- Alopecia areata (AA) is a difficult autoimmune condition causing non-scarring hair loss, and researchers are comparing the effectiveness of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and topical minoxidil as treatment options.
- A study involving 40 patients over four months evaluated the two treatments, with one group receiving monthly PRP injections and the other using daily minoxidil spray, measuring hair loss severity with the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) scoring system.
- Results showed no significant difference between the treatments after one month, but by the two-month mark, PRP therapy demonstrated a statistically significant greater improvement in SALT scores compared to minoxidil (p-value 0.037).

The increasing popularity of nonsurgical cosmetic treatments with the use of hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxyapatite shows how effective and versatile these treatments can be. However, this is very likely to increase the number of complications that occur. Treatment protocols exist for vascular complications due to injections with hyaluronic acids.
