Article Synopsis
  • Most infants are discharged from the hospital before their bilirubin levels peak, making it crucial for parents to monitor jaundice after leaving, although visual assessments are often unreliable.
  • This study evaluated the effectiveness of the jaundice colour card (JCard), a low-cost tool for parents, by comparing their readings to those of paediatricians and actual bilirubin levels in a cohort of 1161 newborns in China.
  • Results showed that the JCard readings from both parents and paediatricians correlated well with bilirubin levels, with decent sensitivity and specificity, although parents' accuracy was slightly lower, especially at high bilirubin levels.
