maize (Zea mays) and soybean (Glycine max) were used as model food-chain plants to explore vegetative uptake of differently charged multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Neural electrodes are an important part of brain-machine interface devices that can restore functionality to patients with sensory and movement disorders. Chronically implanted neural electrodes induce an unfavorable tissue response which includes inflammation, scar formation, and neuronal cell death, eventually causing loss of electrode function. We developed a poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogel coating for neural electrodes with non-fouling characteristics, incorporated an anti-inflammatory agent, and engineered a stimulus-responsive degradable portion for on-demand release of the anti-inflammatory agent in response to inflammatory stimuli.

The performance of neural electrodes implanted in the brain is often limited by host response in the surrounding brain tissue, including astrocytic scar formation, neuronal cell death, and inflammation around the implant. We applied conformal microgel coatings to silicon neural electrodes and examined host responses to microgel-coated and uncoated electrodes following implantation in the rat brain. In vitro analyses demonstrated significantly reduced astrocyte and microglia adhesion to microgel-coated electrodes compared to uncoated controls.

Rho GTPases play a fundamental role in numerous cellular processes that are initiated by extracellular stimuli including agonists that work through G protein-coupled receptors. A direct pathway for such regulation was elucidated by the identification of p115 RhoGEF, an exchange factor for RhoA that is activated through its RGS domain by G alpha(13). Endogenous p115 RhoGEF was found mainly in the cytosol of serum-starved cells but partially localized to membranes in cells stimulated with lysophosphatidic acid.

The activity of phospholipase D (PLD) is regulated by a variety of hormonal stimuli and provides a mechanistic pathway for response of cells to extracellular stimuli. The two identified mammalian PLD enzymes possess highly homologous C termini, which are required for catalytic activity. Mutational analysis of PLD1 and PLD2 reveals that modification of as little as the C-terminal threonine or the addition of a single alanine attenuates activity of the enzyme.

Immigration has been the principal source of population growth in Australia since European settlement began in 1788. As a result, the Australian gene pool has been constantly evolving, particularly over the last 50 years, during which peoples from many European and Asian countries have arrived in large numbers. Three highly polymorphic DNA loci (D1S80, HLA-DQA1, and human THO1) are used to assess the level of diversity among six immigrant subpopulations that compose significant elements in present-day Australia, namely, Asians, Italians, Greeks, Slavs, Middle Easterners, and a "general white" sample.
