Severe asthma is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, healthcare costs and impaired quality of life. Asthma is no longer considered as a single entity but as a heterogeneous disease with different clinical presentations (phenotypes) and variable underlying mechanistic biological pathways (endotypes). Two different endotypes are based on the inflammatory Type 2 T-helper response: T2-high and T2-low.

Plant cell wall remodeling plays a key role in the control of cell elongation and differentiation. In particular, fine-tuning of the degree of methylesterification of pectins was previously reported to control developmental processes as diverse as pollen germination, pollen tube elongation, emergence of primordia or elongation of dark-grown hypocotyls. However, how pectin degradation can modulate plant development has remained elusive.

Objective: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in children is common. Interest in sleep tests, such as polygraphy (PG), which can be performed in a non-attended setting, are gaining is increasing. PG has, however, been little studied in children with co-morbidities other than obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and in particular, if performed in a non-attended setting.

In legumes, phytoglobins (Phytogbs) are known to regulate nitric oxide (NO) during early phase of the nitrogen-fixing symbiosis and to buffer oxygen in functioning nodules. However, their expression profile and respective role in NO control at each stage of the symbiosis remain little-known. We first surveyed the Phytogb genes occurring in Medicago truncatula genome.

Over the past few decades, the heritage designation process has come to impact on the way of life of many nomadic pastoralists across the world. Since the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage was adopted in 1972, policies for the conservation of protected areas have been implemented under the aegis of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), especially in countries of the South, with a varying impact on the practices and perceptions of pastoral communities. Heritage policies were further extended by the establishment of the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage (the Convention was adopted by the UNESCO General Conference in October 2003 and came into force in 2006) and the list of Cultural Landscapes (adoption in 1992, with the first site listed in 1993).

Article Synopsis
  • Benzodiazepines may increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease, and managing menopause symptoms should not include systematic dosage or vitamin D substitution during the immediate post-menopausal period.
  • Topical placebos can be as effective as analgesics for knee osteoarthritis, while palliative chemotherapy does not enhance life quality at the end of life, and physicians tend to overly prescribe antibiotics for upper respiratory infections.
  • Restrictive blood transfusion thresholds pose no additional risk, and it's essential to conduct spirometry before starting long-term bronchodilator therapy; innovative solutions like telephone triage can reduce in-person consultations without raising costs.

The usual treatment of venous ulcers may be associated with statins intake. Antibiotics have only marginal utility in acute bronchitis. The prescription of paracetamol seems to have no benefit in the treatment of acute lower back pain.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a frequent chronic condition. It causes discomfort in the lower limbs with an urge to move the legs and sometimes paresthesias. It's frequently associated with sleep and mood disorders causing a significant impact on quality of life.

Background: Wheezing disorders in childhood vary widely in clinical presentation and disease course. During the last years, several ways to classify wheezing children into different disease phenotypes have been proposed and are increasingly used for clinical guidance, but validation of these hypothetical entities is difficult.

Methodology/principal Findings: The aim of this study was to develop a testable disease model which reflects the full spectrum of wheezing illness in preschool children.

Chronic cough is a common symptom in childhood and very often the expression of a cold like respiratory tract infection. Chronic cough may follow an acute cough lasting more than 4-8 weeks or may be the primary symptom of an underlying severe respiratory disease. It is important to find out the exact origin of chronic cough to allow accurate investigation steps and treatment.

Sleep related breathing disorders (SDB) in children has a major negative impact on their neurocognitive development and should be identified and treated early as to decrease morbidity. Children do not usually present daytime fatigue and sleepiness like adults, but rather show abnormal behavior patterns and learning disabilities. The presence of sustained nightime snoring is a good screening toll for SDB.

Intratubular atypical germ cells are quite frequent in seminiferous tubules of tumor-free tissue adjacent to germ cell tumors of the adult testis. Atypical germ cells are considered by several authors to be totipotent stem cells for different types of germ cell tumors. If this theory is correct, atypical germ cells should be demonrable in the vicinity of germ cell tumors of children as well.

The hydrolysis of Mg2+-adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) by heavy meromyosin has been studied between +20 and -15 degrees C, especially in the low-temperature range, in a medium containing 30% (v/v) ethylene glycol by fluorometric, spectrophotometric, and potentiometric measurements. The time course of the fluorescence changes of the enzyme during the reaction depends markedly on the temperature in consequence of large differences between the activation energies of the various steps. The observed kinetics have been analyzed according to the simplified scheme of Bagshaw & Trentham [Bagshaw, C.

A comparative study of the dissociation into subunits of Porcine alpha2 M, either native or bound to trypsin (Tn), has been carried out in order to determine the modifications of the alpha2 M structure due to the formation of the Tn-alpha2 M complex. Analytical ultra-centrifugation at pH 3.5 shows that the dissociation is smaller when alpha 2 M is bound to trypsin.
