Organisms have been shifting their timing of life history events (phenology) in response to changes in the emergence of resources induced by climate change. Yet understanding these patterns at large scales and across long time series is often challenging. Here we used the US weather surveillance radar network to collect data on the timing of communal swallow and martin roosts and evaluate the scale of phenological shifts and its potential association with temperature.

New adjuvant formulations are required for the high vaccine demands, especially adjuvant formulations that induce a Th1 phenotype. Herein we assess a vaccination strategy using a combination of Alum and polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid [Poly(I:C)] adjuvants plus the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in a prefusion trimeric conformation by an intradermal (ID) route.

Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and TEM identified maghemite as the main iron phase of the SPION nanoparticles with an average size 13 nm. Batch adsorption experiments at 800 mg/L showed a 63% increase of adsorption capacity when loading 2.

Recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of screening using low dose CT (LDCT) in reducing lung cancer related mortality. While lung nodules are detected with a high rate of sensitivity, this exam has a low specificity rate and it is still difficult to separate benign and malignant lesions.

Lung cancer is the deadliest cancer worldwide. It has been shown that early detection using low-dose computer tomography (LDCT) scans can reduce deaths caused by this disease. We present a general framework for the detection of lung cancer in chest LDCT images.

Despite some vineyards were abandoned 40 years ago, noticeable amounts of Cu and other man-related metals are still nowadays detected in soils. In the present work, the development of a mobility test for the available heavy metal (Cu, Pb, Zn and As) content in soil has been performed using portable X-ray fluorescence (FP-XRF) combined with single leaching test, and was applied to a calcareous soil of a former vineyard area in Catalonia (NE Spain).

Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment alternative to achieve a significant and sustained weight reduction in patients with morbid obesity. The results of controlled clinical trials indicate that, compared to medical treatment, surgery for obese patients with DM2 allows a better control of blood glucose and cardiovascular risk factors, reduces the need for medications and increases the likelihood for remission.

Nevertheless, SG failure and complications are increasingly being observed as the number of procedures increases.
Objectives: To report our results in converting SG to revisional laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (R-LRYGB).

Background And Aims: Initial reports suggest that fully covered self-expandable metal stents (FCSEMSs) may be better suited for drainage of dense pancreatic fluid collections (PFCs), such as walled-off pancreatic necrosis. The primary aim was to analyze the effectiveness and safety of FCSEMSs for drainage of different types of PFCs in a large cohort. The secondary aim was to investigate which type of FCSEMS is superior.

We hypothesized that adenosine dysregulation contributes to fibrosis in diabetic kidney disease. Our findings indicate that high glucose levels and experimental diabetes decreased uptake activity through the equilibrative nucleoside transporter 1 (ENT1) in proximal tubule cells.

Our aim is to assess the frequency of IH after a RYGB in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of our bariatric surgery unit's database between 2001 and 2013 is obtained.
Introduction: Portal and mesenteric vein thrombosis are relatively uncommon surgical complications, with difficult diagnosis and potentially severe consequences due to higher risk of bowel infarction. The purpose of this study was to present a series of patients who developed postoperative portal vein thrombosis after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy between June 2005 and June 2011 who developed portal vein thrombosis.
Background: Bariatric surgery is the gold-standard treatment for morbid obesity because it has low morbidity rates in high-volume centers and generates long term sustained weight loss.
Aim: To describe our experience in bariatric surgery since the creation of our bariatric program in 1992.
Material And Methods: Retrospective analysis of all patients subjected to bariatric surgery from 1992 to December 2010.
Background: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is an emerging surgical technique with encouraging results. The objective of this study is to report surgical results after 1,000 consecutive LSG cases as a stand-alone procedure for morbid obesity during a 3-year follow-up.
Methods: Data were obtained by review of our prospectively maintained database, patients' clinical charts, and phone interview of all patients who underwent LSG in our institution from December 2005 to February 2010.
Background: Adolescent obesity has become an important health problem. Bariatric surgery in this population continues to be a matter of debate. The aim of our study was to present our experience and results with laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in obese adolescents at the digestive surgery department of the Hospital Clínico Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has become a popular surgical procedure among bariatric surgeons. Few studies have compared the efficacy of the procedure to laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB). We performed a case-control study to assess the surgical results, weight progression, and remission of co-morbid conditions.

We explored the potential role of 11β-HSD1 overexpression in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) assessing sequential changes of enzyme expression, in hepatic and adipose tissue, and the occurrence of portal hypercortisolism in obese mice. 11β-HSD1 expression was also assessed in tissues from obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

However, laparoscopic gastrectomy for advanced tumor remains controversial, particularly in terms of oncologic outcomes. This study was designed to compare 3-year survival of laparoscopic versus open curative gastrectomy in early and advanced gastric cancer.

The single base pair guanine insertion/deletion polymorphism (4G/5G) within the promoter region of the PAI-1 gene influences PAI-1 synthesis and may modulate hepatic fibrogenesis.
Aim: To evaluate the influence of PAI-1 serum levels and 4G/5G polymorphism on the risk of liver fibrosis associated to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in morbidly obese patients.
The efficacy of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) to control type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been demonstrated in morbidly obese patients. Surgical procedures primarily focused on T2DM control in patients with body mass index (BMI) < 35 kg/m(2) have shown to effectively induce remission of T2DM. However, only few reports have evaluated the safety and efficacy of RYGB in this group of patients.

The influence of the conditions of infection on the yield of occlusion bodies (OBs) of the Anticarsia gemmatalis multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AgMNPV), produced in serum-free suspension cultures of saUFL-AG-286 cells, was investigated by two 2(2) full factorial experiments with centre point. Each experiment tested the effects of the initial cell density and the multiplicity of infection at two levels, in the four possible combinations of levels and conditions, plus a further combination with each condition set at the middle of its extreme levels. The yield of occlusion bodies proved to be sensitive to the modification of infection conditions.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the 11beta-HSD1 expression in liver, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) in morbidly obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery and its correlations with clinical, anthropometric, and biochemical variables.
Methods: A prospective study was conducted over a 27-month period.
