Floodplains function as global hotspots for the natural production of methane. Some of this methane can be oxidized by methanotrophic bacteria and assimilated into their biomass before reaching the atmosphere. Consequently, aquatic invertebrates that feed on methanotrophic bacteria may transfer methane-derived carbon to higher trophic levels in the aquatic food chain.

In this Letter we show that pseudoscalar meson leptonic decay data can be used to set stringent limits on the mass m_{W_{R}} of a right-handed vector boson, such as the one that appears in left-right symmetric models. We have shown that for a heavy neutrino with a mass m_{N} in the range 50 View Article and Find Full Text PDF

With the growing necessity of achieving carbon neutrality in the industrial sector, the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide into methanol has been widely considered one of the key strategies for the utilization of captured CO. For this reason, the development of alternative catalysts such as ZnZrO has attracted considerable interest, given its superior stability and versatility in comparison to the conventional Cu-based materials. In this work, ZnZrO has been produced by a hydrothermal synthesis method at varied synthesis pH between 7 and 10 and a positive association between pH and catalytic CO conversion is observed.

DNA viruses that produce persistent infections have been proposed as potential causes for the extinction of Neanderthals, and, therefore, the identification of viral genome remnants in Neanderthal sequence reads is an initial step to address this hypothesis. Here, as proof of concept, we searched for viral remnants in sequence reads of Neanderthal genome data by mapping to adenovirus, herpesvirus and papillomavirus, which are double-stranded DNA viruses that may establish lifelong latency and can produce persistent infections. The reconstructed ancient viral genomes of adenovirus, herpesvirus and papillomavirus revealed conserved segments, with nucleotide identity to extant viral genomes and variable regions in coding regions with substantial divergence to extant close relatives.

Considering the alarming scenario of climate change, CO hydrogenation to methanol is considered a key process for phasing out fossil fuels by means of CO utilization. In this context, MoS catalysts have recently shown to be promising catalysts for this reaction, especially in the presence of abundant basal-plane sulfur vacancies and due to synergistic mechanisms with other phases. In this work, Mn-promoted MoS prepared by a hydrothermal method presents considerable selectivity for CO hydrogenation to methanol in comparison with pure MoS and other promoters such as K and Co.

Sepsis is one of the major complications of surgery resulting in high morbidity and mortality, but there are no specific therapies for sepsis-induced organ dysfunction. Data obtained under Gene Expression Omnibus accession GSE131761 were re-analyzed and showed an increased gene expression of Janus Kinase 2 (JAK2) and Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3) in the whole blood of post-operative septic patients. Based on these results, we hypothesized that JAK/STAT activation may contribute to the pathophysiology of septic shock and, hence, investigated the effects of baricitinib (JAK1/JAK2 inhibitor) on sepsis-induced cardiac dysfunction and multiple-organ failure (MOF).

Article Synopsis
  • Carbon and nitrogen are essential for life and need to be recycled efficiently, but waste streams like sewage sludge are hard to process despite containing these nutrients.
  • Emerging gasification technology can convert biomass into syngas, which can then be transformed into various fuels and used to produce protein-rich yeast biomass.
  • The study evaluates different biogenic feedstocks for their ability to generate methanol and nitrogen, finding that bark and chicken manure provide a suitable balance for cultivating yeast biomass.

Dielectric-barrier-discharge (DBD) plasma jets provide viable state-of-the-art nonthermal processes for a wide range of nanomaterials including particle transport and deposition. We report the interaction of argon and helium plasma jets with the particle aerosol, produced by ns laser ablation of a silver target and subsequently their transport for deposition on a distant substrate. The nanofeatures and functionality of the nanoparticles, entrained and deposited with the two plasma jets were compared using high-resolution electron microscopy, helium ion microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and in terms of the SERS effect.
