How phenotypic diversity originates and persists within populations are classic puzzles in evolutionary biology. While balanced polymorphisms segregate within many species, it remains rare for both the genetic basis and the selective forces to be known, leading to an incomplete understanding of many classes of traits under balancing selection. Here, we uncover the genetic architecture of a balanced sexual mimicry polymorphism and identify behavioral mechanisms that may be involved in its maintenance in the swordtail fish Xiphophorus birchmanni.

While well-studied for ecological traits, there is also evidence for recurrent evolution of sexually selected traits. Swordtail fish (Xiphophorus) is a classic model system for studying sexual selection, and female Xiphophorus exhibit strong mate preferences for large male body sizes and a range of sexually dimorphic ornaments.

As a result, the genomes of many modern species harbor regions inherited from related species. This observation has raised fundamental questions about the degree to which the genomic outcomes of hybridization are repeatable and the degree to which natural selection drives such repeatability.

This study explored Australian radiographers' environmental attitude, pharmaceutical waste disposal practices, and knowledge and concern regarding the environmental impact of these pharmaceuticals.
Methods: This study utilised an anonymous, online questionnaire developed from two validated questionnaires.
Background: Worldwide there has been a shift in the ideology within healthcare systems that focuses on 'people' rather than the 'patients'. A patient should not only be perceived by their condition but rather viewed holistically as a person. Within a South African (SA) context, the constitution has been amended to state that all South African citizens have the right to healthcare that is caring, free from harm, and effective.

However, recent research has demonstrated that hybridization has been pervasive across the tree of life even in the presence of strong barriers. Swordtail fishes (genus ) are an emerging model system for studying the interface between these barriers and hybridization.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe evolution of reproductive barriers is the first step in the formation of new species and can help us understand the diversification of life on Earth. These reproductive barriers often take the form of hybrid incompatibilities, in which alleles derived from two different species no longer interact properly in hybrids. Theory predicts that hybrid incompatibilities may be more likely to arise at rapidly evolving genes and that incompatibilities involving multiple genes should be common, but there has been sparse empirical data to evaluate these predictions.

It is expressed in many tissues, including the brain, where it is expressed primarily on astrocytes and plays key roles in neuronal differentiation and development, maintaining neurotransmitter homeostasis, and N-methyl-D-aspartate neurotransmission, through regulation of L- and D-serine. Mutations in SLC1A4 are associated with the rare autosomal recessive neurodevelopmental disorder spastic tetraplegia, thin corpus callosum, and progressive microcephaly (SPATCCM, OMIM 616657).

Starting in May 2021, a combination of survey design and focus groups were used to examine beginning teachers' well-being, resiliency, and perceptions on early career teaching and pandemic considerations. Compared to the previous year of data collection administration in 2019-2020, participants reported significantly less positive responses related to professional factors, but in terms of personal factors, participants remained efficacious and resilient.

We set out to describe our institutional experience with extremely prolonged (> 50 d) venovenous ECMO support for recovery or bridge to lung transplant candidacy in patients with acute respiratory failure.
Design: Retrospective cohort study.
The 35th International Mammalian Genome Conference (IMGC) was held on July 17-20, 2022 in Vancouver, British Columbia; this conference marked the first time the International Mammalian Genome Society (IMGS) hosted a meeting in Canada. Scientists from around the world participated to share advances in genetics and genomics research across mammalian species. A diverse attendance of pre-doctoral and post-doctoral trainees, young investigators, established researchers, clinicians, bioinformaticians, and computational biologists enjoyed a rich scientific program selected from 88 abstracts in the fields of cancer, conservation genetics, developmental biology, epigenetics, human disease modeling, immunology, infectious diseases, systems genetics, translational biology, and technological advances.

Both arms of a 24-week randomized controlled trial comparing open-source AID (OpenAPS algorithm within a modified version of AndroidAPS, preproduction DANA-i™ insulin pump, Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitor) with sensor-augmented pump therapy (SAPT), entered a 24-week continuation phase where the SAPT arm (termed SAPT-AID) crossed over to join the open-source AID arm (termed AID-AID). Most participants (69/94) used a preproduction YpsoPump insulin pump during the continuation phase.

Many species across the tree of life show evidence of past hybridization with their evolutionary relatives. The purpose of this study was to quantitate motor performance in 196 genetically confirmed steroid-naïve boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), to evaluate the test-retest reliability of measures of motor performance in young DMD boys, and to assess correlations among the different functional outcomes including timed tests. Boys aged 4-7 years were recruited in the FOR-DMD study, a comparative effectiveness study of different steroid regimens in DMD. Eligible boys had to be able to rise from the floor independently and to perform pulmonary function testing consistently.

One common mechanism is adaptive introgression, which has received increasing attention as a potential route to rapid adaptation in populations struggling in the face of ecological change, particularly global climate change. However, hybridization can also result in deleterious genetic interactions that may limit the benefits of adaptive introgression.

We find that mutations and teratogens interact in predictable ways to cause birth defects by changing target cell sensitivity to Hedgehog (Hh) ligands. These interactions converge on a membrane protein complex, the MMM complex, that promotes degradation of the Hh transducer Smoothened (SMO).

Introduction: Simulation-based education (SBE) can replicate the challenging aspects of real-world clinical environments, while providing a safe and less intimidating setting. Literature supports its use within medical radiation science (MRS) training for safe practice of psychomotor skills, development of problem solving, team working, interpersonal and decision-making skills and embedding awareness of patient safety. This project aimed to quantify usage of SBE resources and activities internationally and to evaluate how this changed during COVID-19 restrictions.

The bicaval dual lumen cannula (DLC) is an option for patients requiring respiratory support with VV-ECMO. The catheter is inserted via the internal jugular vein into the superior and inferior vena cava, drains blood into the ECMO circuit for gas exchange, and then returns arterialized blood to the right heart for circulation.
