This study explored the effects of long-term cold stress on aortic vascular function in guinea pigs. Research Methods: Hartley guinea pigs (n=32) were divided into following groups: atherosclerosis (AS), cold stress (CS), and menthol-stimulated (M) and control (C). On days 1, 15, 30, 45, and 60, guinea pigs in the AS, CS, and M groups were intraperitoneally injected with bovine serum albumin.

Background: A large number of studies have shown that leptin plays an important role in the regulation of fertility via the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis. However, its peripheral function in epididymis was still elusive.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the pro-secretion effect of leptin on the rat epididymal epithelium.

To explore the coupling of dry-wet seasonal variations of soil respiration with their environmental factors in the alpine meadow under the background of increasing nitrogen (N) deposition, we conducted an experiment in the typical degraded meadow in the Napahai, Yunnan. There were four treatments, ., control (0 g·m·a), low (5 g·m·a), medium (10 g·m·a), and high (15 g·m·a) levels.

Background: Most instances of small cell carcinoma originate from the lungs, while the gastrointestinal tract serves as a secondary site. Only a minuscule proportion of cases manifest within the urogenital system. Prostate small cell carcinoma (SCCP) represents an exceedingly uncommon pathological subtype within the realm of prostate cancer, displaying significant rarity in clinical settings.

In this work, we present a new time-bin phase-encoding quantum key distribution (QKD), where the transmitter utilizes an inherently stable Sagnac-type interferometer, and has comparable electrical requirements to existing polarization or phase encoding schemes. This approach does not require intensity calibration and is insensitive to environmental disturbances, making it both flexible and high-performing. We conducted experiments with a compact QKD system to demonstrate the stability and secure key rate performance of the presented scheme.

Article Synopsis
  • Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries face issues like sluggish reaction kinetics and the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides, which hinder their development.
  • The study introduces a catalytic shell for the sulfur cathode created using hexafluorocyclotriphosphene (HFPN) to reduce the shuttle effect and improve sulfur conversion efficiency.
  • This innovative shell enhances Li-S battery performance, showing excellent stability and a minimal capacity decay rate of 0.034% over 700 cycles, while achieving a high capacity of 517 mAh/g at increased discharge rates.

Hypertriglyceridemia is caused by defects in triglyceride metabolism and generally manifests as abnormally high plasma triglyceride levels. Although the role of hypertriglyceridemia may not draw as much attention as that of plasma cholesterol in stroke, plasma triglycerides, especially nonfasting triglycerides, are thought to be correlated with the risk of ischemic stroke. Hypertriglyceridemia may increase the risk of ischemic stroke by promoting atherosclerosis and thrombosis and increasing blood viscosity.

Chemotherapy resistance is still a key hurdle in current hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment. Therefore, clarifying the molecular mechanisms contributing to this acquired resistance is urgent for the effective treatment of liver cancer. In this research, we observed that lncRNA FAM225A expression is dramatically upregulated not only in hepatocellular carcinoma tissues and cell lines but also in sorafenib-resistant HepG2/SOR cells.

Background: Recently, the effects of erector spinae plane block on postoperative pain have become increasingly controversial. This meta-analysis compared the effects of ESP block versus placebo on postoperative analgesia and side effects to determine whether the new technique is a reliable alternative for pain management.

Methods: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang Database were searched for clinical studies investigating the analgesic effect of ESP block versus placebo.

Article Synopsis
  • A series of composite separation membranes made from polyurethane hydrogel and thermoplastic elastomer were created using a wet phase inversion method.
  • The membranes displayed an irregular porous structure, and tests showed alterations in their chemical and physical properties, particularly when thermoplastic elastomer was added.
  • The study found that the membranes' swelling ratios and water flux varied with the presence of functional groups, while glycine permeation was influenced significantly by external temperature and pH levels.

Two new disesquiterpenoids (1 and 2) and 11 new (3-13) and 10 known (14-23) sesquiterpenoids were isolated from the whole plants of Artemisia freyniana. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic data analysis and comparison with published NMR data. The absolute configurations of the new isolates (1-13) were assigned based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and comparison of the experimental and calculated ECD data.

Molybdenum oxide nanomaterials have recently attracted widespread attention for their unique optical properties and catalytic performance. However, until now, there is little literature on the application of photoluminescent molybdenum oxide nanomaterials in biological and pharmaceutical sensing. Herein, photoluminescent molybdenum oxide quantum dots (MoO QDs) were synthesized via a facile method, and then, the synthesized MoO QDs were further applied as a new type of photoluminescent probe to design a new off-on sensor for captopril (Cap) determination on the basis of the fact that the quenched photoluminescence of MoO QDs by Cu was restored with Cap through specific interaction between the thiol group of Cap and Cu.

In order to explore the pollution characteristics of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), 10 surface seawaters and 7 surface sediments were collected in offshore marine area of Shenzhen (offshore distance >2 km) in September 2013. All the samples were prepared by solid-phase extraction and analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/ MS). The results showed that 10 PFCs, including C4, C6 and C8 perfluorinated sulfonates (PFSAs) and C5-C11, perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) were detected in the surface waters.

Technique of homologous recombination based gene targeting developed in the late 1980s and won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2007. However, this technique could only performed in mice which embryonic stem (ES) cells could keep in the potential of multifunction in vitro. Therefore gene knockout technology was difficult to be applied in other species of animals for a long time.
