Article Synopsis
  • Apigenin, a flavonoid thought to benefit cardiovascular health, was studied for its effects on vascular function in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHRs) to understand its mechanisms of action.
  • Vascular beds from SHRs were tested with varying doses of apigenin, showing that its ability to lower blood pressure depended on the presence of endothelial cells and was significantly reduced by inhibitors of nitric oxide and potassium channels.
  • The research concluded that apigenin causes vasodilation primarily through endothelial nitric oxide and calcium-activated potassium channels, suggesting its potential for therapeutic use in cardiovascular diseases and the need for more clinical studies.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The leaves, bark, and roots of Gallesia integrifolia are consumed in folk medicine through infusion, decoction, and topical preparation by crushing because of its pharmacological properties in several peripheral system disorders, including microbial infections. The presence of various molecules in different parts of the plant likely confers this species' fungicidal action, but scientific evidence is lacking. Vulvovaginal candidiasis mainly affects women of reproductive age.

The aim of this study was to verify the bacterial resistance profile and detect the presence of mecA gene in Staphylococcus spp. isolated from the nasal microbiota of domiciled dogs. For this purpose 100 nasal swabs from 100 domiciled dogs were collected from the central area of the city of Umuarama (PR), along with a questionnaire answered by their owners.

Article Synopsis
  • The Brazilian tree Baill., known as "sangra-d'água," is traditionally believed to have health benefits, including pain relief and heart protection, though its cardiac effects haven't been scientifically studied until now.
  • A research study tested the effects of an ethanol-soluble leaf extract from Baill. on Wistar rats, exposed to smoking and high cholesterol, by monitoring heart and kidney health metrics.
  • Results showed that the extract lowered cholesterol and triglycerides while offering protective antioxidant effects, without affecting blood pressure or heart rhythms, suggesting its potential as a natural remedy for cardiovascular issues.

There is a trend toward the use of natural substances present in plants and vegetables. In general, foods rich in antioxidants are complex matrices; therefore, understanding its absorption effects is extremely relevant to know its bioactive potential. Thus, this systematic review focused on clinical trials involving plants (or compounds) registered on the National List of Medicinal Plants of Interest to the Unified Health System (RENISUS) with antioxidant properties.

Cardiovascular diseases are associated with high morbidity and mortality worldwide and have several risk factors, including dyslipidemia, smoking, and hypertension. Studies have evaluated isolated risk factors in experimental models of cardiovascular disease, but few preclinical studies have assessed associations between multiple risk factors. In the present study, hypertensive Wistar rats (Goldblatt 2K1C model) received a 0.

Background: Chronic respiratory diseases (CRD) are a major public health problem worldwide. In the current epidemiological context, CRD have received much interest when considering their correlation with greater susceptibility to SARS-Cov-2 and severe disease (COVID-19). Increasingly more studies have investigated pathophysiological interactions between CRD and COVID-19.

Malaria is a global public health problem that causes approximately 445 000 deaths annually worldwide, especially in underdeveloped countries. Because of the high prevalence and mortality of the disease, new and less toxic therapeutic agents need to be developed, such as MEFAS, a low-cost hybrid salt that consists of artesunate and mefloquine. However, the efficacy of MEFAS has been systematically demonstrated, its safety requires further investigation.

Introduction: Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension is defined as a group of diseases characterized by a progressive increase in pulmonary vascular resistance that results in right heart failure and premature death. Although therapies exist to improve hemodynamic instability and symptoms, there is no cure for pulmonary arterial hypertension and it remains a life-threatening condition. A recent study performed in China reported, for the first time, the effect of pulmonary arterial denervation on functional capacity and hemodynamics in patients with refractory idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension.
