Site-selective -arylations of glycoside-derived diols have been achieved by couplings with bromoarenes upon irradiation with blue LEDs in the presence of an iridium photocatalyst and a nickel complex. The use of hexamethylenetetramine (hexamine) in place of quinuclidine, along with the application of a methoxy-substituted 2,2'-bipyridine ligand, provided improvements in yield for this relatively challenging substrate class. Selective arylation took place at the less sterically hindered OH group, as determined by the substitution pattern and configuration of the glycoside substrate.

Article Synopsis
  • Mycobacterium abscessus complex (MABC) is an opportunistic bacteria that can cause severe pulmonary infections, leading to a study investigating its transmission in healthcare settings in Montréal.
  • The research analyzed 221 bacterial isolates from 115 individuals between 2010-2018 for genetic similarities, revealing 28 sequence types and 210 pairs of isolates within a close genetic range, although no definitive person-to-person transmission was identified.
  • The study concluded that while genomic analysis is helpful, it’s not enough to confirm MABC transmission in healthcare, suggesting that infections likely aren't spread directly between patients in these environments.

There is some evidence that the river migration success of Atlantic salmon smolts, on their first migration to sea, varies both spatially and temporally. However, we have only a poor understanding of what may be driving this variation. In this study, we used acoustic telemetry to quantify the spatial and temporal variations in river migration success in Atlantic salmon smolts on their first migration to sea.

Purpose Of Review: Because nutrition plays a crucial role in the development of chronic diseases, ensuring nutrition security is important for promoting population health. Nutrition security is defined as having consistent and equitable access to healthy, safe, affordable foods essential to optimal health and well-being. Distinguished from food security, nutrition security consists of two constructs: healthy diets and nutritional status.

As public health laboratories expand their genomic sequencing and bioinformatics capacity for the surveillance of different pathogens, labs must carry out robust validation, training, and optimization of wet- and dry-lab procedures. Achieving these goals for algorithms, pipelines and instruments often requires that lower quality datasets be made available for analysis and comparison alongside those of higher quality. This range of data quality in reference sets can complicate the sharing of sub-optimal datasets that are vital for the community and for the reproducibility of assays.

Several studies have shown an inverse correlation between the likelihood of developing a neurodegenerative disorder and cancer. We previously reported that the levels of amyloid beta (Aβ), at the center of Alzheimer's disease pathophysiology, are regulated by acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Here, we examined the effect of Aβ or its fragments on the levels of ACh in A549 (p53 wild-type) and H1299 (p53-null) NSCLC cell media.

Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory condition that usually presents with erythema, scaly greasy papules, and plaques affecting sebaceous gland-rich areas and predominantly involving the face and scalp. The diagnosis of seborrheic dermatitis can often be rendered based on the clinical presentation. However, in certain cases, a biopsy can be useful to distinguish it from clinical mimics such as psoriasis, discoid lupus, and rosacea.

Previously, we found that the levels of soluble amyloid precursor protein α (sAPPα) are regulated, in part, by acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in human A549 (p53 wild-type) and H1299 (p53-null) NSCLC cell lines. In this study, we found regulation of sAPPα levels in the media by leptin, a widely recognized obesity-associated adipokine that has recently been shown to play a possible role in cancer signaling. Increased levels of sAPPα, that were accompanied by lower Aβ40/42 levels in the media of A549 and H1299 cells, were detected upon cell incubation with leptin.

Fast, efficient public health actions require well-organized and coordinated systems that can supply timely and accurate knowledge. Public databases of pathogen genomic data, such as the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC), have become essential tools for efficient public health decisions. However, these international resources began primarily for academic purposes, rather than for surveillance or interventions.

In addition to binding to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), nicotine is known to regulate the β-adrenergic receptors (β-ARs) promoting oncogenic signaling. Using A549 (p53 wild-type) and H1299 (p53-null) lung cancer cells, we show that nicotine treatment led to: increased adrenaline/noradrenaline levels, an effect blocked by treatment with the α7nAChR inhibitor (α-BTX) but not by the β-blocker (propranolol) or the α4β2nAChR antagonist (DhβE); decreased GABA levels in A549 and H1299 cell media, an effect blocked by treatment with DhβE; increased VEGF levels and PI3K/AKT activities, an effect diminished by cell co-treatment with α-BTX, propranolol, and/or DhβE; and inhibited p53 activity in A549 cells, that was reversed, upon cell co-treatment with α-BTX, propranolol, and/or DhβE or by VEGF immunodepletion. VEGF levels increased upon cell treatment with nicotine, adrenaline/noradrenaline, and decreased with GABA treatment.

The Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) is a widely used resource that comprehensively organizes and defines the phenotypic features of human disease, enabling computational inference and supporting genomic and phenotypic analyses through semantic similarity and machine learning algorithms. The HPO has widespread applications in clinical diagnostics and translational research, including genomic diagnostics, gene-disease discovery, and cohort analytics. In recent years, groups around the world have developed translations of the HPO from English to other languages, and the HPO browser has been internationalized, allowing users to view HPO term labels and in many cases synonyms and definitions in ten languages in addition to English.

The ectodomain of the transmembrane protein E-cadherin can be cleaved and released in a soluble form referred to as soluble E-cadherin, or sE-cad, accounting for decreased E-cadherin levels at the cell surface. Among the proteases implicated in this cleavage are matrix metalloproteases (MMP), including MMP9. Opposite functions have been reported for full-length E-cadherin and sE-cad.

Telemedicine use expanded rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic, giving patients access to quality care while reducing the spread of infection. Although beneficial changes were made to reimbursement and privacy guidelines to increase the ease of telemedicine for clinicians, the lack of digital devices, Internet, digital knowledge, and trust in this method of delivery are potential barriers to telemedicine for healthcare visits, and may have widened the care gap for underserved patients. To ensure that patients of all socioeconomic levels have access to telemedicine requires education, expanding broadband Internet access across the United States, and offering free or reduced Internet services to patients in need.

Although research on rare autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases has enabled definition of nonredundant regulators of homeostasis in human immunity, because of the single gene-single disease nature of many of these diseases, contributing factors were mostly unveiled in sequential and noncoordinated individual studies. We used a network-based approach for integrating a set of 186 inborn errors of immunity with predominant autoimmunity/autoinflammation into a comprehensive map of human immune dysregulation, which we termed "AutoCore." The AutoCore is located centrally within the interactome of all protein-protein interactions, connecting and pinpointing multidisease markers for a range of common, polygenic autoimmune/autoinflammatory diseases.

Cisplatin is a platinum agent used in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Much remains unknown regarding the basic operative mechanisms underlying cisplatin resistance in NSCLC. In this study, we found that phosphorylation of IGFBP-3 by CK2 (P-IGFBP-3) decreased its binding to hyaluronan (HA) but not to IGF-1 and rendered the protein less effective at reducing cell viability or increasing apoptosis than the non-phosphorylated protein with or without cisplatin in the human NSCLC cell lines, A549 and H1299.
