Although is a plant widely used in traditional medicine in sub-Saharan Africa, its biological properties have been poorly investigated to date. We first characterized by conventional reactions the composition of several stem bark extracts and evaluated in acellular and cellular assays their pro- or antioxidant properties supported by their high phenolic and flavonoid content, particularly with the methanolic extract. The pro- or antioxidant effects observed did not correlate with their IC concentrations against five cancer cell lines determined by MTT assay.

L. (Malvaceae) is a plant used in Burkina Faso for the treatment of various ailments including asthma. The aim of the study was to evaluate the pharmacological relaxant effect of the leafy stem extracts of and thereby verify claim of use in treating asthma.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLiver disease is highly prevalent in Africa, especially in the western African country Burkina Faso, due to the presence of multiple biological and chemical aggressors of the liver. Furthermore, diagnosis and appropriate care for liver disease are uneven and usually insufficient. This drives local communities to turn to folk medicine based on medicinal plants from healers.

This study investigated whether oral administration of the ethyl acetate fraction of trunk barks (LMAE) corrects angiotensin (Ang) II-induced hypertension in mice. Its effects on vascular function were specifically investigated.

Medicinal treatment of arterial hypertension (AH) may cause adverse effects which can be annoying and thus influence patient's compliance with treatment. Our study focused on these undesirable effects in patients followed up for AH on an ambulatory basis in the Department of Cardiology at the University Hospital Yalgado Ouédraogo from July to September 2015. Our aim was to determine their rates and their characteristics.

The purposes of this study were to evaluate the results of autologous bone marrow grafting of the symptomatic hip in adult patients with osteonecrosis and to compare the results with core decompression alone in the contralateral symptomatic hip.
Materials And Methods: A total of 125 consecutive patients (78 males and 47 females) with bilateral osteonecrosis (ON) and who had both hips symptomatic and at the same stage on each side (stage I or II) were included in this study from 1988 to 1998.

Background: Anogeissus leiocarpus is a Sahel tree traditionally used by the residents of Burkina Faso for its antihypertensive properties. In this study, experiments were conducted to evaluate whether an aqueous extract of the Anogeissus leiocarpus (AEAL) trunk bark induces a vasorelaxant effect on porcine coronary artery rings and to investigate the underlying mechanism.
Methods: AEAL-induced relaxations were assessed using porcine coronary artery rings suspended in organ chambers.
Aim: To study spontaneous reporting of adverse effects of antimalarial drugs sent to pharmacovigilance national center.
Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted to explore spontaneous reporting of adverse effects of antimalarial drugs sent to pharmacovigilance center from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2013.
Results: In total 104 spontaneous reporting forms regarding antimalarial drugs were analysed.

The present comparative study of crude extracts of leaves (decoction, macerated extract and a 95% ethanol extract) was performed with the aim to assess the efficiency of this traditional use and to determine the most active of the three extracts. Antisickling activity was assessed by the Emmel's test.

Material And Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted from February to July 2013 in the rheumatology department. We included all patients who consulted for a rheumatic disease during the study period and who gave their consent.
Objectives: This investigation aims to provide a database of Dozo traditional knowledge of medicinal plants used for the treatment of common diseases.
Design: The study was conducted through individual interviews using a survey form. Data were recorded in a database allowing statistical analysis.
The ethyl acetate and n-butanolic subfractions of Agelanthus dodoneifolius were investigated for their antioxidant and antimyeloperoxidase (MPO) activities. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was assessed by lucigenin-enhanced chemiluminescence (CL) and dichlorofluorescein- (DCF-) induced fluorescence techniques from phorbol myristate acetate- (PMA-) stimulated equine neutrophils and human myeloid cell line HL-60, respectively. In parallel, the effects of the tested subfractions were evaluated on the total MPO release by stimulated neutrophils and on the specific MPO activity by means of immunological assays.

One strategy to mitigate issues with wound healing and infection in diabetic patients is to use a percutaneous technique in which autologous, bone marrow-derived, concentrated cells are injected at the site of non-unions.
Methods: Eighty-six ankle non-union in diabetic patients were treated with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) delivered in an autologous bone marrow concentrate (BMC).
Radiotherapy is an essential component of glioma standard treatment. Glioblastomas (GBM), however, display an important radioresistance leading to tumor recurrence. To improve patient prognosis, there is a need to radiosensitize GBM cells and to circumvent the mechanisms of resistance caused by interactions between tumor cells and their microenvironment.

Methods: A case series of 50 consecutive osteotomies performed with Limmed locked plate fixation for medial opening wedge HTO had full weight bearing immediately after the HTO; they were compared to a case-matched control series of 50 HTOs (50 patients) performed using the same implant without locked screws. Radiographs were observed at 30 days and two, three, four, five and six months after surgery.
Purpose: Long, cementless, femoral stem revisions are being used with increasing frequency. There is a relative lack of studies of late fractures after cementless implants, particularly in those patients who had a previous stem revision and are at higher risk for periprosthetic fracture after revision. In this paper, we review risk factors for periprosthetic fracture and revisions of long, cementless, locked stems and report implant survival compared with conventional, cemented, long-stem hip revision arthroplasties in such a group of patients.

The minimum thickness of the spongiousus bone in an iliac wing (transverse thickness between the two tables) is an important factor in ensuring the safe placement of a trocar between the two tables of the iliac wing. For example, with an 8-gauge (3.

Questions/purpose: We asked two questions: (1) Would a posterior-stabilized arthroplasty provide sufficient constrain and improve pain and function in patients with severe malalignment due to a previous HTO? (2) Will malalignment of the previous HTO jeopardize the long-term results of a total knee reconstruction with a posterior-stabilized implant?
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 25 posterior-stabilized TKAs in 25 patients with severe valgus deformity after HTO (ranging from 10° to 20° of valgus) and compared the results with a series of matched 25 posterior-stabilized TKAs in 25 patients with normocorrection after HTO ranging from 5° of valgus to 5° of varus. Clinical, operative, and radiographic data were reviewed.

However, in those patients with fractures a widely variable prevalence of dislocation has been reported, partly because of varying durations of follow up for this specific end-point. The purpose of the present study was to determine the cumulative risk of dislocation in these patients with fractures and to investigate if retentive cups decrease the risk of dislocation.
