The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is calculated and disseminated annually. India, which is the 5 largest economy in the world and has a good ranking in many other indicators, has a poor ranking based on this index. • Low birth weight (LBW) infants are highly susceptible to zinc deficiency, and this study aimed to assess their zinc status compared to normal birth weight (NBW) infants at birth and in early infancy.
  • The study included 339 infants, measuring serum zinc levels through blood samples taken shortly after birth and again between 2 to 10 months of age.
  • Results showed that a significant percentage of both LBW (51.0% at birth, 79.0% at follow-up) and NBW (42.4% at birth, 66.7% at follow-up) infants had zinc deficiency, with the condition worsening over time, especially in infants weighing less than 2,000 grams.
