Background: Liver venous deprivation (LVD) is known to induce better future liver remnant (FLR) hypertrophy than portal vein embolization (PVE). The role of LVD, compared with PVE, in inducing FLR hypertrophy and allowing safe hepatectomy for patients with extensive colorectal liver metastases (CLM) and high-risk factors for inadequate hypertrophy remains unclear.

Methods: Patients undergoing LVD (n = 22) were matched to patients undergoing PVE (n = 279) in a 1:3 ratio based on propensity scores, prior to planned hepatectomy for CLM at a single center (1998-2023).

Numerical simulations of cardiovascular device deployment within digital twins of patient-specific anatomy can expedite and de-risk the device design process. Nonetheless, the exclusive use of patient-specific data constrains the anatomic variability that can be explored. We study how Latent Diffusion Models (LDMs) can edit digital twins to create digital siblings.

The issue of drug resistance and tolerance presents a significant challenge as it diminishes the efficacy and potency of medications, posing a formidable obstacle for physicians striving to enhance pharmacological therapy worldwide. These resistance mechanisms can arise from genetic predispositions or as a consequence of medical interventions. Notably, acquired resistance or tolerance may extend to other drugs within the same or different classes, despite differing mechanisms of action.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the potential of blood lipid profiles as diagnostic markers for oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), a condition that often precedes oral cancer, given the lack of consensus on their utility for this specific disorder.
  • - After reviewing 36 studies, including a meta-analysis of 27 focused on OSMF, significant reductions in various lipid levels (like LDL and HDL) were found in OSMF patients compared to healthy individuals, but not in those with oral squamous cell carcinoma.
  • - Despite these findings, the variability in results indicates that blood lipid profiles cannot yet be considered reliable biomarkers for OSMF, suggesting more research is needed to clarify their role.

VEGFA administration has been explored as a pro-angiogenic therapy for cardiovascular diseases including heart failure for several years, but with little success. Here, we investigate a different approach to augment VEGFA bioavailability: by deleting the VEGFA decoy receptor VEGFR1 (also known as FLT1), one can achieve more physiological VEGFA concentrations. We find that after cryoinjury, zebrafish flt1 mutant hearts display enhanced coronary revascularization and endocardial expansion, increased cardiomyocyte dedifferentiation and proliferation, and decreased scarring.
