In the survey of yeast diversity in high-temperature Daqu, which is a fermentation starter for Chinese sauce-flavoured Baijiu, six yeast strains representing one novel species of the genus were isolated from samples of Daqu and surrounding environments collected in Zunyi city, Guizhou Province, China. Phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene indicate that these six strains are conspecific with three other strains isolated from flowers and duckweed collected in Samoa, India and Thailand. The representative strain QFC-8 of the new species differs from the closet species resolved by the D1/D2 sequence analysis by 13 (3.

Three yeast strains belonging to the ascomycetous yeast genus were isolated from two soil samples from Yunnan and Guizhou provinces and a marine water sample from Liaoning province, PR China. Phylogenetic analyses based on the sequences of the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit(LSU) rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region indicate that these three strains, together with 12 additional strains isolated from various substrates collected in different regions or countries of the world, represent a novel species of the genus , for which the name sp. nov.

Thrombosis plays an important role in the occurrence and development of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases that contribute to high mortality and morbidity in patients. L-(-)-Quebrachitol (QCT), a natural product, was first isolated from quebracho bark. It can inhibit PAF receptor and decrease gastric damage induced by indomethacin, as a drug against platelet aggregation.

Background: Hepatic cysts are common benign liver tumors that are typically asymptomatic. However, larger cysts, particularly giant liver cysts, can potentially induce symptoms. If the diameter of the cyst exceeds 10 cm, it can exert pressure on adjacent organs, leading to manifestations of corresponding symptoms.

Three strains belonging to the basidiomycetous yeast genus were isolated from marine water samples collected from intertidal zones in Liaoning province, northeast China. Phylogenetic analyses based on the sequences of the small subunit (SSU) ribosomal DNA (rDNA), the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) ribosomal DNA (rDNA), the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), the two subunits of DNA polymerase II ( and ), the translation elongation factor 1-α (), and the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b () showed that these strains together with 20 strains from various geographic and ecological origins from other regions of the world represent a novel species in the genus . We propose the name sp.

Neuroinflammation is believed to be a critical process involved in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, we investigated the pharmacological ability of OAB-14, a small molecule compound derived from bexarotene, to reduce neuroinflammation and improve cognitive decline in an AD mouse model (in vivo) and its ability to regulate signaling pathways implicated in neuroinflammation in vitro. It was found that OAB-14 significantly improved the cognitive function of 11-month-old AD mice (APP/PS1 transgenic mice) in a dose-dependent manner.

Article Synopsis
  • - After a spinal cord injury, levels of tau protein in the cerebrospinal fluid rise and are linked to how severe the injury is; researchers are exploring tau inhibition as a potential treatment for spinal cord injuries.
  • - In a rat study, researchers used a lentivirus to reduce tau expression, which led to decreased inflammation and a shift in microglial cells from a harmful to a protective state.
  • - The results showed that tau inhibition improved the health of surrounding neural cells, promoted regeneration, and enhanced movement recovery, suggesting tau could be a promising target for spinal cord injury therapies.

Background: Research suggests that approximately 6% of adult patients admitted to hospitals in the United States present with sepsis and there has been a minimal change in the incidence of this condition in the last decade. Furthermore, patients with cancer generally have a higher incidence of sepsis due to immunosuppression caused by cancer or its treatment.

Aim: To assess if cancer increases the mortality rates in sepsis patients by pooling evidence from contemporary studies.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the impact of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress on the health of the whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), highlighting its role in aquatic animal diseases and the need for a better understanding of environmental stress responses.
  • - Using RNA-Seq technology, researchers found significant changes in gene expression, with 286 genes upregulated and 473 downregulated when shrimp were treated with Thapsigargin, indicating the activation of the ER-stress response.
  • - The findings suggest that ER-stress affects immune-related genes, particularly Prophenoloxidase activating enzyme 2 (LvPPAE2), which plays a role in shrimp's defense against pathogens, providing insights into how shrimp

The interplay between virus and host has been one of the hot spot in virology, and it is also the important aspect of revealing the mechanism of virus infection. Increasing studies revealed that several key molecules took part in the process of virus-host interaction. White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) has been proved to affect several physiological processes of the host cells, especially apoptosis.

  • Liver metastasis from colorectal cancer (CRC) significantly contributes to CRC-related deaths, but its molecular mechanisms remain largely unclear.
  • The study utilized whole-exome sequencing on tissue samples from four CRC patients to identify genetic variations and analyze bioinformatics data.
  • Key findings include the identification of 8,565 single nucleotide variants and 429 insertions/deletions, with high mutation frequencies in genes like TTN, OBSCN, and HIPK2, indicating potential pathways involved in liver metastasis.

C-type lectins (CTLs), which bind carbohydrates in a Ca-dependent manner, are involved in many cellular activities, especially immunity. CTLs play important roles in both the antibacterial and the antiviral immune response and are also associated with autoimmunity. Several CTLs have been investigated in crustaceans, primarily with respect to their function in the immune response.

SL4, a chalcone-based compound, has been shown to retard tumor invasion and angiogenesis by suppressing HIF1 activity and to induce apoptosis by promoting ROS release. Here, we report that SL4 is able to inhibit the proliferation of different types of breast cancer cell in vitro and in vivo by inducing G/M cell cycle arrest. Our results showed that SL4 exhibited strong anti-proliferative activity in several human breast cancer cell lines, with IC values lower than 1.

Archaeological lime powders samples from Taosi and Yinxu sites, natural limestone and experimentally prepared lime mortar were investigated by means of Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) to identify the raw material of lime powders from Taosi and Yinxu sites. Results show that ν2/ν4 ratio of calcite resulted from carbonation reaction of man-made lime is around 6.31, which is higher than that of calcite in natural limestone and reflects the difference in the disorder of calcite crystal structure among the natural limestone and prepared lime mortar.
