The basis for increased fracture risk in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is not well understood. In this multi-ethnic, population-based study (n = 565), we investigated bone microstructure, trabecular plate/rod morphology, and mineralization in women with T2DM (n = 175) with and without fracture using a second-generation HRpQCT and individual trabecula segmentation and mineralization (ITS; ITM). Covariate-adjusted aBMD was 3.

High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) has been used for in vivo 3D visualization of trabecular microstructure. Second-generation HR-pQCT (HR-pQCT II) has been shown to have good agreement with first generation HR-pQCT (HR-pQCT I). Advanced Individual Trabecula Segmentation (ITS) decomposes the trabecula network into individual plates and rods.

Background: The main clinical treatment for esophageal cancer is surgery. Since traditional open esophageal cancer resection has the disadvantages of large trauma, long recovery period, and high postoperative complication rate, its clinical application is gradually reduced. The current report of minimally invasive Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy (MIILE) is increasing.

Chemical lumbar sympathectomy (CLS) is a commonly used, minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of conditions including ischemic diseases of the lower extremities, hyperhidrosis, etc. It is commonly practiced to position the puncture needle tip in front of the anterior fascia of the psoas major muscle and inject the inactivating agent around the sympathetic trunk, which is defined as conventional CLS. Although relatively rare, ureteropelvic damage is the most frequently reported complication of conventional CLS and can cause serious harm to patients.

As a major public health concern, colon cancer is one of the most common cancer types, which is also the second cause of cancer death in developed countries and the third most common cancer in other parts of the world. It was reported that patients diagnosed at early stage have a chance to obtain 5-year survival rates at least compared to patients with late stage. Facing the multistep process in intestinal tumorigenesis, there is an urgent need to develop more effective early detection strategies for ameliorating the patient clinical outcome.

Background: Balanced adjustment of the portal vein shunt volume during a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is critical for maintaining liver perfusion and decreasing the incidence of liver insufficiency. A stent-graft is proved to be superior to a bare metal stent (BMS) for the construction of a TIPS. However, the clinical results of the combination application of stents and stent-grafts have not been determined.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effects of two medications, r-tPA and urokinase, on patients with acute and severe pulmonary embolism after undergoing interventional thrombectomy.
  • Clinical data from 19 patients were analyzed, comparing heart and pulmonary pressures, oxygen levels, and treatment times before and after thrombolysis in both medication groups.
  • Results showed that while both drugs improved patient conditions, r-tPA was more effective in shortening the thrombolysis time without increasing the risk of bleeding compared to urokinase.

Context: In the milder form of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), cancellous bone, represented by areal bone mineral density at the lumbar spine by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), is preserved. This finding is in contrast to high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HRpQCT) results of abnormal trabecular microstructure and epidemiological evidence for increased overall fracture risk in PHPT. Because DXA does not directly measure trabecular bone and HRpQCT is not widely available, we used trabecular bone score (TBS), a novel gray-level textural analysis applied to spine DXA images, to estimate indirectly trabecular microarchitecture.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

J Neurosci Rural Pract

January 2011

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common clinical disorder characterized by brief recurrent spells of vertigo often brought about by certain head position changes as may occur with looking up, turning over in bed, or straightening up after bending over. It is important to understand BPPV not only because it may avert expensive and often unnecessary testing, but also because treatment is rapid, easy, and effective in >90% of cases. The diagnosis of BPPV can be made based on the history and examination.
