Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates survival trends in vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC) in Italy from 1990 to 2015, revealing stagnation in survival rates.
  • Analysis of data from 38 cancer registries indicated a decrease in 1-year and 2-year net survival rates, while 5-year conditional survival showed a slight increase but was not statistically significant.
  • The findings suggest that current treatment and control strategies for VSCC need to be re-evaluated in Italy and worldwide due to the lack of improvement in survival outcomes.

Background: The global increase in incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) occurring in the past decades has been partly attributed to increased diagnostic scrutiny of early lesions, with a potential phenomenon of overdiagnosis. The reported positive linear relation between skin biopsy rate and incidence of early CMM is compatible with this hypothesis.

Objectives: We explored the ecological association between the trends in annual dermatologic office visit rates, skin biopsy rates, incidence rates of in situ and invasive CMM by tumour thickness category, and CMM mortality rates in the Emilia-Romagna Region (northern Italy).

Skin often represents a target organ for adverse drug reactions and this also applies to the mRNA vaccines against Sars-CoV-2. Here we present a case of extensive livedoid reaction after 2nd dose of BNT162b-2 vaccine with massive blood skin extravasation and no systemic symptoms apart from anemization. The 30-year-old woman developed progressively enlarging livedoid lesions on limbs and abdomen.

Objective/background: Telepathology has been widely adopted to allow intraoperative pathology examinations to be performed remotely and for obtaining second opinion teleconsultation. In the Italian northern region of South Tyrol, the widespread geographical distances and consequent cost for the health system of having a travelling pathologist cover intraoperative consultations in peripheral hospitals was a key driver for the implementation of a telepathology system.

Methods: In 2010, four Menarini D-Sight whole slide scanners to digitize entire pathology slides were placed in the peripheral hospitals of Merano, Bressanone, Brunico, and in the hub hospital of Bolzano.

Background: The long-term increase in survival from cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) is generally attributed to the decreasing trend in tumour thickness, the single most important prognostic factor.

Objectives: To determine the relative contribution of decreased tumour thickness to the favourable trend in survival from CMM in Italy.

Methods: Eleven local cancer registries covering a population of 8 056 608 (13.

The incidence of thyroid disease is generally increasing, and it is subject to major geographic variability, between and within countries. Moreover, the incidence rates and the proportion of overdiagnosis for thyroid cancer in Italy are among the highest worldwide. This study aimed to estimate population-based frequency and trends of thyroidectomies in Italy by type of surgical procedure (total/partial), indication (tumors/other conditions), sex, age, and geographical region.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how breast cancer stage at diagnosis, patient age, and molecular tumor subtype affect survival rates among an Italian population.
  • Researchers analyzed data from nearly 8,831 women diagnosed with primary breast cancer between 2010 and 2012, categorizing them into three age groups and four molecular subtypes based on hormone receptor and HER2 status.
  • Findings indicated that older age groups and specific tumor subtypes, particularly triple-negative tumors and those with brain metastases, were associated with lower five-year survival rates.

Hepatoid tumors (HT) are rare neoplasms morphologically resembling hepatocellular carcinoma, which arise in several organs other than the liver. A comprehensive molecular profile of this group of neoplasms is still lacking. Genomic characterization of 19 HTs from different organs (three colon HTs, four esophagogastric HTs, four biliary HTs, six genitourinary HTs, two lung HTs) was performed using a multigene next-generation sequencing panel.

Sinonasal cancers (SNC) are rare tumours with predominant occupational aetiology associated with exposures to specific carcinogens. In Italy, SNC incidence has been under compulsory surveillance since 2008, through the National Sinonasal Cancer Registry (ReNaTuNS), a nationwide cancer registry coordinated by the National Institute for Insurance Against Accidents at Work (Inail). The ReNaTuNS has a regional structure with local registries, established at Regional Operating Centres (CORs).

In Oceania, North America and north-western Europe, after decades of increase, cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) rates began to stabilise or decline before 2000. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the reversal of the incidence trend is extending to southern Europe. To obtain a formal confirmation, this nationwide study from Italy investigated the incidence trends by birth cohort.
