Article Synopsis
  • The study examined healthy airline pilots' risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) after long-haul night flights, using daytime sleep tests on 103 pilots.
  • Results showed that 70.9% of pilots without a known OSA history had moderate-to-severe OSA, indicated by high apnea-hypopnea and respiratory disturbance indices.
  • Key factors influencing OSA severity included body mass index, flight experience, and sleep disturbance, highlighting the need for further research into sleep management protocols to enhance pilot health and flight safety.

Objective: To introduce our technique and results of retropleural/peritoneal lateral pediculectomy for the decompression of thoracolumbar fractures and reconstruction using an expandable titanium cage and circumferential fixation at a single stage.

Methods: Eighteen patients who had single unstable, burst thoracolumbar fracture were treated by this technique between January 2014 and December 2016 (T12: n = 9, L1: n = 7, L2: n = 2). They were reviewed retrospectively in terms of radiologic outcomes (computed tomography [CT] scan and radiograph), clinical outcomes, and complications.

In this study, an improved analytical method for the detection of the colorant Brown FK in foods using high-performance liquid chromatography was developed. The method, which employed an RC-C18 column and diode array detection at 254 nm with sodium acetate solution and methanol as mobile phases, exhibited good linearity (R2 = 1.0), and its limits of detection and quantification were determined to be 0.

An improved method for the analysis of propylene glycol (PG) in foods using a gas chromatography-flame ionisation detector (GC-FID), with confirmation by GC-MS, was validated by measuring several analytical parameters. The PG concentrations in 1073 products available in Korean markets were determined. PG was detected in 74.

Homogeneously aligned twisted nematic liquid crystals (TN-LCs) were produced on molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) thin films via ion beam (IB) irradiation. Control of the pretilt angle was achieved by varying the IB incident angle. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that the intensity of the Mo-O and O-Mo bonds at various IB incident angles exhibited the tendency that was opposite to that of the pretilt angle and the lowest intensity was produced at 45°.

Backgrounds/aims: The post-operative complications and clinical course of pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) largely depend on the pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ). Several methods of PJ are in clinical use. We analyzed the early results of binding pancreaticojejunostomy (BPJ), a technique reported by SY Peng.

Purpose: To assess the therapeutic value of two different drainage catheters in treating chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH).

Materials And Methods: Two types of drainage catheters can be used to treat CSDH according to the position of holes in the catheter: open-type or closed-type catheter. In this retrospective study, 199 total patients with CSDH were reviewed according to catheter type.
