Animals use photic cues to time their daily and seasonal activity. The role of photoperiod has been much investigated in seasonal responses, but the role of light intensity is less understood in passerine finches. We investigated if and how daytime light intensity influences photoinduced migratory phenologies and hypothalamic mRNA expressions in a Palearctic-Indian migratory finch, redheaded bunting (Emberiza bruniceps).

Inflammatory cardiac masses are rare and often mimic neoplastic or thrombotic lesions, posing significant diagnostic challenges. These masses are typically identified incidentally during imaging studies, such as echocardiography, and further evaluation with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is required for accurate tissue characterization. Early recognition and appropriate management are crucial to prevent complications.

The umbilical vein can be reliably used for central venous access in neonates less than 14 days old. The catheter used in the umbilical vein normally extends proximally to the inferior vena cava and can be utilized for drug delivery as well as venous sampling. Herein, we describe a neonate with a broken umbilical vein catheter (UVC) stuck in the right atrium and inferior vena cava (IVC), and its successful, uneventful removal via the transfemoral route.

Background: Four out of five people living with osteoarthritis (OA) also suffer with at least one other long-term health condition. The complex interaction between OA and multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs) can result in difficulties with self-care, restricted mobility, pain, anxiety, depression and reduced quality of life. The aim of the MulTI-domain Self-management in Older People wiTh OstEoarthritis and Multi-Morbidities (TIPTOE) trial is to evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of the Living Well self-management support intervention, co-designed with people living with OA, integrated into usual care, in comparison to usual care alone.

The incorporation of renewable energy resources (RERs) into smart city through hybrid microgrid (HMG) offers a sustainable solution for clean energy. The HMG architecture also involves linking the AC-microgrid and DC-microgrid through bidirectional interconnection converters (ICC). This HMG combines AC sources like wind-DFIG with DC sources such as solar PV and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), supported by battery energy storage systems (BESS) and hydrogen storage units (HSU).

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on how light and its intensity affect the migratory behavior and physiology of the redheaded bunting, a type of finch.
  • Researchers divided the birds into groups exposed to different levels of light (5, 25, and 100 lux) while altering their day length to induce various migratory states.
  • Findings indicate that higher light levels increased nighttime activity and food intake in migrating birds, suggesting that daylight illuminance plays a significant role in their seasonal adaptations and feeding behavior.

  • Substance misuse is a major public health issue linked to higher rates of illness, death, and healthcare needs, but the impact of prior emergency medical service (EMS) usage on patient outcomes is unclear.
  • This study analyzed emergency department visits and hospitalizations from 2017 to 2021 to assess how EMS utilization within 30 days before a hospital visit affects in-hospital outcomes, considering multiple factors like age and substance type.
  • Results showed that individuals with substance misuse who used EMS prior to hospitalization had a 52% higher risk of in-hospital mortality, along with a slightly longer hospital stay, but EMS use did not significantly affect ICU admissions or critical illness events.

Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO), or Devic's disease, is an immune-mediated, usually relapsing, central nervous system (CNS) demyelination disorder associated with optic neuritis and transverse myelitis. It is characterised by the presence of longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) and antibodies against water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP4-immunoglobulin G [IgG]). The term NMO spectrum disorder (NMOSD) includes patients with limited forms of NMO who are at risk of recurrence.
