Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a chronic, occlusive cerebrovasculopathy typified by progressive steno-occlusive disease of the intracranial internal carotid arteries (ICAs) and their proximal branches. Moyamoya syndrome (MMS) categorizes patients with characteristic MMD plus associated conditions. As such, the most usual presentations are those that occur with cerebral ischemia, specifically transient ischemic attack, acute ischemic stroke, and seizures.

EnduroBone: A 3D printed bioreactor for extended bone tissue culture.

Studies of the effects of external stimuli on bone tissue, disease transmission mechanisms, and potential medication discoveries benefit from long-term tissue viability ex vivo. By simulating the in-vivo environment, bioreactors are essential for studying bone cellular activity throughout biological processes. We present the development of an automated 3D-printed bioreactor EnduroBone designed to sustain the ex-vivo viability of 10 mm diameter cancellous bone cores for an extended period.

Introduction: Prompt detection of traumatic cervical spine injury is important as delayed or missed diagnosis can have disastrous consequences. Given the understood mechanism of non-accidental trauma (NAT), it is reasonable to suspect that cervical spine injury can occur. Current management of young children being evaluated for NAT includes placement of a rigid collar until clinical clearance or an MRI can be obtained.

Providing Patients with Locally Advanced Cervical Cancer Access to Brachytherapy: Experience from a Referral Network for Women Treated in Overseas France.

Image-guided adaptive brachytherapy (IGABT) is part of the standard of care for locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC). Access to IGABT is limited in many regions, thus leading to treatment care disparities. We report the experience of a referral network for women with LACC between radiotherapy facilities in Overseas France and Gustave Roussy.

Purpose: To report our experience of intercontinental multidisciplinary oncology videoconferencing between the French mainland and South Pacific to discuss rare and/or complex cancer cases.

Methods: On the first and third Friday of each month, all participants connected between 6:30 am and 8:00 am GMT to discuss using a web conference service.

Results: Between November 2019 and April 2020, 99 cases concerning 78 patients were discussed.

Equine atypical myopathy (AM) is seasonal intoxication resulting from the ingestion of seeds and seedlings of the sycamore maple () that contain toxins, among them, hypoglycin A (HGA). Literature mentions several cases of AM among gravid mares and in unweaned foals. The objective of this study was to determine whether HGA and/or its metabolite are present in milk from grazing mares exposed to sycamore maple trees as confirmed by detection of HGA and its metabolite in their blood.

In 2014, atypical myopathy (AM) was linked to (sycamore maple) in Europe. The emergence of this seasonal intoxication caused by a native tree has raised many questions. This manuscript aims at answering the five most frequently asked questions (FAQs) regarding (1) identification of toxic trees; reduction of risk at the level of (2) pastures and (3) equids; (4) the risk associated with pastures with sycamores that have always been used without horses being poisoned and (5) the length of the risk periods.

Equine atypical myopathy in Europe results from hypoglycin A (HGA) exposure through the ingestion of samaras or seedlings of the sycamore maple tree. This pilot study aimed at better defining sources of HGA intoxication in spring. Samaras fallen on the ground and then seedlings were collected at two-week intervals from sycamore, Norway, and field maple trees over the spring 2016.

Vertebral body fractures are well-known sources of axial back pain with the potential to cause neurological deficits. Duplication of a component of the vertebral column is a rare phenomenon; however, vertebral pedicle duplication is an unreported phenomenon, and has not been reported in association with a vertebral burst fracture and kyphotic deformity. We present a unique case of vertebral pedicle duplication in association with a T11 vertebral burst fracture in a 72-year-old female.

The use of antibiotics in cattle in North-East Benin: pharmaceutical inventory and risk practices of cattle breeders.

This study's aim is to inventory antibiotics used in cattle in North-East Benin and assess risk practices that could be the cause of both food chain contamination by antibiotic residues and selection of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in animals and humans. A survey was conducted among 98 cattle breeders in the districts of Banikoara, Kandi, Bembereke, and Kalale in North Benin. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, covering breeder status, breeding system, and antibiotic use.

Protective effects of tiotropium alone or combined with budesonide against cadmium inhalation induced acute neutrophilic pulmonary inflammation in rats.

As a potent bronchodilator, the anti-inflammatory effects of tiotropium and its interaction with budesonide against cadmium-induced acute pulmonary inflammation were investigated. Compared to values obtained in rats exposed to cadmium, cytological analysis indicated a significant decrease of total cell and neutrophil counts and protein concentration in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in rats pretreated with tiotropium (70μg/15ml or 350μg/15ml). Zymographic tests showed a decrease of MMP-2 activity in BALF in rats pretreated only with high concentration of tiotropium.

Pectus excavatum repair after sternotomy: the Chest Wall International Group experience with substernal Nuss bars.

Objectives: Patients with pectus excavatum (PE) after prior sternotomy for cardiac surgery present unique challenges for repair of PE. Open repairs have been recommended because of concerns about sternal adhesions and cardiac injury. We report a multi-institutional experience with repair utilizing substernal Nuss bars in this patient population.

Retrospective analysis of patients treated at the Integrated Center of Oncology by total nodal irradiation (TNI) was performed to evaluate its therapy potency. TNI delivers a dose of 1 Gy in a single session.

Residues in Beeswax: A Health Risk for the Consumer of Honey and Beeswax?

A scenario analysis in regard to the risk of chronic exposure of consumers to residues through the consumption of contaminated honey and beeswax was conducted. Twenty-two plant protection products and veterinary substances of which residues have already been detected in beeswax in Europe were selected. The potential chronic exposure was assessed by applying a worst-case scenario based on the addition of a "maximum" daily intake through the consumption of honey and beeswax to the theoretical maximum daily intake through other foodstuffs.

Exclusive concurrent radiochemotherapy for advanced head and neck cancers with 'fractionated' 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin.

Concurrent radiochemotherapy (CRC) is a standard treatment in patients with inoperable locoregionally advanced ear-nose-throat (ENT) cancer. We report the safety and efficacy of CRC with daily fractionated 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin ('F' 5FU-CDDP) in a monocentric retrospective cohort. From January 2006 to August 2012, all patients with unresectable (or inoperable) nonmetastatic locoregionally advanced ENT cancer treated curatively by means of radiotherapy (normal fractionated 70 Gy to the macroscopic tumor and prophylactic 50 Gy) with three courses (week 1-week 4-week 7) of 'F' 5FU-CDDP regimen (800 mg/m/day of 5-fluorouracil and 20 mg/m/day of CDDP from day 1 to day 4) were included.

Assessment of a computed tomography guided injection technique of the lumbo-sacral disc in sheep.

Objectives: Recent data indicate that degeneration of intervertebral discs occurs naturally in sheep, with a higher prevalence at the level of the lumbo-sacral disc. The objective of this ex vivo study was to evaluate a computed tomography (CT) guided method of injection into the ovine lumbo-sacral disc.

Methods: Six euthanatized sheep were used for identification of the approach plane, the optimal direction of the needle and the mean distance from skin to disc.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the prognostic value of different parameters on pretreatment fluorodeoxyglucose [((18)F)-FDG] positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) in patients with localized oesophageal cancer.

Patients And Method: We retrospectively reviewed 83 cases of localised oesophageal cancer treated in our institution. Patients were treated with curative intent and have received chemoradiotherapy alone or followed by surgery.

Reasons For Performing Study: Ingestion of sycamore seeds (Acer pseudoplatanus) is the likely source of hypoglycin A in atypical myopathy (AM) but ingestion of seedlings in spring might also contribute to intoxication.

Objectives: To test for hypoglycin A in seeds and seedlings collected on pastures where AM cases were reported and compare its concentration in serum of affected and healthy horses.

Study Design: Field investigation of clinical cases.
