Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome is a common condition in the emergency department. A case is presented of a 76-year-old patient with acute chest pain and broad complex tachycardia. Despite the fact that previous and post cardioversion ECG tracings in sinus rhythm showed no signs of pre-excitation, the characteristic pattern of pre-excited atrial fibrillation (AF) is recognized and after successful DC cardioversion the patient is referred for catheter ablation of the accessory pathway.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the relationship between specific genetic variations in serotonin receptor and transporter genes and the risk of myocardial infarction (MI).
  • The T102C polymorphism in the 5-HT(2A) receptor gene showed no significant association with MI, nor did it affect the age of onset for the first MI episode.
  • However, the deletion polymorphism in the 5-HT transporter gene (ss genotype) was found more frequently in late-onset MI patients, suggesting it may have a protective effect that delays the onset of MI, especially in smokers.
