Objectives: To investigate temporal trends in the use of non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs) and vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) in combination with aspirin and/or clopidogrel in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) following acute myocardial infarction (MI) and/or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Methods: Using Danish nationwide registries, all patients with AF who survived 30 days after discharge from MI and/or PCI between 22 August 2011 and 30 September 2016 were identified.
Results: A total of 2946 patients were included in the study population, of whom 1967 (66.
Introduction, Materials And Methods: We used Danish nationwide registries to examine temporal trends in the predicted stroke and bleeding risks (mean CHADS-VASc and HAS-BLED scores per year, respectively) as well as the combination of selected stroke and bleeding risk factors per year among atrial fibrillation (AF) patients initiated for the first time between 2011 and 2016 on vitamin K antagonists (VKAs), dabigatran, rivaroxaban, or apixaban.
Results: In total, 53,860 AF patients were included (VKA 37.7%, dabigatran 24.
Background: Returning to the workforce after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) holds important socioeconomic consequences not only for patients, but the society as well. Yet data on this issue are limited. We examined return to the workforce and associated factors in patients of working age undergoing CABG.

Over time, experience and techniques have improved and indications for ablation have expanded. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the recurrence rate of AF following ablation has improved during last decade.

Methods And Results: Using individual-level linkage of data from nationwide registries, we identified patients of working age (30-65 years) discharged after first-time MI in the period 1997 to 2012, who were employed before admission. To assess the cumulative incidence of return to work and detachment from employment, the Aalen Johansen estimator was used.

Background And Objectives: Endocarditis is a serious complication in patients treated with RRT. The study aimed to examine incidence and risk factors of endocarditis in patients with ESRD.
Design, Setting, Participants, & Measurements: The Danish National Registry on Regular Dialysis and Transplantation contains data on all Danish patients receiving renal replacement (hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or kidney transplantation) for ESRD.
Background: Surgical patients receiving psychopharmacologic treatment have been associated with adverse outcomes in total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA and TKA). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a specific high-risk group of patients receiving psychopharmacologic treatment could be identified based upon a nationwide psychiatric diagnosis register.
Methods: From 7 different orthopedic centers, 8288 THA and TKA patients were included from January 2010 to November 2012 of which 943 (11.
Psoriasis is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease, which, in studies among adults, have been shown to cluster with autoimmune disease. The aim of this cross-sectional register study was to examine possible associations between 9 pre-selected autoimmune diseases and psoriasis in children and adolescents. The study population consisted of all individuals living in Denmark, age under 18 years on 31 December 2012.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAims: After non-vitamin K antagonist (VKA) oral anticoagulation agents (NOAC) have been approved for thrombo-embolic prophylaxis in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), utilization of oral anticoagulants (OAC) in NVAF has changed. Contemporary shifting from a VKA to a NOAC (dabigatran, rivaroxaban, or apixaban) has not been quantified, and could help assess whether these drugs are used according to recommendations.
Methods And Results: Using Danish nationwide registries, we identified all VKA-experienced NVAF patients initiating a NOAC from 22 August 2011 to 31 December 2015 (shifters) and all VKA-experienced NVAF patients who were not switched to NOACs (non-shifters).
Background: Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) have increased risk of thromboembolic events such as stroke and myocardial infarction (MI). Although it has been established that the efficacy of anticoagulation is superior to that of antiplatelet agents for stroke prophylaxis in AF, the optimal antithrombotic treatment remains uncertain for primary protection against MI.
Objectives: The authors investigated the incidence of first-time MI in patients with AF according to antithrombotic treatment and estimated the risk of stroke and bleeding.
Danish nationwide registries were used to investigate temporal trends in initiation of rivaroxaban or apixaban or dabigatran versus vitamin K antagonists (VKA) in patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE). Patients treated with one of the NOACs (rivaroxaban, dabigatran, apixaban) or VKA were identified between February 2012 and September 2016. A total of 19,578 patients were included of which 10,844 (55.

Objectives: We sought to examine the prevalence and risk of selected ocular comorbidities in adult patients with AD.
Background: The outcomes of emergent noncardiac, nonintracranial surgery in patients with previous stroke remain unknown.
Methods: All emergency surgeries performed in Denmark (2005 to 2011) were analyzed according to time elapsed between previous ischemic stroke and surgery. The risks of 30-day mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events were estimated as odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs using adjusted logistic regression models in a priori defined groups (reference was no previous stroke).
Aim: The present study aimed to investigate temporal trends in myocardial infarction (MI) presentation with or without ST-segment elevation and the association with the use of cardioprotective drugs prior to admission.
Methods And Results: Using individual-level linkage of data from Danish nationwide registries, we identified all patients 30 years or older admitted with a first-time MI in the period 2003-2012, and their use of cardioprotective drugs 6 months prior to admission. We calculated incidence rates per 100 000 person-years (IRs) of ST-segment elevation MI (STEMI) and non-STEMI (NSTEMI).
Several studies have suggested that family history of atrial fibrillation (AF) is an important risk factor for AF, with several specific genetic regions now implicated through Genome Wide Association Studies. In addition, familial AF is associated with earlier age of onset and affects patients with fewer comorbid conditions than their non-familial counterparts. While those with familial AF have worse symptoms, all-cause mortality and risk of thromboembolic complications are similar among familial and non-familial AF patients.

Methods: Using nationwide registry data, we estimated the number of patients with incident PsA within each 1-year period between 1997 and 2011 and calculated the rate of PsA cases within gender and age subgroups. Incidence rates were presented per 100 000 person-years.
Aims: Beta-blockers vary in pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetic properties. It is unknown whether specific types are associated with increased perioperative risks. We evaluated perioperative risks associated with beta-blocker subtypes, overall and in patient subgroups.

Methods: We linked nationwide data on out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in Denmark to functional outcome data and reported the 1-year risks of anoxic brain damage or nursing home admission and of death from any cause among patients who survived to day 30 after an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. We analyzed risks according to whether bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or defibrillation was performed and evaluated temporal changes in bystander interventions and outcomes.
Hyperprolactinemia has been suspected to increase mortality risk, but the available data are conflicting. The objective of this study was to estimate the association between hyperprolactinemia and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among patients referred for assessment of prolactin. For this study, adults with no prio pituitary disease who underwent prolactin assessment at 3 university Hospitals in Denmark between 2001 and 2011 were included in a retrospective cohort study.
