Article Synopsis
  • SC31 is a powerful neutralizing antibody against SARS-CoV-2, developed from a patient who recovered from COVID-19, displaying strong efficacy in various animal models.
  • It works by targeting a specific site on the Spike protein of the virus, reducing viral loads and inflammation in infected mice and hamsters, and achieving undetectable viral levels in rhesus macaques.
  • The effectiveness of SC31 is enhanced by its interactions with immune system components and exhibits a dose-dependent response, showing therapeutic promise without causing harmful antibody-related effects.

Methods for the study of member species in complex microbial communities remain a high priority, particularly for rare and/or novel member species that might play an important ecological role. Specifically, methods that link genomic information of member species with its spatial structure are lacking. This study adopts an integrative workflow that permits the characterisation of previously unclassified bacterial taxa from microbiomes through: (1) imaging of the spatial structure; (2) taxonomic classification and (3) genome recovery.

Inspired by an example found in nature, the design of patterned surfaces with chemical and topographical contrast for the collection of water from the atmosphere has been of intense interest in recent years. Herein we report the synthesis of such materials via a combination of macromolecular design and polymer thin film dewetting to yield surfaces consisting of raised hydrophilic bumps on a hydrophobic background. RAFT polymerization was used to synthesize poly(2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (PHPMA) of targeted molecular weight and low dispersity; spin-coating of PHPMA onto polystyrene films produced stable polymer bilayers under appropriate conditions.

Dengue virus (DENV) is the principal arthropod-borne viral pathogen afflicting human populations. While repertoires of antibodies to DENV have been linked to protection or enhanced infection, the role of T lymphocytes in these processes remains poorly defined. This study provides a comprehensive overview of CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell epitope reactivities against the DENV 2 proteome in adult patients experiencing secondary DENV infection.
