Intrauterine hypoxia (gestation days 15-19, pO 65 mm Hg, duration 4 h) led to an increase in the expression of p53, beclin-1, endothelial NO synthase (eNOS), and caspase-3 proteins in cardiomyocytes and reduced the number of mast cells in the heart of 60-day-old albino rats. Administration of a non-opiate analogue of leu-enkephalin (NALE peptide: Phe-D-Ala-Gly-Phe-Leu-Arg, 100 μg/kg) on days 2-6 of the neonatal period decreased the severity of delayed posthypoxic myocardial reaction. The content of eNOS cardiomyocytes and the total number of mast cells of these animals did not differ from the control parameters; the content of p53 cardiomyocytes was significantly lower than in animals exposed to intrauterine hypoxia.

Acute exposure of isolated ventricular cardiomyocytes to non-opiate analogue of leu-enkephalin (NALE peptide: Phe-D-Ala-Gly-Phe-Leu-Arg) in a concentration of 100 μg/liter and 6-h incubation in NALE solution did not significantly change ATP-dependent K current, L-type Ca current, p53 protein expression, and number of nucleoli in the cardiomyocyte nuclei. Incubation of cardiomyocytes with NALE (100 μg/liter) in combination with NOP receptor blocker J-113397 (1 mg/liter) was followed by an increase in Ca L-type current and the number of p53 cells. The exposure of cardiomyocytes to NALE in a concentration 1000 μg/liter induced similar changes in the studied parameters (increase in Ca L-type current and number of p53 cardiomyocytes); an increase in the mean number of nucleoli was also observed.

Hypobaric hypoxia (pO 65 mm Hg, duration 4 h) induced a significant increase in the number of cardiomyocytes expressing р53, beclin-1, endothelial NO synthase and accumulation and degranulation of mast cells in the epicardium in hearts of prepubertal female rats (age 45-47 days); the number of cardiomyocytes with nucleoli decreased, while the number of single-nucleolar cardiomyocytes increased after this exposure. Five-fold administration of non-opiate analogue of leu-enkephalin (NALE peptide: Phe-D-Ala-Gly-Phe-Leu-Arg; 100 μg/kg) during the neonatal period reduced the severity of the post-hypoxic changes in the heart. Neonatal administration of NALE (100 μg/kg) against the background of NO synthase blockade with L-NAME (50 mg/kg) did not abolish the cardioprotective effects of the peptide.

Light-activated antimicrobial coatings are currently considered to be a promising approach for the prevention of nosocomial infections. In this work, we present a straightforward strategy for the deposition of a photoactive biocidal organic layer of zinc (tetraamino)phthalocyanine (ZnPcNH) in an electrochemical oxidative process. The chemical structure and morphology of the resulting layer are widely characterized by microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, while its ability to photogenerate reactive oxygen species (ROS) is investigated in situ by UV-Vis spectroscopy with α-terpinene or 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran as a chemical trap.

Peroxidase activity of cytochrome c (cyt c)/cardiolipin (CL) complex is supposed to be involved in the initiation of apoptosis via peroxidative induction of mitochondrial membrane permeabilization. As cyt c binding to CL-containing membranes is at least partially associated with electrostatic protein/lipid interaction, we screened single-point mutants of horse heart cyt c with various substitutions of lysine at position 72, considered to play a significant role in both the binding and peroxidase activity of the protein. Contrary to expectations, K72A, K72R and K72L substitutions exerted slight effects on both the cyt c binding to CL-containing liposomal membranes and the cyt c/HO-induced calcein leakage from liposomes, used here as a membrane permeabilization assay.

The surface properties of novel stationary phases in packed and open tubular columns for capillary electrochromatography (CEC) were examined by measuring the streaming potential in a home made apparatus. The daily topical application of two compounds, a cream containing 10% evening primrose oil (EPO) and Lioxasol (a compound used clinically to treat radiation burns), resulted in increased cell proliferative activity in the skin of female Large White pigs. The effect was most pronounced in the case of the EPO based cream, and was comparable in magnitude with that observed in a previous study on pig skin using orally administered EPO. There was an increase in the size of the rete pegs in the epidermis by 6 weeks after the start of application of the EPO cream.

The aim of the study was to investigate the role of HLA-B27 subtypes in development of ankylosing spondylitis and other seronegative spondylarthropathies. Using oligotyping techniques we studied native DNA of 219 HLA-B27 positive natives: 88 Chukotka residents and 131 Mordovians (Russian Ugro-Finnish population). Only subtypes HLA-B*2705 and B*2702 were revealed.

The data on Marburg virus resistance to freeze-drying in the presence of protective media and on a decrease in the freeze-dried virus biological activity at positive and negative temperatures are presented. Using the results of the experiments, kinetic parameters of virus thermoinactivation were determined for long-term storage at 20 and 37 degrees C. The rate of Marburg virus inactivation was comparable to the rates reported in the literature for para-, mixo- and toga-viruses.

This article presents the results of our work from 1987 to 1994 on the reconstruction of internal exposure of the witnesses to the Chernobyl accident with respect to inhalation of airborne particles of nuclear fuel. Our results eliminate the hypothesis that inhalation intake of radioactive aerosols was a considerable pathway of exposure for staff at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. It would conceivably lead to a nonuniform dose distribution in the body.

The concentrations of gentamicin and cefotaxime (claforan) in the humor of the anterior chamber and vitreous body of the eye were estimated in the study on the pharmacokinetics of the antibiotics in rabbits. The antibiotics were administered intravitreally in single doses. It was shown that the residence time of the antibiotics in the therapeutic concentrations in the eye cavity was 48 hours.

A method for the production of Marburg virus in preparative amounts has been developed. It is based on sedimentation of the virus from blood plasma of infected guinea pigs by ultracentrifugation followed by purification in sucrose density gradient or gel chromatography on macroporous glass sorbents. The optimal terms of blood collection in infected animals were determined.

Experimental endophthalmitis was treated with single intravitreous administrations of cefotaxime (claforan) and gentamicin. It was found that a single administration of cefotaxime to the vitreous body prevented development of endophthalmitis in rabbits previously infected with Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
