Article Synopsis
  • Male infertility accounts for about 40% of infertility cases, with High Sperm DNA Fragmentation (SDF) being a significant contributor, affecting natural conception and assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes.
  • SDF is mainly caused by factors such as apoptosis, protamination failure, and excessive reactive oxygen species, highlighting the limitations of traditional infertility tests for men with normal sperm counts.
  • Various testing and treatment strategies have been developed over the last 25 years to diagnose and reduce DNA fragmentation, aiming to improve sperm quality and enhance success rates in assisted reproduction.

Design: This was an analytical 'case-control' study.

Case/control Selection: Patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), that is either ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, were selected from the Medical Hospital of University of Turin and were referred as cases. Equal number of patients, not having IBD, were selected from the Dental school of the same University and called as controls.

Data Sources: A comprehensive search strategy was planned a priori and accordingly three electronic databases including Medline, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL with no language and time restrictions were searched for finding the relevant literature. Hand searching of the relevant articles was also done to retrieve other possible studies.

Study Selection: Both parallel and split-mouth RCTs with a minimum follow-up period of 2 years were included.

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the access to preventive dental care and oral health among children with additional educational support needs as compared to normal children in primary education years.

Design: This was a population-based record-linkage study, where the data was retrieved from six different national databases.

Cohort Selection: Children born in Scotland between years 2011 and 2014 and entered elementary school education in years 2016-19 were included and the corresponding information about their additional educational support needs (ASNs) was determined using a Pupil Census database.

Background/aim: Due to its frequency, early occurrence, and severe adverse effects, if untreated, traumatic dental injury (TDI) is a public dental health issue. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dental injuries caused by trauma in the anterior teeth among schoolchildren of Yamunanagar (Haryana), Northern India.

Materials And Methods: A sample of 11,897 schoolchildren in the age-group of 8-12 years from 36 urban/rural schools was examined for TDI using Ellis and Davey classification.

Over the years, laboratories performing assisted reproductive technologies have been tasked with a growing number of procedures of increased complexity. New technologies, including hardware and software innovations, are constantly evolving, and evaluated as potential tools to improve laboratory and clinical outcomes. The assisted reproductive technology (ART) laboratory plays a crucial role in fertility treatments and, therefore, it is often under intense scrutiny with regards to performance and success rates.

Article Synopsis
  • Advances in assisted reproduction techniques have increased the importance of assessing gametes and embryos to improve ART treatment outcomes.
  • The quality of embryos largely depends on the maturity of oocytes and culture conditions, with mature oocytes having higher fertilization rates.
  • Various grading systems and innovative methods (like preimplantation genetic testing and morphokinetics) help identify embryos with the best implantation potential, allowing for more efficient embryo transfer.

Oocyte retrieval, oocyte denudation, and embryo transfer are crucial processes during assisted reproduction technology (ART). Air quality in the ART laboratory, temperature, pH of the media used and the time interval between oocyte retrieval and insemination are all critical factors. Anesthesia is required for oocyte retrieval, however, evidence regarding the potential impact of different methods (general anesthesia, conscious sedation, and local anesthesia) on the clinical outcomes is unclear.

The assisted reproductive technology (ART) laboratory is a complex system designed to sustain the fertilization, survival, and culture of the preimplantation embryo to the blastocyst stage. ART outcomes depend on numerous factors, among which are the equipment, supplies and culture media used. The number and type of incubators also may affect ART results.

COVID-19 was first reported in China, in November 2019 and since then the spread of this disease was so rapid that on March 11, 2020, it was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization. Due to the high transmissibility of the COVID virus and the associated morbidity and mortality, various International and National health authorities released different guidelines for day-to-day living, laying down "new norms" which has impacted our lives enormously. Although these guidelines seem to be convoluted but owing to some differences in the guidelines, it raises an ambiguity in the minds of dentists.

Design This is a parallel-group, unicentric, randomised, assessor-blinded, superiority trial with equal allocation ratio to evaluate and compare the effects of periodontal treatment on endothelial function, measured by a flow-mediated dilation of brachial artery, in patients with a recent ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).Study population The study population included a total of 48 patients who were recruited from a hospital in Brazil. Patients who had a recent episode of acute STEMI and also exhibited severe periodontal disease were included, while exclusion criteria included factors like patients who were <30 years old, HIV-positive, had chronic inflammatory or neoplastic diseases, pregnant, significant dental loss (<8 teeth remaining) etc.
