The use of intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) is thought to reverse the acute neurological and cardiac toxicities generated by local anesthetic and non-anesthetic drugs. The aim of this review is to provide an updated overview of ILE therapy in the management of the toxic efects of medications on humans. Indications, mechanisms of action, monitoring, dosing, lipid formulations, adverse efects, and contraindications related to ILE are highlighted.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measurements from CT scans in predicting mortality and disease severity in patients with hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in the emergency department.
  • A total of 217 HE patients and an equal number of healthy controls were examined, revealing a 32.7% mortality rate among HE patients, with various factors identified as independent predictors of both mortality and disease severity.
  • The findings indicate that ONSD measurements are a strong predictor for assessing the prognosis of HE patients, potentially aiding clinicians in decision-making.

Objective: Weather conditions such as low air temperatures, low barometric pressure, and low wind speed have been linked to more cases of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. However, limited literature exists regarding the impact of air pollution. This study aims to investigate the relationship between outdoor air pollution and CO poisoning in 2 distinct cities in Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) data in Türkiye, focusing on prognostic outcomes and influencing factors for patients aged 18 and older who were treated at 28 medical centers.
  • It found a survival rate upon hospital discharge of only 4.4%, with a significant majority of patients not receiving bystander CPR, which was only performed in 2.9% of cases.
  • Key predictors for better outcomes included male gender, initial shockable heart rhythms, shorter prehospital CPR duration, and no need for CPR in the emergency department, highlighting the importance of timely and effective CPR in emergencies.

Background: The serum calcium plays a role as a cofactor in critical steps such as cardiac contractility, vascular tone, and the coagulation cascade. This study aimed to determine if the level of ionized calcium can predict outcomes in patients with spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in the emergency department.

Methods: The study was a retrospective cross-sectional case series.

Aim: The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship between negative acute-phase reactants and positive acute-phase reactants with in-hospital mortality in patients diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in the emergency department (ED).

Methods And Materials: Patients aged 18 and older who presented to the ED of a tertiary hospital with AIS were included in the study. Demographic and clinical characteristics, laboratory parameters, acute-phase reactants, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), and outcome data of the included patients were recorded on a standard data form.

Purpose: To determine the factors affecting mortality as a result of the analysis of the demographic and clinical characteristics and laboratory parameters of patients whose serum Na value was determined to be 125 mEq/L or below at the time of admission to the emergency department (ED).

Method: Patients over 18 years of age who admitted to the ED of a tertiary hospital between September 2021 and September 2022 and whose serum sodium level was determined to be 125 mEq/L and below were included in the study. Demographic and clinical characteristics, admission complaints, medications used, Charles comorbidity index (CCI), laboratory parameters, and outcomes of the patients included in the study were recorded in the data form.

Background: The aim of this study is to compare the laboratory findings and disease severity scores of patients diagnosed with hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in the emergency department (ED) to predict 30-day mortality.

Method: The patients over 18 years old and diagnosed HE in the ED of a tertiary hospital were included in the study. Demographic and clinical characteristics, laboratory parameters, predisposing causes and outcomes of the patients included in the study were recorded in the data form.

Low-grade inflammation is a hallmark of old age and a central driver of ageing-associated impairment and disease. Multiple factors can contribute to ageing-associated inflammation; however, the molecular pathways that transduce aberrant inflammatory signalling and their impact in natural ageing remain unclear. Here we show that the cGAS-STING signalling pathway, which mediates immune sensing of DNA, is a critical driver of chronic inflammation and functional decline during ageing.

Article Synopsis
  • A study compared the effectiveness of three risk scoring systems (CSRS, SFSR, OESIL) in predicting major cardiac events and mortality within 30 days for patients who experienced syncope in the emergency department.
  • A total of 421 adult patients were included, with a 30-day mortality rate of 5.5% and a 12.8% incidence of major adverse cardiac events.
  • The Canadian Syncope Risk Score (CSRS) was found to be the most effective predictor of 30-day mortality, suggesting its usefulness as a safety tool for risk assessment post-emergency department discharge.

High entropy alloys (HEA) are one of the modern-era alloys accelerating with greater velocity because of their excellent properties and different applications. In the present paper, we have successfully fabricated HEA (23Fe-21Cr-18Ni-20Ti-18Mn) powders by ball milling the elemental Fe, Cr, Ni, Ti, and Mn powders for 15 h. The advancement of the milling process and phase transformation of HEAs were studied by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM).
