Background: Population studies have shown that black race is a natriuretic peptide (NP) deficiency state. We sought to assess whether the effects of age, sex, body mass index (BMI) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) on N-terminal-pro-B-type NP (NT-proBNP) levels differ in white and black individuals.
Methods: The study population consisted of a stratified random cohort from the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study.
Background: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) durability, time to modification or cessation, has declined. The study objective was to determine whether kidney dysfunction is contributing to reduced durability.
Methods: This retrospective follow-up study of CNICS evaluated treatment-naive PLWH initiating ART between 2007 and 2014.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and kidney disease are among the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. However, knowledge of genetic determinants of those diseases in African Americans remains limited.
Results: In our study, associations between 4956 GWAS catalog reported SNPs and 67 traits were examined among 7726 African Americans from the REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study, which is focused on identifying factors that increase stroke risk.
The catalytic sites of acidic zeolite are profoundly altered by the presence of water changing the nature of the Brønsted acid site. High-resolution solid-state NMR spectroscopy shows water interacting with zeolite Brønsted acid sites, converting them to hydrated hydronium ions over a wide range of temperature and thermodynamic activity of water. A signal at 9 ppm was observed at loadings of 2-9 water molecules per Brønsted acid site and is assigned to hydrated hydronium ions on the basis of the evolution of the signal with increasing water content, chemical shift calculations, and the direct comparison with HClO in water.

Background: Low baseline plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) is associated with increased risk of acute respiratory infections, but its association with long-term risk of sepsis remains unclear.
Methods: We performed a case-cohort analysis of participants selected from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study, a US cohort of 30239 adults aged ≥45 years. We measured baseline plasma 25(OH)D in 711 sepsis cases and in 992 participants randomly selected from the REGARDS cohort.
Hydrogenation on Mo and W sulfides occurs at the edges of the sulfide slabs. The rate of hydrogen addition is directly proportional to the concentration of sulfhydryl (SH) groups at the slab edge and the metal atom attached to it. Sulfhydryl groups vicinal to edge-incorporated Ni hydrogenate with much higher rates than SH close to Mo and W.
