Background And Aims: Evidence on the link between sleep patterns and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in the community essentially relies on studies that investigated one single sleep pattern at one point in time. This study examined the joint effect of five sleep patterns at two time points with incident CVD events.

Methods: By combining the data from two prospective studies, the Paris Prospective Study III (Paris, France) and the CoLaus|PsyCoLaus study (Lausanne, Switzerland), a healthy sleep score (HSS, range 0-5) combining five sleep patterns (early chronotype, sleep duration of 7-8 h/day, never/rarely insomnia, no sleep apnoea, and no excessive daytime sleepiness) was calculated at baseline and follow-up.

Poor oral health has been linked to coronary heart disease (CHD). Clustering clinical oral conditions routinely recorded in adults may identify their CHD risk profile. Participants from the Paris Prospective Study 3 received, between 2008 and 2012, a baseline routine full-mouth clinical examination and an extensive physical examination and were thereafter followed up every 2 y until September 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the link between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and cardiovascular disease, focusing on vascular aging in high versus low-risk patients for OSA.
  • Two community-based studies (PPS3 and Maastricht Study) found that around 17-24% of participants were at high risk for OSA, as determined by the Berlin questionnaire.
  • Results showed that those at high risk had significantly greater carotid artery measurements indicating accelerated vascular aging, which may contribute to cardiovascular disease risk.

Objective: Impaired baroreflex function is an early indicator of cardiovascular autonomic imbalance. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) have decreased baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), however, whether the neural BRS (nBRS) and mechanical component of the BRS is altered in those with high metabolic risk (HMR, impaired fasting glucose and metabolic syndrome) or with overt T2D, is unknown. We examined this in a community-based observational study, the Paris Prospective Study III (PPS3).

Physical activity (PA) is a preventative behavior for noncommunicable disease. However, little consideration is given as to whether different domains of PA have differing associations with health outcomes. We sought to determine the association between occupational, sport, leisure, and total PA with baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), distinguishing between neural (nBRS) and mechanical (mBRS) BRS.

Objective: The aim was to investigate the potential association between hearing impairment and incident depressive symptoms.

Methods: Using a prospective community-based cohort study in France (the Paris Prospective Study III), participants aged 50-75 years were recruited between 2008 and 2012 and thereafter followed up every 2 years up to 2018. Hearing impairment, measured at study recruitment by audiometry testing, was defined as a pure tone average >25 decibels in the better ear.

Background And Aims: To study the association between chewing capacity-a prerequisite for eating- and the level of cardiovascular health (CVH).

Methods: This is a cross-sectional analysis conducted on 5430 study participants from the Paris Prospective Study 3 that were subjected to an oral examination by trained dentists at study recruitment between 2008 and 2012. Chewing capacity was determined by the number of functional tooth units (FTUs), and ≥ 5FTUs defined adequate chewing capacity.

Large artery stiffness is an index of vascular aging associated with cardiovascular mortality. Whereas traditional risk factors for arterial stiffness are known, the contribution of socioeconomic factors is less reported. We sought to determine the relationship between arterial stiffness and socioeconomic deprivation (at the individual and neighborhood levels) in healthy males and females.

Insomnia symptoms are highly prevalent and associated with several adverse medical conditions, but only few determinants, including non-modifiable ones, have been highlighted. We investigated associations between body silhouette trajectories over the lifespan and insomnia symptoms in adulthood. From a community-based study, 7 496 men and women aged 50-75 years recalled their body silhouette at age 8, 15, 25, 35 and 45, and rated the frequency of insomnia symptoms on a standardized sleep questionnaire.

Background: Arterial stiffness may contribute to late-life depression via cerebral microvascular damage, but evidence is scarce. No longitudinal study has evaluated the association between arterial stiffness and risk of depressive symptoms. Therefore, we investigated the association between carotid artery stiffness and incident depressive symptoms in a large community-based cohort study.

Vascular aging is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease and can be quantified by higher carotid stiffness, intima-media thickness and diameter, and hypertension. Weight gain across the lifetime may be an important, modifiable determinant of vascular aging. We therefore aimed to assess lifetime body silhouette trajectories (a marker of weight change across the lifespan) in relation to vascular aging in late adulthood.

Purpose: To describe fecundity in female survivors of childhood cancer and consider the correlation with quality of life (QOL).

Materials And Methods: Of 1744 women treated for childhood cancer before the age of 15 years at one of eight French cancer treatment centers between 1948 and 1992, 1187 who were alive in 2005 were sent a self-administered questionnaire, including questions about health status, QOL (MOS SF-36), and fecundity. A standardized fecundity ratio (SFR) was calculated (SFR: observed/expected number of children) for each individual based on a national reference.

Objectives: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a common sleep complaint in the population and is increasingly recognised as deleterious for health. Simple and sensitive tools allowing identifying individuals at greater risk of EDS would be of public health importance. Hence, we determined trajectories of body silhouette from early childhood to adulthood and evaluated their association with EDS in adulthood.

Aims: People with exaggerated exercise blood pressure (BP) have adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Mechanisms are unknown but could be explained through impaired neural baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and/or large artery stiffness. This study aimed to determine the associations of carotid BRS and carotid stiffness with exaggerated exercise BP.

Article Synopsis
  • A study looked at how childhood cancer survivors face challenges when trying to get insurance for loans or mortgages.
  • Out of 1,920 survivors, about 10% had problems getting small loans and over 30% had trouble with home loans, especially if they had to share their cancer history.
  • A new law in France helps survivors by not requiring them to disclose their cancer after a certain number of years, which should make things easier for them financially.

Objective: We hypothesized that subclinical markers of vascular structure and function, which are independent predictors of cardiovascular disease, would be less frequent in subjects with ideal than poor cardiovascular health (CVH) as defined by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Approach And Results: Carotid parameters were measured using high-precision echotracking device in 9155 nonreferred participants attending a health checkup in a large health center in Paris (France) between 2008 and 2012. According to the AHA, participants with 0 to 2, 3 to 4, and 5 to 7 metrics (smoking, physical activity, body mass index, diet, blood glucose and total cholesterol, blood pressure) at the ideal level were categorized as having poor, intermediate, and ideal CVH.
