It remains under dispute whether status epilepticus (SE) in the perinatal period or early childhood or the underlying neuropathology is the cause of functional impairment later in life. The present study examined whether SE induced by LiCl-pilocarpine in normal immature brain (at the age of 12 or 25 days; P12 or P25) causes cognitive decline and epileptogenesis, and the data were compared to those of rats undergoing SE as adults. Rats in the P12 group had impaired memory (repeated exposure to open-field paradigm) and emotional behaviour (lower proportion of open-arm entries and higher incidence of risk assessment period in elevated plus-maze) when assessed 3 months after SE, although not as severe as in the older age groups.

Objective: To evaluate geometric and dosimetric inaccuracies in the irradiation of the rat brain with the Leksell Gamma Knife.

Materials And Methods: Altogether three types of dosimeters were employed for these measurements: (a) a thermoluminescent dosimeter, (b) a semiconductor detector and (c) a polymer gel dosimeter. The thermoluminescent dosimeter and the semiconductor detector were calibrated using an ion chamber and then implanted in the brain of a rat cadaver and used for absolute dose determination.

Newborn rats were exposed to intermittent hypobaric hypoxia from birth until the age of 19 days. Spatial memory was tested in a Morris water maze from postnatal day (P) 23 to P32 and from P100 to P109. From P24 to P27 and on days P100 and P101, the escape latencies of hypoxic animals were longer than those of controls.

Object: The goals of the study were to determine at what dosage and after what interval impairment of hippocampal function occurs after Leksell gamma knife radiosurgery (GKS) of the rat hippocampus and to assess the associated structural changes.

Methods: Long-Evans rats were irradiated with maximum doses of 25, 50, 75, 100, and 150 Gy, and four 4-mm isocenters were used to cover the hippocampus bilaterally. The impairment of hippocampal function, which is associated with a loss of memory, was measured by testing the impairment of the rats' orientation in a Morris water maze.

Object: The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of a polymer gel-based dosimeter for the evaluation of geometric and dosimetric inaccuracies during gamma knife radiosurgery and during the irradiation of an experimental animal.

Methods: A polymer gel dosimeter, based on acrylic monomers, was used for experiments conducted in this study. The accuracy of the dosimeter was evaluated on a Siemens EXPERT 1-tesla scanner in the transmitter/receiver head coil with the use of a multiecho sequence with 16 echoes, TE 22.
