Windthrow in riparian buffers affects the water quality of freshwater ecosystems in the eastern Canadian boreal forest.

Despite the wide application of riparian buffers in the managed boreal forest, their long-term effectiveness as freshwater protection tools remains unknown. Here, we evaluate windthrow incidence in riparian buffers in the eastern Canadian boreal forest and determine the effect of windthrow on the water quality index of the adjacent freshwater ecosystems. We studied 40 sites-20 riparian buffers, aged 10 to 20 years after harvesting and 20 control sites within intact riparian environments-distributed among clay and sandy (esker) soils and black spruce (Picea mariana) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana) stands.

Development of Trigger Films to Explore Nursing Students' Attitudes Toward Patients with Obesity.

Introduction: Given the increased prevalence of obesity and the existence of negative attitudes among health care providers toward patients with obesity (PWO), strategies are needed to assist nursing students in identifying and examining attitudes and beliefs related to the provision of care for individuals with obesity. Nursing school curricula should incorporate effective interventions for students in order to reduce stigmas and to modify negative attitudes and behaviors that interfere with quality nursing care for PWO. This article describes the process of developing and implementing an innovative bariatric sensitivity intervention (BSI) for prelicensure nursing students.

Role of endothelial cells in graft-versus-host disease.

To date, the only curative treatment for high-risk or refractory hematologic malignancies non-responsive to standard chemotherapy is allogeneic hematopoietic transplantation (allo-HCT). Acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a donor T cell-mediated immunological disorder that is frequently fatal and the leading cause of non-relapse mortality (NRM) in patients post allo-HCT. The pathogenesis of acute GVHD involves recognition of minor and/or major HLA mismatched host antigens by donor T cells followed by expansion, migration and finally end-organ damage due to combination of inflammatory cytokine secretion and direct cytotoxic effects.

Walking in two worlds with type 2 diabetes: a scoping review of prevention and management practices incorporating traditional indigenous approaches.

Type 2 diabetes is a complex chronic disease rapidly increasing among young people and disproportionately impacting Indigenous youth. Treatment programs are often inadequate for this population as they lack cultural relevance. A scoping review was conducted to explore traditional Indigenous approaches for diabetes prevention and management, to inform a program aimed at supporting Indigenous youth and families with type 2 diabetes.

Measuring sexual violence stigma in humanitarian contexts: assessment of scale psychometric properties and validity with female sexual violence survivors from Somalia and Syria.

Background: Valid measures of sexual violence stigma that can be readily incorporated into program monitoring and evaluation systems are needed to strengthen gender-based violence (GBV) services in humanitarian emergencies. This study sought to assess the psychometric properties, construct validity, and measurement invariance of sexual violence stigma scales among female Somali GBV survivors in Kenya and Syrian GBV survivors in Jordan to identify an abbreviated scale that could be used across humanitarian contexts.

Methods: We administered measures of sexual violence stigma to 209 female survivors of sexual violence aged 15 and older in Kenya and Jordan.

Analysis of cyanide using fluorogenic derivatization and capillary electrophoresis.

Samples containing cyanide were incubated at 85 °C in the presence of the fluorogenic reagent 3-(2-furoyl)quinoline-2-carboxaldehyde (FQ) and glutamic acid, and analyzed by capillary electrophoresis utilizing post-separation laser-induced fluorescence detection in a sheath flow cuvette. The separation time on a 25 cm long capillary at 800 Vcm was 3 min with the fluorescent product eluting at 107 s. Flushing of the capillary was not required between runs.

Modulating endothelial cells with EGFL7 to diminish aGVHD after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation in mice.

Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) is the second most common cause of death after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), underscoring the need for novel therapies. Based on previous work that endothelial cell dysfunction is present in aGVHD and that epidermal growth factor-like domain 7 (EGFL7) plays a significant role in decreasing inflammation by repressing endothelial cell activation and T-cell migration, we hypothesized that increasing EGFL7 levels after allo-HSCT will diminish the severity of aGVHD. Here, we show that treatment with recombinant EGFL7 (rEGFL7) in 2 different murine models of aGVHD decreases aGVHD severity and improves survival in recipient mice after allogeneic transplantation with respect to controls without affecting graft-versus-leukemia effect.

Cultural adaptation of a scalable psychological intervention for Burundian refugee adolescents in Tanzania: a qualitative study.

Background: There is an urgent need for evidence-based, scalable, psychological interventions to improve the mental health of adolescents affected by adversity in low-resource settings. Early Adolescents Skills for Emotions (EASE) was developed by the WHO as a brief, transdiagnostic, group intervention for early adolescents exhibiting internalising problems, delivered by trained and supervised lay providers. This study describes the cultural adaptation of EASE for Burundian adolescents living in Mtendeli refugee camps in Tanzania.

Improving mental health in low-resource settings: A feasibility randomized controlled trial of a transdiagnostic psychological intervention among Burundian refugee adolescents and their caregivers.

There is a paucity of evidence regarding interventions that can improve the mental health of adversity-affected young adolescents living in low-resource settings. We evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, relevance, and safety of the World Health Organization's Early Adolescent Skills for Emotions (EASE) intervention among Burundian refugee adolescents and their caregivers in Tanzania. This study consisted of a feasibility cluster randomized controlled trial (cRCT) and a process evaluation.

Persistence of Drug-Resistant Leukemic Stem Cells and Impaired NK Cell Immunity in CML Patients Depend on Antiproliferative and PP2A-Activating Functions.

Persistence of drug-resistant quiescent leukemic stem cells (LSC) and impaired natural killer (NK) cell immune response account for relapse of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Inactivation of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) is essential for CML-quiescent LSC survival and NK cell antitumor activity. For several years, it was believed that the thymus was entirely responsible for maintaining T cell homeostasis. Today, it is well-known that homeostatic peripheral mechanisms are essential in order to maintain T cell numbers and diversity constant in the periphery. Naïve and memory T cells require continual access to self-peptide MHC class I and II molecules and/or cytokines to survive in the periphery.

Background: We evaluated - an intervention that aimed to equip adolescent girls with the skills to make healthy, strategic life choices and to stay safe from sexual abuse using a cluster-randomized controlled trial with three arms: control, (GE), and GE+.

Methods: GE delivered a life skills curriculum to girls aged 13-14 in Liberia, facilitated by local female mentors. In the GE + variation, a cash incentive payment was offered to caregivers for girls' participation in the program.

MicroRNAs in graft-versus-host disease: a review of the latest data.

Detectable in biopsies and body fluids, the measurement of a single or panels of microRNAs have been reported to be quite sensitive and specific for the prediction, diagnosis, and prognosis of many diseases. Interest in the use of microRNAs as biomarkers and eventual therapeutic targets has increased exponentially in the last decade. However, in the field of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), the discovery of their involvement in biological processes and their predictive value is only emerging.

Background: Clinical practice for pre-licensure nurses in obstetrics widely varies and many sites do not consistently present opportunities to meet course objectives or manage complex obstetric nursing care. To address this problem at our institution, we designed a large-scale obstetric simulation using recommendations for best practice in simulation design criteria. We designed an unfolding, obstetric simulation that allowed students repeated opportunities for deliberate practice after micro-debriefing.

IL-7 Is the Limiting Homeostatic Factor that Constrains Homeostatic Proliferation of CD8 T Cells after Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation and Graft-versus-Host Disease.

Immune reconstitution after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation relies primarily on homeostatic proliferation (HP) of mature T lymphocytes, but this process is typically impaired during graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). We previously showed that low IL-7 levels combined with lack of dendritic cell (DC) regeneration constrain CD4 T cell HP during GVHD. However, it is not clear whether these alterations to the peripheral CD4 T cell niche also contribute to impair CD8 T cell regeneration during GVHD.

Double-Negative T Cell Levels Correlate with Chronic Graft-versus-Host Disease Severity.

Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) is a major complication, affecting 50% to 80% of long-term survivors of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Current cGVHD therapies are neither specific nor curative, and patients are typically maintained for several months to years under immunosuppressive regimens that are associated with important side effects and increased susceptibility to life-threatening infections. As a result, continued investigation into the pathology of the disease and the search for novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to treat cGVHD remains a high priority.

Imatinib mesylate (IM) therapy has been shown to induce lower T cell counts in chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) patients and an interference of IM with T cell receptor (TCR) signaling has been invoked to explain this observation. However, IL-7 and TCR signaling are both essential for lymphocyte survival. This study was undertaken to determine whether IM interferes with IL-7 or TCR signaling to explain lower T cell counts in patients.

Patient Care Handoff in the Postanesthesia Care Unit: A Quality Improvement Project.

Purpose: The goal of this project was to improve the process of transferring patient information between certified registered nurse anesthetists and postanesthesia care unit registered nurses using an evidence-based handoff checklist and evaluate completeness and accuracy of transferred information.

Design: A convenience sample of 14 certified registered nurse anesthetists and 7 registered nurses working at a single regional health system was recruited.

Methods: The Handoff Accuracy Scoring Tool was developed to include a pre-/postinterventional design to compare scores of verbal handoffs conducted in the preintervention phase without checklist (n = 20) and postintervention phase with checklist (n = 20).

For numerous patients, allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) is the only therapeutic option that could potentially cure their disease. Despite significant progress made in clinical management of allogeneic SCT, acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) remains the second cause of death after disease recurrence. aGVHD is highly immunosuppressive and the adverse effect of allogeneic SCT on T cell regeneration is typically more important than the levels of immunosuppression normally seen after autologous SCT.

Using Trigger Films as a Bariatric Sensitivity Intervention: Improving Nursing Students' Attitudes and Beliefs About Caring for Obese Patients.

Nurse educators are uniquely positioned to improve obesity-related attitudes and beliefs among prelicensure nursing students. A bariatric sensitivity intervention using 6 trigger films with facilitated debriefing was designed and delivered to 70 first-semester baccalaureate nursing students. Attitudes and beliefs significantly improved immediately after the intervention on 3 of the 5 attitude measures and on the belief measure.
