Nurse practitioners (NPs) are often responsible for coding patient encounters for reimbursement. Students should learn the basics of this skill during their educational preparation. On January 1, 2021, the American Medical Association and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services implemented new guidelines to the evaluation and management office appointment documentation and coding.

Innovative Team Approach for Achieving DNP Program Competencies for Distance Learners During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Doctor of nursing practice (DNP)-prepared nurses must be competent in organizational and systems leadership, advanced clinical skills, and initiation of policy and programmatic changes. Students develop competencies in the DNP advanced practice and nurse administrator specialty tracks through online didactic and in-person practicum experiences within various settings. The COVID-19 pandemic created a barrier to in-person practicum experiences and an urgent need for flexible practicum opportunities.

Interprofessional Team Approach Using Standardized Patient Simulation to Facilitate Person-Centered Quality Healthcare in Home Hospice Care Setting.

Hospice care requires person-centered holistic approaches from interprofessional health care teams. Traditional curricular models include teaching hospice care in discipline-specific didactic settings. There are limited opportunities for prelicensure students to engage in real-life and hands-on hospice care.

Cobalt(II) β-ketoaminato complexes as novel inhibitors of neuroinflammation.

Neuroinflammation contributes to the pathogenesis of neurological disorders including stroke, head trauma, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis as well as age-associated neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Therefore, anti-inflammatory drugs could be used to slow the progression of these diseases. We studied the anti-neuroinflammatory activity of four novel square planar cobalt(II) compounds bearing tetradentate β-ketoaminato ligands with variation in the number of CF(3) ligand substituents, as well as their corresponding unmetallated organic ligands.

Comment on "Retrieval practice produces more learning than elaborative studying with concept mapping".

Karpicke and Blunt (Reports, 11 February 2011, p. 772) reported that retrieval practice produces greater gains in learning than elaborative studying with concept mapping and concluded that this strategy is a powerful way to promote meaningful learning of complex concepts commonly found in science education. We question their findings on methodological and epistemological grounds.

The synthesis and characterization of a series of cobalt(II) β-ketoaminato complexes and their cytotoxic activity towards human tumor cell lines.

A series of square planar cobalt(II) compounds bearing tetradentate β-ketoaminato ligands with variation in the number of -CF(3) ligand substituents has been prepared and structurally and spectroscopically characterized. The fluorinated β-ketoamine ligands were prepared utilizing a multistep reaction sequence employing a silylenol protecting group. An additional tetrahedral cobalt compound bearing two bidentate β-ketoaminato ligands was also prepared and characterized.

Improving population health and reducing health care disparities.

The first goal of Healthy People 2010, to increase quality and years of healthy life, does not necessarily coincide with the second goal, to eliminate disparities among population groups. Improvement in the health of the total population without any reduction in relative disparities among racial and ethnic groups was the most frequent outcome at mid-decade for population-based Healthy People objectives. Strategies to maximize improvement in overall population health may have little or no impact on relative disparities or, indeed, may cause them to increase.

Ideal and perceived satisfaction of patient care providers.

This study compared the ideal job satisfaction and perceived job satisfaction levels of patient care providers from labor and delivery, coronary intensive care, pediatric outpatient, and perioperative areas. Of the 243 surveys distributed, 112 (46%) patient care providers responded. The respondents included registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, patient care assistants, and a scrub technician.

Br-cAMP induction of apoptosis in synchronized CHO cells.

The proliferation of suspension cultures of malignant CHO cells was inhibited by 0.5 mM Br-cAMP treatment and restored by its removal. This treatment also inhibited histone H1 phosphorylation completely, reduced histones H2A and H4 phosphorylations, induced DNA degradation, and produced cells containing micronuclei.

High-performance liquid chromatographic analysis of staurosporine in vivo. Its translocation and pharmacokinetics in rats.

The protein kinase inhibitor staurosporine (Stsp) has been used extensively to study physiological functions, biochemical mechanisms, and cancer therapy. Using an HPLC assay for Stsp developed in our laboratory, we find that only 0.7% of Stsp remains in circulating blood of rats 5 min after injection.

Four distinct cyclin-dependent kinases phosphorylate histone H1 at all of its growth-related phosphorylation sites.

In mammalian cells, up to six serines and threonines in histone H1 are phosphorylated in vivo in a cell cycle dependent manner that has long been linked with chromatin condensation. Growth-associated H1 kinases, now known as cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), are thought to be the enzymes responsible for this process. This paper describes the phosphorylation of histone H1 by four different purified CDKs.

Characterization of a putative helix-loop-helix motif in nucleotide excision repair endonuclease, XPG.

Complementation group G of xeroderma pigmentosum (XPG) is one of the most rare and pathophysiologically heterogeneous forms of this inherited disease. XPG patients exhibit varying phenotypes, from having a very mild defect in DNA repair to being severely affected, and a few cases are also associated with the neurological degeneracy and growth retardation of Cockayne's syndrome. The XPG gene encodes a 134-kDa nuclear protein that is essential for the incision steps of nucleotide excision repair.

Characterization of the mitotic specific phosphorylation site of histone H1. Absence of a consensus sequence for the p34cdc2/cyclin B kinase.

32P-Labeled histone H1 was isolated from synchronized Chinese hamster (line CHO) cells, subjected to tryptic digestion, and fractionated into 15 phosphopeptides by high performance liquid chromatography. These phosphopeptides were grouped into five classes having different cell cycle phosphorylation kinetics: 1) peptides reaching a maximum phosphorylation rate in S and then declining in G2 and M, 2) peptides reaching a maximum phosphorylation rate in G2 and then remaining constant or declining in M, 3) peptides with increasing phosphorylation throughout S and G2 and reaching a maximum in M, 4) one peptide that was phosphorylated only in M, and 5) peptides that had low levels of phosphorylation that remained constant throughout the cell cycle. Amino acid analysis and sequencing demonstrated that the mitotic specific H1 phosphopeptide was the 16-amino acid, N-terminal, tryptic peptide Ac-SETAPAAPAAAPPAEK of the H1-1 class.

Development of a high-performance liquid chromatographic method for the analysis of staurosporine.

Staurosporine (Stsp), a protein kinase inhibitor, has been found to have a differential effect on the proliferation of normal and transformed cells in vitro. Hence, Stsp might be used in cancer therapy to arrest normal proliferating cells in G1, while permitting tumor cells to continue proliferation. The patient could then be treated with a therapeutic agent of maximum toxicity for actively proliferating tumor cells.

Inhibition of mitotic-specific histone phosphorylation by sodium arsenite.

Synchronized cultures of Chinese hamster cells (line CHO) were used to measure the effects of 10 mum sodium arsenite on histone phosphorylation. This treatment caused cell proliferation to be temporarily arrested, after which the cells spontaneously resumed cell proliferation in a radiomimetic manner. Immediately following treatment, it was found that sodium arsenite affected only mitotic-specific H1 and H3 phosphorylations.

Exercise potentiation of lung injury following inhalation of a pneumoedematogenic gas: perfluoroisobutylene.

Exercise performed after exposure to various pneumoedematogenic gases can increase the severity of pulmonary edema beyond that which occurs when exposure is followed by rest. The present study was performed to investigate the potential relationship between a preexisting breach in the lung's permeability status following exposure to an edematogenic gas (perfluoroisobutylene, PFIB) and the potentiating effects of postexposure exercise. Rats were exposed to a concentration of PFIB (100 mg/M3 for 10 min) that results in a unique postexposure latency period (approximately 8 h) prior to the occurrence of overt pulmonary edema.

Lung injury following exposure of rats to relatively high mass concentrations of nitrogen dioxide.

Human inhalation exposures to relatively high mass concentrations of the oxidant gas nitrogen dioxide (NO2) can result in a variety of pulmonary disorders, including life-threatening pulmonary edema, pneumonia, and bronchiolitis obliterans. Inasmuch as most experimental studies to date have examined NO2-induced lung injury following exposures to near ambient or supra-ambient concentrations of NO2, e.g.

Laparoscopic presacral neurectomy vs neurotomy: use of the argon beam coagulator compared to conventional technique.

Presacral neurectomy is effective treatment for dysmenorrhea and midline pelvic pain. Conventional laparoscopic techniques describe retroperitoneal dissection to excise retroperitoneal nerve tissue. The argon beam coagulator (ABC) can be used laparoscopically to hemostatically ablate and thus separate the presacral tissues down to the periosteum without dissecting or excising tissue.

Purification and characterization of O-acetylserine sulfhydrylase isoenzymes from Datura innoxia.

Three isoenzyme forms (designated A, B, and C) of O-acetylserine sulfhydrylase were purified from Datura innoxia suspension cultures. Isoenzyme A is the most abundant form, comprising 45-60% of the total activity. Isoenzymes C and B comprise 35-40% and 10-20% of the activity, respectively.

It is now possible to begin a difficult hysterectomy via laparoscopy with or without adnexal removal and then complete the operation vaginally. We report our successful experience with laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy in 62 of 68 patients. Techniques used for hemostatic separation of the uterus and adnexal pedicles included an automatic laparoscopic stapling device (49 cases), bipolar coagulation with sharp transection (11) and combined techniques (2).

High-performance capillary electrophoresis of proteins from the fluid lining of the lungs of rats exposed to perfluoroisobutylene.

Measurements of the biochemical constituents in the fluid lining of the lung can be used for diagnosing and assessing lung disorders. To facilitate such measurements, a high-performance capillary electrophoresis (HPCE) method has been developed by which the proteins in lung fluid can be analyzed. The lung fluid was obtained by a bronchoalveolar lavage procedure using 48 ml of physiological saline to wash out the lung fluid of rats.

The use of an automatic stapling device for laparoscopic appendectomy.

Laparoscopic appendectomy, for years performed only occasionally, is becoming more common with the increasing interest by both general surgeons and gynecologists in "minimally invasive surgery." A recently available automatic laparoscopic stapling system (the MULTI-FIRE ENDO GIA 30) claims to make laparoscopic appendectomy technically easier to perform. The technique of laparoscopic appendectomy using this automatic stapling device was evaluated in ten patients and compared with our previous laparoscopic techniques.

Laser laparoscopic management of large endometriomas.

Forty-seven patients underwent laser laparoscopic management of endometriomas from 3 to 12 cm in diameter. Eighteen patients had infertility, 15 had pelvic pain, and 14 had both. The types of laser used were the carbon dioxide, argon, and potassium-titanyl-phosphate.
