Piping plovers ( sp.) rank among North America's most endangered shorebird species, facing compounding environmental challenges that reduce habitat availability and suppress recruitment and survival rates. Despite these challenges, research on the direct effects of climate variability and extremes on their breeding ecology remains limited.

On September 24, 2022, Post-Tropical Hurricane Fiona made landfall in Atlantic Canada and caused unprecedented damages to the coastal communities and ecosystems therein. The aftermath triggered local government and communities in Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada to rethink current policies and practices for coastal protection in the context of climate change. This historic hazard represents the escalating frequency and intensity of extreme weather events that globally threaten coastal regions, accelerating coastal erosion and endangering communities.

Resisting immediate temptations in favor of larger later rewards predicts academic success, socioemotional competence, and health. These links with delaying gratification appear from early childhood and have been explained by cognitive and social factors that help override tendencies toward immediate gratification. However, some tendencies may actually promote delaying gratification.

Understanding and Supporting Inhibitory Control: Unique Contributions From Proactive Monitoring and Motoric Stopping to Children's Improvements With Practice.

Children struggle to stop inappropriate behaviors. What interventions improve inhibitory control, for whom, and why? Prior work suggested that practice proactively monitoring for relevant signals improved children's inhibitory control more than practice with motoric stopping. However, these processes were not clearly dissociated.

Why Does Cognitive Training Yield Inconsistent Benefits? A Meta-Analysis of Individual Differences in Baseline Cognitive Abilities and Training Outcomes.

Despite growing interest in improving cognitive abilities across the lifespan through training, the benefits of cognitive training are inconsistent. One powerful contributor may be that individuals arrive at interventions with different baseline levels of the cognitive skill being trained. Some evidence suggests poor performers benefit the most from cognitive training, showing compensation for their weak abilities, while other evidence suggests that high performers benefit most, experiencing a magnification of their abilities.

Developing adaptive control: Age-related differences in task choices and awareness of proactive and reactive control demands.

Developmental changes in executive function are often explained in terms of core cognitive processes and associated neural substrates. For example, younger children tend to engage control reactively in the moment as needed, whereas older children increasingly engage control proactively, in anticipation of needing it. Such developments may reflect increasing capacities for active maintenance dependent upon dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

Adaptive control and the avoidance of cognitive control demands across development.

Young adults adaptively coordinate their behavior to avoid demands placed on cognitive control. We investigated how this adaptive coordination develops by having 6-7- and 11-12-year-olds and young adults complete a demand selection task, in which participants could select between two tasks that varied in cognitive control demands via differences in rule switch frequency. Adults and older children exhibited significant preference for selecting the less demanding task, as well as a metacognitive signal guiding adaptive demand avoidance behavior across a variety of behavioral and self-report assessments.

Acute oesophageal necrosis, also known as black oesophagus, is a rare, and potentially lethal syndrome which is often diagnosed incidentally during upper endoscopy for evaluation of upper gastrointestinal bleed. It is characterised by diffuse circumferential black mucosal discolouration in the distal oesophagus secondary to necrosis that may extend proximally to involve variable length of the oesophagus. One theory of pathogenesis is that the relatively low perfusion state in the distal areas of the oesophagus makes it susceptible to mucosal injury.

Opposite effects of anxiety and depressive symptoms on executive function: the case of selecting among competing options.

People constantly face the need to choose one option from among many, such as when selecting words to express a thought. Selecting between many options can be difficult for anyone, and can feel overwhelming for individuals with elevated anxiety. The current study demonstrates that anxiety is associated with impaired selection across three different verbal tasks, and tests the specificity of this finding to anxiety.

Individual differences in emotion-cognition interactions: emotional valence interacts with serotonin transporter genotype to influence brain systems involved in emotional reactivity and cognitive control.

The serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) influences emotional reactivity and attentional bias toward or away from emotional stimuli, and has been implicated in psychopathological states, such as depression and anxiety disorder. The short allele is associated with increased reactivity and attention toward negatively-valenced emotional information, whereas the long allele is associated with increased reactivity and attention toward positively-valenced emotional information. The neural basis for individual differences in the ability to exert cognitive control over these bottom-up biases in emotional reactivity and attention is unknown, an issue investigated in the present study.

Obscure GI bleeding due to gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) diagnosed by capsule endoscopy.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a submucosal tumor which is most commonly found in the stomach and less commonly in small bowel. Small bowel GIST can be difficult to diagnose by conventional imaging and endoscopy techniques. We report a case of obscure GI bleeding due to a stromal tumor (GIST) of the jejunum diagnosed by video capsule endoscopy.

Sporadic colonic hamartomas in adults: a retrospective study.

Background: Colonic hamartomas are uncommon in adults. The aims of this study were to determine (1) the prevalence of colonic hamartomas in an adult population undergoing colonoscopy and (2) the clinical, endoscopic, and histologic features of colonic hamartomas in adult patients.

Methods: A pathology database identified 19 adult patients of 12,707 patients with colonic hamartomas in the 11-year study period from January 1992 to October 2002.

Effect of weight loss plans on body composition and diet duration.

Are low carbohydrate high protein (LCHP) diets more effective in promoting loss of weight and body fat and can individuals stay on an Atkins-like diet more easily than on a conventional weight loss diet? A pre-test/post-test randomized group design composed of three cohorts was utilized to test 1) a LCHP ketogenic diet; 2) the Zone diet; and 3) a conventional hypocaloric diabetic exchange diet that supplied < 10%, 40%, and 50% of calories from carbohydrate, respectively. Body composition was measured before and after the intervention treatment period with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Mean weight loss was 5.

Effect of concomitant antacid administration on plasma cimetidine concentrations during repetitive dosing.

Previous research has suggested that concurrent administration of antacid and cimetidine results in lower than expected plasma levels of cimetidine. Because these studies were all of single-dose design, this study was undertaken to determine the nature of the interaction after repeated administration of both drugs. There was no statistically significant difference demonstrated for any of the pharmacokinetic parameters evaluated in the study.

A series of regional roundtable discussions regarding the successful operation of Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P & T) Committees has been conducted by Hospital Formulary. Representatives from private hospitals; university and teaching hospitals, as well as Veterans Administration medical centers have participated to ensure that different aspects of P & T Committee performance are demonstrated. issues regarding committee profile, constituency, function, and mechanics are discussed, as are criteria for establishing a successful formulary within an institution.

Unstirred water layers in rabbit intestine: effects of pectin.

Pectins have been shown to affect the absorption of several different nutrients in clinical studies; however, the mechanisms for decreased absorption have not been defined. A possibility not studied with regards to pectin, but previously demonstrated to be important in absorption, is the effect of change in the unstirred water layer. As the unstirred water layer increases in thickness, the rate of absorption decreases for certain nutrients.

Effect of antacids on predicted steady-state cimetidine concentrations.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of antacids on predicted steady-state concentrations of cimetidine. Ten healthy volunteers received in random order one week apart, cimetidine and cimetidine and antacid suspension. Blood was obtained at specified times and analyzed for cimetidine.

Antibodies to herpes simplex type 1 in patients with active duodenal ulcer.

One hundred seventy-two patients requiring upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopy were examined prospectively for evidence of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection. No viruses were recovered from active ulcers (11 with duodenal and eight with gastric ulcers). Using both enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and standard complement fixation methods, patients with endoscopically proved active duodenal ulcer had significantly higher mean serum antibody levels to HSV-1 (but not to cytomegalovirus) than those without evidence of peptic ulcer.

Movies and dental perceptual-motor skills.

The burgeoning popularity of motion pictures in dental education, despite the absence of supporting data, presents the possibility that the medium is being used uncritically. Assumptions underlying the choice and production of dental films are enumerated and critiqued. The assumption that the typical dental procedure film provides a useful model of dental motions is seriously questioned.
