Article Synopsis
  • - Levels of progesterone increase after ovulation and are vital for supporting pregnancy, but gut microbiota can influence these levels by affecting the hormone's recycling in the liver and gut.
  • - A specific gut bacterium plays a key role in metabolizing progesterone into a neurosteroid, which does not have progestogenic activity; researchers identified the enzyme responsible for this conversion.
  • - In experiments with female mice, certain antibiotics helped restore progesterone levels, and prolonged antibiotic use disrupted ovarian follicle development, suggesting a link between gut bacteria and progesterone resistance in women.

Steroidal estrogens are ubiquitous contaminants that have garnered attention worldwide due to their endocrine-disrupting and carcinogenic activities at sub-nanomolar concentrations. Microbial degradation is one of the main mechanisms through which estrogens can be removed from the environment. Numerous bacteria have been isolated and identified as estrogen degraders; however, little is known about their contribution to environmental estrogen removal.

Abnormally high circulating androgen levels have been considered a causative factor for benign prostatic hypertrophy and prostate cancer in men. Recent animal studies on gut microbiome suggested that gut bacteria are involved in sex steroid metabolism; however, the underlying mechanisms and bacterial taxa remain elusive. Denitrifying betaproteobacteria spp.

Perceptions of, and attitudes toward, wildlife are influenced by exposure to, and direct experiences with, nature. Butterflies are a conspicuous and ubiquitous component of urban nature across megacities that are highly urbanized with little opportunity for human-nature interactions. We evaluated public familiarity with, perceptions of and attitudes toward butterflies across nine megacities in East and Southeast Asia through face-to-face interviews with 1774 urban park users.

Background: Neuropathic pain is an abnormally increased sensitivity to pain, especially from mechanical or thermal stimuli. To date, the current pharmacological treatments for neuropathic pain are still unsatisfactory. The gut microbiota reportedly plays important roles in inducing neuropathic pain, so probiotics have also been used to treat it.

Article Synopsis
  • - Consensus on the best high-throughput sequencing (HTS) method for studying biodiversity in mixed terrestrial arthropod samples is lacking, prompting exploration of metatranscriptomics for enhanced mitochondrial reads.
  • - A comparison of 16S rRNA metabarcoding, metagenomics, and metatranscriptomics revealed that the first two methods detected 97% of input species, while metagenomics showed an 82% detection rate but had more reference matches.
  • - Metatranscriptomics, particularly with nuclear rRNA depletion, may reduce false reads and maintain high detection rates, offering a promising alternative that enhances species detection compared to traditional metagenomic approaches.

Background: Over the past 50 years, Southeast Asia has suffered the greatest losses of biodiversity of any tropical region in the world. Malaysia is a biodiversity hotspot in the heart of Southeast Asia with roughly the same number of mammal species, three times the number of butterfly species, but only 4% of the land area of Australia. Consequently, in Malaysia, there is an urgent need for biodiversity monitoring and also public engagement with wildlife to raise awareness of biodiversity loss.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the seroepidemiology of Toxoplasma infection and its risk association among people having close contact with animals. A total of 312 blood samples were collected from veterinary personnel (veterinarian, technicians, and students) and pet owners from veterinary clinics and hospitals in the area of Klang Valley, Malaysia. About 4 cc of blood samples drawn from agreed participants were processed for measurement of anti-Toxoplasma IgG and IgM antibodies as well as avidity test of Toxoplasma IgG by ELISA I, II, and III kits.
