An erector spinae plane block (ESPB), in which a local anesthetic is injected into the plane anterior to the erector spinae muscles, is a relatively new technique for delivering regional anesthesia and is typically performed in the mid-thoracic region. ESPBs demonstrate great potential to control regional neuropathic pain, and, accordingly, may be particularly effective at the T1 level for controlling pain in patients undergoing first rib resections for thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). Four patients undergoing first rib resections for TOS were administered an ultrasound-guided ESPB at the T1 level.

Background: Perceived age (PA) has been associated with mortality, genetic variants linked to ageing and several age-related morbidities. However, estimating PA in large datasets is laborious and costly to generate, limiting its practical applicability.

Objectives: To determine if estimating PA using deep learning-based algorithms results in the same associations with morbidities and genetic variants as human-estimated perceived age.

Whole-skin DNA methylation variation has been implicated in several diseases, including melanoma, but its genetic basis has not yet been fully characterized. Using bulk skin tissue samples from 414 healthy female UK twins, we performed twin-based heritability and methylation quantitative trait loci (meQTL) analyses for >400,000 DNA methylation sites. We find that the human skin DNA methylome is on average less heritable than previously estimated in blood and other tissues (mean heritability: 10.

Unlabelled: Uterine natural killer cells (uNKs) are a tissue resident lymphocyte population that are critical for pregnancy success. Although mouse models have demonstrated that NK deficiency results in abnormal placentation and poor pregnancy outcomes, the generalizability of this knowledge to humans remains unclear. Here we identify uterus transplant (UTx) recipients as a human population with reduced uNK cells and altered pregnancy phenotypes.

CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) T cell therapy has shown clinical success in treating hematological malignancies, but its treatment of solid tumors has been limited. One major challenge is on-target, off-tumor toxicity, where CAR T cells also damage normal tissues that express the targeted antigen. To reduce this detrimental side-effect, Boolean-logic gates like AND-NOT gates have utilized an inhibitory CAR (iCAR) to specifically curb CAR T cell activity at selected nonmalignant tissue sites.

Hepatic venous outflow is a pivotal factor in liver transplant. However, venous anomalies and the potential for hepatic venous congestion continue to remain major points of concern to ensure the viability of transplanted livers and maximize regenerative capacity. We present a 66-year-old patient undergoing liver transplantation who was found to have anomalous venous drainage requiring venous anastomoses.

Hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) methods are a powerful computational tool for the investigation of all forms of catalysis, as they allow for an accurate description of reactions occurring at catalytic sites in the context of a complicated electrostatic environment. The scriptable computational chemistry environment ChemShell is a leading software package for QM/MM calculations, providing a flexible, high performance framework for modelling both biomolecular and materials catalysis. We present an overview of recent applications of ChemShell to problems in catalysis and review new functionality introduced into the redeveloped Python-based version of ChemShell to support catalytic modelling.

We present a dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) model capable of capturing the liquid state phase behavior of nonionic surfactants from the alkyl ethoxylate (CE) family. The model is based upon our recent work [Anderson et al. , , 094503] but adopts tighter control of the molecular structure by setting the bond angles with guidance from molecular dynamics simulations.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgeries cover a vast assortment of surgical procedures such as tooth extractions, tissue biopsies, and extensive maxillofacial surgeries. Major complications that occur during and after TMJ surgeries include uncontrolled bleeding, considerable blood loss, serious infections, and edema. Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an antifibrinolytic agent that reduces blood loss by inhibiting the enzymatic breakdown of fibrin.
