Furan is produced in foods during processing and preservation techniques that involve heat treatment. Previously, we reported that furan-exposed rats exhibited dose-dependent gross and histological changes in liver which correlated with changes in liver serum enzymes ALT, AST and ALP. Here we report the effects of furan on the male reproductive system.

After 70 days, females were bred and the progeny (F1) were reared on the same fish-based diets as the adults (F0). After 78-133 days on the diets, males and females of both generations were sacrificed and hepatic microsomal enzyme activities determined, along with glutathione S-transferase-placental form (GSTP) expression and hepatic cellular proliferation.

The monocytosis-producing activity (MPA) from Listeria monocytogenes is shown to be associated with the cell envelope. Both MPA and immunosuppressive activity were readily extracted with aqueous solvents and separated as two independent activities by gel filtration and ion-exchange chromatography. As little as 10 microng of the resulting MPA-containing fraction caused a ninefold elevation in the level of circulating monocytes.
