Article Synopsis
  • Parkinson's Disease (PD) is characterized by neuroinflammation, and the nuclear receptor NR1H4 is found to play a role in regulating inflammation in the central nervous system.
  • Research using various molecular techniques revealed that NR1H4 expression decreases during PD progression, and manipulating its levels affects astrocyte activation and inflammatory responses.
  • Activating NR1H4 with Obeticholic acid showed promise in reducing neuroinflammation and promoting neuron survival, highlighting its potential neuroprotective effects against PD.

Sleep disorders represent prevalent non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), affecting over 90% of the PD population. Insomnia, characterized by difficulties in initiating and maintaining sleep, emerges as the most frequently reported sleep disorder in PD, with prevalence rates reported from 27 to 80% across studies. Insomnia not only significantly impacts the quality of life of PD patients but is also associated with cognitive impairment, motor disabilities, and emotional deterioration.

Article Synopsis
  • * A systematic review of literature identified 21 studies that show PBL is widely adopted and effective for improving critical thinking and teamwork, but it faces challenges like faculty resistance and resource shortages.
  • * To successfully implement PBL in China, it's important to provide proper training for faculty, create effective assessment methods, and establish supportive environments for collaborative learning.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of modified Dioscorea pills (MDP) on microcirculatory remodeling in the hippocampus of rats with chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) through the angiopoietin (Ang)/tyrosine kinase receptor tyrosine kinase with immunoglobulin-like and EGF-like domains (Ang receptor) 2 (Tie-2) signaling pathways, which may underlie the cognitive improvement observed in CCH rats.

Methods: Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats raised under specific pathogen-free conditions were randomly divided into three groups: control group (10 rats), model group (15 rats), and MDP group (15 rats). The rats in the model group and MDP group underwent bilateral common carotid artery occlusion using the 2-vessel occlusion (2-VO) method to induce CCH.

Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is a rare movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions on one side of the face. Compared to the high therapeutic effect, adverse effects of botulinum toxin treatment for HFS occurred rarely. However, managing HFS patients who are also taking antithrombotic drugs poses a challenge.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a common comorbid sleep disorder. The prevalence of OSA in PD is high, and its impact on quality of life, accident risk, and limited treatment options underscores the need for vigilant monitoring and effective interventions. OSA is observed in 20-70% of PD patients, whereas the general population exhibits a lower prevalence ranging from 2 to 14%.
