Objectives: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in China. This study compared ethnic disparities and lifestyle determinants in the prevalence of CVD (hypertension, coronary heart disease [CHD], and stroke) among older adults of the Han majority and Ha Ni ethnic minority in rural southwest China, to provide evidence for preventing and controlling CVD among older-adult minority communities.

Methods: A multi-stage stratified random sampling method was used to select 1,413 Han majority participants and 1,402 Ha Ni ethnic minority participants aged ≥ 60 years in rural Southwest China.

China's local chicken breeds are rich in resources, and have formed different germplasm characteristics in the process of long-term selection and evolution. Scientific assessment of population genetic diversity and identification of inter-breed genetic structure are of great value to the protection and innovative utilization of local chicken breed resource. In order to evaluate the application effectiveness of 23K SNP chip "Youxin-1" in the analysis of genetic diversity and genetic structure of local chickens, we used RADseq to identify genomic genetic variation of 21 local chicken breeds and developed 23K chip "Youxin-1".

Objectives: This study aimed to examine ethnic disparities in the prevalence of diabetes and its association with sleep disorders among the older adults Han and ethnic minority (Bai, Ha Ni, and Dai) population in rural southwest China.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 5,642 was conducted among the rural southwest population aged ≥60 years, consisting of a structured interview and measurement of fasting blood glucose, height, weight, and waist circumference. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality.

Article Synopsis
  • Chinese patent medicines with Epimedii Folium and Psoraleae Fructus have been linked to idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury (IDILI), but the specific toxic biomarkers and mechanisms are not well understood.
  • The study focused on the effects of bavachin and epimedin B from these plants on liver injury models induced by TNF-α, using both in vitro (cell cultures) and in vivo (mice) methods to measure liver damage.
  • Results indicated that combining bavachin and epimedin B exacerbated liver injury in TNF-α treated mice, shown by increased liver enzyme levels (ALT and AST) and inflammation, along with distinctive metabolites identified through metabolomics analysis.

Depression can trigger an inflammatory response that affects the immune system, leading to the development of other diseases related to inflammation. Xiao-Yao-San (XYS) is a commonly used formula in clinical practice for treating depression. However, it remains unclear whether XYS has a modulating effect on the inflammatory response associated with depression.

Lanthanide-containing polyoxometalate-based metal-organic frameworks (POMOFs) not only enjoy intriguing architectures but also have good application prospects as catalysts. Herein, three novel three-dimensional (3D) POMOFs with the formulas of {H[Ln(2,6-pydc)(HO)(MnMoO)]·2HO} (Ln = La(), Pr(), Nd()) have been synthesized based on Waugh-type [MnMoO] anions and pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate (2,6-Hpydc). Compounds - are isomorphic, and there are two kinds of one-dimensional (1D) helical chains with opposite handedness staggered into two-dimensional (2D) layers.

Background: Retroauricular injection is a local steroid hormone administration method commonly used to treat deafness or tinnitus. The acute stage of Bell's Palsy is an acute disease that requires steroid therapy. Retroauricular injection may replace oral administration of steroid hormones in the treatment of this disease as well as reduce the occurrence of adverse reactions.

PIWI-clade proteins harness piRNAs of 24-33 nt in length. Of great puzzles are how PIWI-clade proteins incorporate piRNAs of different sizes and whether the size matters to PIWI/piRNA function. Here we report that a PIWI-Ins module unique in PIWI-clade proteins helps define the length of piRNAs.

Article Synopsis
  • PbYb Nb O (PYN)-based ceramics are promising for high energy storage due to their low sintering temperature and ultra-high phase-switching field, but they struggle with insufficient breakdown strength which limits their performance.
  • This study employs a strategy of Ba substitution and microstructure optimization through hot-pressing to enhance the energy storage capabilities, achieving significant energy densities and high current and power densities with 2 mol% Ba doping.
  • In situ characterization reveals the movement of B-site ions under an electric field is crucial for maximizing the phase-switching field, while finer grain structure from microengineering improves breakdown strength, highlighting PYN ceramics' potential in energy storage applications.

Background: Diabetes has become a major public health problem in China. A better understanding of diabetes determinants and urban-rural differences is essential to crafting targeted diabetes prevention measures for the elderly living in both urban and rural areas. This study aimed to compare rural-urban differentials in prevalence and lifestyle determinants of pre-diabetes and diabetes among the elderly in southwest China.

Achieving long-term stable deep desulfurization at room temperature and recovering high value-added sulfone products is a challenge at present. Herein, a series of catalysts [Cmim]VWOBr (CVW, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide tungstovanadate, n = 4, 8, 16) were presented for the room temperature catalytic oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT) and its derivatives. Factors affecting the reaction process, such as the amount of catalyst, oxidant, and temperature, were systematically discussed.

Human monkeypox, caused by monkeypox virus, has spread unprecedentedly to more than 100 countries since May 2022. Here we summarized the epidemiology of monkeypox through a literature review and elucidated the risks and elimination strategies of this outbreak mainly based on the summarized epidemiology. We demonstrated that monkeypox virus became more contagious and less virulent in 2022, which could result from the fact that the virus entered a special transmission network favoring close contacts (i.

The combination of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and arsenic trioxide (ATO) has been demonstrated to have comparable effectiveness or better to ATRA and chemotherapy (CHT) in non-high-risk acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). However, the efficacy of ATRA-ATO compared to ATRA-ATO plus CHT in high-risk APL remains unknown. Here we performed a randomized multi-center non-inferiority phase III study to compare the efficacy of ATRA-ATO and ATRA-ATO plus CHT in newly diagnosed all-risk APL to address this question.

Two three-dimensional frameworks based on the {PMo} unit, H(4,4'-bipy)[Fe(PO)(HO)Na][Fe(HO)][(MoO)(HPO)(PO)(OH)]·5HO (4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine) (1) and H(CHN)[Fe(PO)(HO)Na][Fe(MoO(HPO)(PO)(OH))]·6HO (2) were successfully synthesized by varying the solvent. The extended structures of the two compounds were formed by transition metal Fe(II) ions bridging the {PMo}-based tetrameric clusters around [NaFe(PO)] ( = 6 (1), or = 4 (2)) core. The 4,4'-bipy molecules and generated methyl viologen cations as templates induce the formation of two three-dimensional structures, an 8-connected bcu topology framework for 1 and a 4-connected 2-fold interpenetrating diamond-like topological network for 2, respectively.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 remains risky worldwide. We elucidate here that good IDM (isolation, disinfection, and maintenance of health) is powerful to reduce COVID-19 deaths based on the striking differences in COVID-19 case fatality rates among various scenarios. IDM means keeping COVID-19 cases away from each other and from other people, disinfecting their living environments, and maintaining their health through good nutrition, rest, and treatment of symptoms and pre-existing diseases (not through specific antiviral therapy).
