Introduction: Occurrence of hemorrhagic cyst inside ligamentum flavum is a very rare phenomenon and presents with back pain, radiculopathy, or neurogenic claudication. Various causes reported in the literature are trauma, anticoagulant therapy, and increased micromotion in the setting of unstable and degenerated motion segment.

Case Report: We report a case of 41-year-old male patient who presented with claudication pain in both lower limbs for the past 6 months associated with bilateral calf atrophy.

Indirect and direct contributions of executive functions to reading comprehension.

In the current study, we investigated the role of executive functions in explaining how word recognition and language comprehension jointly predict reading comprehension in multilingual and monolingual students (Grades 1 and 2). Specifically, mediation and moderation models were tested and compared to offer a more nuanced understanding of the role of executive functions in reading comprehension. The results provided support for the mediation model in which executive functions indirectly contribute to reading comprehension via word recognition and language comprehension in both language groups.

Unilateral Neurological Deficit Due to Spinal Epidural Hematoma Following Midline-Sparing Spine Surgery: A Case Report.

Symptomatic spinal epidural hematoma (SEH) is a rare but well-documented complication in spine surgery, often associated with risk factors such as abnormal coagulation parameters, low platelets, excessive epidural bleeding, and inadequate hemostasis. While bilateral SEH is frequently described in the literature, unilateral SEH following spine surgery is seldom reported. We present a unique case of a unilateral neurological deficit resulting from an SEH following midline-sparing spine surgery due to unilateral drain placement in an 80-year-old male patient without comorbidities and normal coagulation parameters.

Quality of care for postpartum hemorrhage: A direct observation study in referral hospitals in Kenya.

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of maternal mortality in Kenya. The aim of this study was to measure quality and timeliness of care for PPH in a sample of deliveries in referral hospitals in Kenya. We conducted direct observations of 907 vaginal deliveries in three Kenyan hospitals from October 2018 through February 2019, observing the care women received from admission for labor and delivery through hospital discharge.

Paradoxical attenuation of neuroinflammatory response upon LPS challenge in miR-146b deficient mice.

The miR-146 family consists of two microRNAs (miRNAs), miR-146a and miR-146b (miR-146a/b), both of which are known to suppress immune responses in a variety of conditions. Here, we studied how constitutive deficiency of miR-146b () affects lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced neuroinflammation in mice. Our experiments demonstrated that miR-146b deficiency results in the attenuation of LPS-induced neuroinflammation, as it was evidenced by the reduction of sickness behavior, a decrease in the inflammatory status of microglia, and the loss of morphological signs of microglial activation in the hippocampus.

Impact of the introduction of a low-cost uterine balloon tamponade (ESM-UBT) device for managing severe postpartum hemorrhage in India: A comparative before-and-after study.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of introducing a uterine balloon tamponade (ESM-UBT) device for managing severe postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), mainly due to uterine atony, in health facilities in India on the rates of PPH-related maternal death and invasive procedures for PPH control.

Methods: We used a quasi-experimental, difference-in-difference (DID) design to compare changes in the rates of a composite outcome (PPH-related maternal death and/or artery ligation, uterine compression sutures, or hysterectomy) among women delivering in nine intervention facilities compared with those delivering in two control facilities, before and after the introduction of ESM-UBT.

Results: The study sample included 214 123 deliveries (n = 78 509 before ESM-UBT introduction; n = 47 211 during ESM-UBT introduction; and n = 88 403 after ESM-UBT introduction).
