Background: Periodontitis and coronary artery disease (CAD) share an inflammatory etiology; there is a recent concern regarding the investigation of an association between these two conditions. Current theories indicate that cytokines and proteins have an important role in this process. C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 are inflammatory derivatives produced in the presence of periodontitis and in the pathophysiology of coronary disease.

Objective: To identify the perception of medical students and physicians on the importance of vaccination and the risks of vaccine refusal.

Methods: Cross-sectional study with application of questionnaires about vaccines, vaccine refusal and its repercussions on public and individual health. A sample of 92 subjects was selected from a private medical school: group 1 (53 students from first to fourth grades) and group 2 (39 physicians).

According to the Brazilian Association of Organ Transplants, in 2015, 19,408 bone transplants were performed in Brazil, over 90% by Dental Surgeons. The surgical technique itself has a respectable number of reports regarding its clinical efficacy, as measured by long-term survival of dental implants in grafted areas. Uncertainty remains, however, as to whether fresh frozen grafts from human bone donors remain immunologically innocuous in the body of the host.

Introduction: Due the low mortality attributed to BPH, the evaluation of the impacts of LUTS on quality of life of the patients has great importance, especially on the concern of therapeutic choices, except on cases of formal surgery indication. This increase is directly related with difficulties to perform ordinary tasks and a normal living in community.

Objectives: Determinate an association among Diabetes mellitus II and BPH symptoms in a group of elder men.

Objective: To evaluate intraoperative graft patency and identify grafts under risk of early occlusion.

Methods: Fifty four patients were submitted to coronary artery bypass surgery and the graft flow was assessed by the Flowmeter (Medtronic Medistim), which utilizes the TTFM method. Three patients had left main disease and 48 had normal or mildly reduced left ventricular function.

Background: Ischemic preconditioning is a method that prepares and protects cells to tolerate a long period of ischemia with the least possible injury.

Objectives: Evaluate the influence of ischemic preconditioning over left ventricular function during off-pump myocardial revascularization.

Method: Forty patients with clinical indication for off-pump myocardial revascularization were randomized in two groups, with or without ischemic preconditioning.

Objective: Right ventricular failure during left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support can result in severe hemodynamic compromise with high mortality. This study investigated the acute effects of cavopulmonary anastomosis on right ventricular loading and LVAD performance in a model of severe biventricular failure.

Methods: LVAD support was performed by means of centrifugal pump implantation in 14 anesthetized dogs (20-30 kg) with severe biventricular failure obtained by ventricular fibrillation induction.

Background: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is a well-documented resuscitation method in patients with severe hemodynamic and/or respiratory impairment.

Objective: To describe several aspects related to the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in a pediatric heart center and determine its immediate and late outcomes.

Methods: Between October 2005 and January 2007, 10 patients who were submitted to pediatric cardiac surgery underwent extracorporeal membrane oxygenation implant.

The optimal management of patients with combined ischemic and/or valvular heart disease and abdominal aortic aneurysm is still a matter of debate. A 60-year-old woman presented with a large infra-renal aortic aneurysm. Preoperative workup revealed ischemic cardiomyopathy and aortic regurgitation.

Abstract Background: We describe our experience with the limited left thoracotomy strategy for reoperative coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)to the circumflex coronary artery system, emphasizing the indications, our particular operative technique, and early clinical follow-up. Methods: From January 2001 to January 2002, 8 consecutive patients underwent redo revascularization via limited left thoracotomy and without cardiopulmonary bypass. This operation was indicated for patients with recurrent myocardial ischemia confined to the lateral wall of the left ventricle, especially if a patent left internal thoracic artery (LITA)-to-left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD)graft was present.
