Background: Age-related changes in body composition such as muscle loss can lead to sarcopenia, which is closely associated with frailty. However, the effect of body fat accumulation on frailty in old age remains unclear. In particular, the association between the combination of these two conditions, known as sarcopenic obesity, and frailty in older adults is unclear.

Background And Aims: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) presents a significant global health challenge, with myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI) being a major pathophysiological contributor and lacking effective interventions. While aerobic exercise training (AET) enhances cardiovascular health, its protective mechanism in MIRI remains elusive. This study aims to elucidate the protective effect of AET in MIRI and its underlying mechanism.

Objectives: Cognitive frailty, which is notably prevalent in nursing homes, correlates with a range of adverse health outcomes; however, interventions targeting this population are scarce, particularly those addressing activities of daily living (ADLs). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of virtual reality-based ADL rehabilitation training on older adults with cognitive frailty and ADL impairments.

Design: A 2-arm randomized controlled trial.

Adverse childhood experiences represent a critical public health concern that warrants urgent attention and cannot be overlooked. The evidence regarding the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and mortality has been insufficient and inconsistent. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the association between adverse childhood experiences, including their subtypes, and various mortality outcomes.

In this study, an alginate/PEG hydrogel was developed via a thiol-Michael addition reaction between oxidized quinone of catechols on dopamine-grafted sodium alginate (SA-DA) and sulfhydryl groups of 4-arm polyethylene glycol tetra-thiol (4-arm PEG-SH) under mildly basic conditions. Through the formation of thiol-terminated catechol groups, the accompanying oxidized catechols are reduced, significantly strengthening the internal network structure of the hydrogel and improving tissue adhesion. Meanwhile, the hydrogels have excellent self-healing properties due to the dynamic non-covalent bonds between the groups.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to systematically review and analyze the effectiveness of the ICOPE program in enhancing intrinsic capacity (IC) among older adults through randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
  • Results showed significant improvements in cognitive function and reductions in depressive symptoms with ICOPE, though it had little effect on locomotion.
  • The findings suggest that ICOPE could be a beneficial strategy in geriatric nursing, promoting healthier aging and addressing issues related to intrinsic capacity in older adults.

Background: Comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) is performed by a multidisciplinary team and includes systematic comprehensive team assessment and treatment. Comprehensive geriatric assessment has become a fundamental component of geriatric nursing, as a multidimensional approach is necessary to achieve the best diagnosis and therapy for older adults with frailty.

Objective: The aim of our review was to analyze the effects of comprehensive geriatric assessment interventions on older adults with frailty in hospital settings.

Background: Globally, there is an increase in the number of older people living with frailty, thus effective strategies to prevent and manage frailty are of paramount importance. The effects of nurse-led interventions on the physical and mental health of (pre) frail people have not yet been systematically reviewed.

Methods: We searched the PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library from inception to 8 May 2024.

Cancer cells subvert multiple properties of normal cells, including escaping strict cell cycle regulation, gaining resistance to cell death, and remodeling the tumor microenvironment. The hallmarks of cancer have recently been updated and summarized. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 1 (NFE2L1, also named NRF1) belongs to the cap'n'collar (CNC) basic-region leucine zipper (bZIP) family.

Aim: To pool existing studies to assess the overall effectiveness of integrated care for older adults (ICOPE)-based interventions in improving depressive symptoms in older adults.

Design: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Data Sources: Ten databases were systematically searched from inception to 15 July 2023 and the search was last updated on 2 September 2023.

Mineral transformations often induce microstructural deteriorations during temperature variations. Hence, it is crucial to understand why and how this microstructure weakens due to mineral alteration with temperature and the correlated physical and mechanical responses. Therefore, in this study, physical, chemical, thermal, petrographic, and mechanical analyses were carried out to comprehend better the thermal behaviors of Egyptian granodiorite exposed to temperatures as high as 800 °C.

Objective: The aims of this systematic review were to explore the pooled prevalence of multidimensional frailty assessed by the Tilburg Frailty Indicator among community-dwelling older adults.

Design: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Library, CINAHL and three Chinese databases.

Photodynamic therapy provides a promising solution for treating various cancer types. In this study, three distinct asymmetric porphyrin-cisplatin complex photosensitizers (ZnPt-P1, ZnPt-P2, and ZnPt-P3) were synthesized, each having unique side chains. Through a set of experiments involving singlet oxygen detection and density functional theory, ZnPt-P1 was demonstrated to have excellent efficacy, exceeding that of ZnPt-P2 and ZnPt-P3.

The ultrasonic cell disruption method was used to efficiently extract isothiocyanates and other volatile compounds from radish microgreens. A total of 51 volatiles were identified and quantified by headspace solid-phase micro-extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS) in four radish microgreen cultivars, mainly including alcohols, aldehydes, isothiocyanates, sulfides, ketones, esters, terpenes, and hydrocarbons. The correlation between cultivars and volatile compounds was determined by chemometrics analysis, including principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering heat maps.

Pancreatic cancer is characterized by its high malignancy, insidious onset and poor prognosis. Most patients with pancreatic cancer are usually diagnosed at advanced stage or with the distant metastasis due to the lack of an effective early screening method. Liquid biopsy technology is promising in studying the occurrence, progression, and early metastasis of pancreatic cancer.

The decalin skeleton is found in numerous bioactive molecules. The present study describes a multicomponent all-carbon cascade and sequential annulation involving benzoylacetonitrile derivatives and 2-arylidene-1,3-indanediones that yields highly functionalized decalin derivatives. The reaction strategy consisted of a consecutive Michael/Michael/tautomerization/Michael/Aldol annulation sequence and involved organic amine catalysts, mild conditions, and high stereoselectivity.

Article Synopsis
  • Social frailty among older adults has been linked to negative health outcomes, including increased mortality, disability, and cognitive decline.
  • The research involved a systematic review of 15 longitudinal studies, with meta-analysis showing a strong correlation between social frailty and higher mortality risk (HR = 2.27).
  • The findings highlight the importance of identifying and addressing social frailty in community-dwelling seniors to mitigate these adverse health effects.

Background: Brain lactate concentrations are enhanced in response to cerebral ischemia and promote the formation of reactive astrocytes, which are major components of the neuroinflammatory response and functional recovery, following cerebral ischemia. NDRG2 is upregulated during reactive astrocyte formation. However, its regulation and function are unclear.

Blast furnace slag (BFS) and fly ash (FA), as mining-associated solid wastes with good pozzolanic effects, can be combined with superplasticizer to prepare concrete with less cement utilization. Considering the important influence of strength on concrete design, random forest (RF) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) methods were combined to construct a prediction model and carry out hyper-parameter tuning in this study. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to reduce the dimension of input features.
