We evaluated the impact of a philanthropic program investing in the conservation of sites along the Pacific Americas Flyway, which spans >16,000 km of coastline and is used by millions of shorebirds. Using a quasi-experimental, mixed methods approach, we estimated what would have happened to shorebird populations at 17 wintering sites without the sustained and additional investment they received. We modeled shorebird populations across the entire flyway and at sites with and without investment.

Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) is a popular modality to create additional contrast in fluorescence images. By carefully analyzing pixel-based nanosecond lifetime patterns, FLIM allows studying complex molecular populations. At the single-molecule or single-particle level, however, image series often suffer from low signal intensities per pixel, rendering it difficult to quantitatively disentangle different lifetime species, such as during Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) analysis in the presence of a significant donor-only fraction.

Individual body condition is frequently used to explain differences in foraging and breeding ecology in seabirds. The Altiplano-Puna region is a high-altitude plateau in South America characterized by extreme conditions, including the highest UV incidence on Earth. The Laguna Negra is a hypersaline lake located in the Catamarca Province, northwestern Argentina, where stromatolites and other microbialites are found, and where life is mostly restricted to microbial mats. In this study, a particular microbial mat that covers the shore of the lake was explored, to unravel its layer-by-layer vertical structure in response to the environmental stressors therein.

Kidney biopsies are used sparingly to diagnose kidney injury in the clinic. Here we have conducted a small exploratory study to directly compare the low-grade kidney injury monitoring performance of serum safety biomarkers, novel urine safety biomarkers, microscopic histopathology and targeted gene expression alterations in kidney biopsy specimens in rhesus monkeys treated with tobramycin. Targeted gene expression increases were observed in the kidney biopsy samples and whole kidney sections for kidney injury molecule 1 (), clusterin (), osteopontin () messenger RNA transcripts.

Background: Hydrolysis of the fruit phenolic glucosides occurring during the oil extraction process is the main biochemical reaction affecting the biosynthesis and accumulation of secoiridoid compounds in virgin olive oil. An integrated approach at the molecular, biochemical, and metabolic level was used to study the olive β-glucosidase gene family in seven olive cultivars selected by their different phenolic profiles.

The Western Sandpiper, Calidris mauri, is one of the most abundant migratory shorebirds in the Western Hemisphere. Raster image correlation spectroscopy (RICS) is a fluorescence image analysis method for extracting the mobility, concentration, and stoichiometry of diffusing fluorescent molecules from confocal image stacks.
