Disorder and Halide Distributions in Cesium Lead Halide Nanocrystals as Seen by Colloidal Cs Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.

Colloidal nuclear magnetic resonance (cNMR) spectroscopy on inorganic cesium lead halide nanocrystals (CsPbX NCs) is found to serve for noninvasive characterization and quantification of disorder within these structurally soft and labile particles. In particular, we show that Cs cNMR is highly responsive to size variations from 3 to 11 nm or to altering the capping ligands on the surfaces of CsPbX NCs. Distinct Cs signals are attributed to the surface and core NC regions.

Colloidal CsPbX Nanocrystals with Thin Metal Oxide Gel Coatings.

Lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanocrystals (NCs) have gathered much attention as light-emitting materials, particularly owing to their excellent color purity, band gap tunability, high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), low cost, and scalable synthesis. To enhance the stability of LHP NCs, bulky strongly bound organic ligands are commonly employed, which counteract the extraction of charge carriers from the NCs and hinder their use as photoconductive materials and photocatalysts. Replacing these ligands with a thin coating is a complex challenge due to the highly dynamic ionic lattice, which is vulnerable to the commonly employed coating precursors and solvents.

Molecular effects of the consumption of margarine and butter varying in trans fat composition: a parallel human intervention study.

Background: Whereas the dietary intake of industrial trans fatty acids (iTFA) has been specifically associated with inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes, understanding the impact of dietary fats on human health remains challenging owing to their complex composition and individual effects of their lipid components on metabolism. The aim of this study is to profile the composition of blood, measured by the fatty acid (FAs) profile and untargeted metabolome of serum and the transcriptome of blood cells, in order to identify molecular signatures that discriminate dietary fat intakes.

Methods: In a parallel study, the molecular effects of consuming dairy fat containing ruminant TFA (rTFA) or margarine containing iTFA were investigated.

Influence of a raised slatted area in front of the nest on leg health, mating behaviour and floor eggs in broiler breeders.

European farms for broiler breeders often have raised slatted areas in front of the nests, but in other regions of the world no raised slatted areas are provided. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a raised slatted area on leg health, mating behaviour and floor laying behaviour. Ten groups of 33 broiler breeder hens and three males were housed in two pen types: with or without a raised slatted area in front of the nests.

Mass spectrometry data of and pig digestion of skim milk powder.

The data in this article are related to the research article entitled "Physiological comparability of the harmonized INFOGEST digestion method to pig digestion" (Egger et al., 2012). In this article, proteins identified in the different sections of pig skim milk powder (SMP) digestion are presented.

Colloidal CsPbX (X = Cl, Br, I) Nanocrystals 2.0: Zwitterionic Capping Ligands for Improved Durability and Stability.

Colloidal lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have recently emerged as versatile photonic sources. Their processing and optoelectronic applications are hampered by the loss of colloidal stability and structural integrity due to the facile desorption of surface capping molecules during isolation and purification. To address this issue, herein, we propose a new ligand capping strategy utilizing common and inexpensive long-chain zwitterionic molecules such as 3-(,-dimethyloctadecylammonio)propanesulfonate, resulting in much improved chemical durability.

Physiological comparability of the harmonized INFOGEST in vitro digestion method to in vivo pig digestion.

Recently, a static in vitro digestion (IVD) protocol was published by Minekus and coworkers (Minekus et al., 2014) within the COST INFOGEST network. The protocol, concentrating on physiological enzyme activities had the main goal to improve the comparability of experimental data between labs.

Limited Associations between Keel Bone Damage and Bone Properties Measured with Computer Tomography, Three-Point Bending Test, and Analysis of Minerals in Swiss Laying Hens.

Keel bone damage is a wide-spread welfare problem in laying hens. It is unclear so far whether bone quality relates to keel bone damage. The goal of the present study was to detect possible associations between keel bone damage and bone properties of intact and damaged keel bones and of tibias in end-of-lay hens raised in loose housing systems.

Tolerance to 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D glycosides from Solanum glaucophyllum by the growing pig.

Solanum glaucophyllum leaves contain high levels of glycosidically bound 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D, the most important vitamin D metabolite. The tolerance to this source was evaluated during six weeks with fifty weaned pigs fed increasing levels (0, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20μg 1,25(OH)D/kg diet).

Effects of benzoic Acid and dietary calcium:phosphorus ratio on performance and mineral metabolism of weanling pigs.

In a 2×2 factorial experiment the hypotheses tested were that the metabolic acid load caused by benzoic acid (BA) added to the feed affects bone mineralization of weanling pigs, and that a wide dietary calcium (Ca) to phosphorus (P) ratio in phytase-supplemented feeds with a marginal P concentration has a positive effect on bone mineralization. The four experimental diets, which contained 0.4% P and were supplemented with 1,000 FTU phytase/kg, contained either 5 g BA/kg or no BA and either 0.

Determination of Vitamin B12 in meat products by RP-HPLC after enrichment and purification on an immunoaffinity column.

A quantitative method for the determination of Vitamin B12 in meat products by RP-HPLC and UV detection was developed and compared to the reference method (microbiological assay, MBA). Vitamin B12 was extracted with 50mM sodium acetate buffer in the presence of sodium cyanide. For the quantification of total Vitamin B12, it was necessary to release protein-bound Vitamin B12 by pepsin treatment.

[Melanoma: a new therapeutic era].

Melanoma is the cancer with the fastest incidence increase in Switzerland. 30% of the cases arise before the age of 50 years. Once metastatic, the median survival under current systemic therapies is about 8 months, with less than 5% of patients alive at 5 years.

Memory and effector CD8 T-cell responses after nanoparticle vaccination of melanoma patients.

Induction of cytotoxic CD8 T-cell responses is enhanced by the exclusive presentation of antigen through dendritic cells, and by innate stimuli, such as toll-like receptor ligands. On the basis of these 2 principles, we designed a vaccine against melanoma. Specifically, we linked the melanoma-specific Melan-A/Mart-1 peptide to virus-like nanoparticles loaded with A-type CpG, a ligand for toll-like receptor 9.

Effect of fat score on the quality of various meat products.

In the larger Swiss abattoirs the fat score (FS) is determined by default as an indicator of fat quality. The FS refers to the iodine number and is related to the degree of unsaturation of the outer layer of backfat. In a feeding trial with Large White gilts, the FS was determined in 47 carcasses.

Sentinel lymph node involvement and a high Breslow index are independent factors of risk for early relapse of melanoma.

Aim: The clinical relevance of sentinel lymph node (SLN) analysis was evaluated prospectively and compared with other known risk factors of relapse in early stage melanoma.

Methods: Surgery was guided by lymphoscintigraphy, blue dye and gamma probe detection. SLN were analysed by haematoxylin eosin (HE) histochemistry and multimarker immunohistochemistry (IHC).

Case Report: A 14-year-old boy developed fever, a diffuse pustular rash and a respiratory distress. Chest X-rays and serology were consistent with an acute Chlamydia pneumoniae infection.

Skin markers of occult spinal dysraphism in children: a review of 54 cases.

Objectives: To verify the diagnostic value of lumbosacral midline cutaneous lesions in asymptomatic children to detect occult spinal dysraphism (OSD) and to propose a practical approach for clinical investigations with respect to the type of cutaneous lesions observed.

Design: Retrospective study of 54 children referred to the Department of Pediatric Dermatology between 1990 and 1999 for congenital midline lumbosacral cutaneous lesions.

Setting: The private or institutional practices of participating dermatologists and pediatricians.

Detection of micrometastases in sentinel lymph nodes from melanoma patients: direct comparison of multimarker molecular and immunopathological methods.

The technique of sentinel lymph node (SLN) dissection is a reliable predictor of metastatic disease in the lymphatic basin draining the primary melanoma. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is emerging as a highly sensitive technique to detect micrometastases in SLNs, but its specificity has been questioned. A prospective SLN study in melanoma patients was undertaken to compare in detail immunopathological versus molecular detection methods.

Validation of segmentation techniques for digital dermoscopy.

Purpose: This study aims at evaluating two automatic contour detection techniques especially developed for dermoscopic images.

Methods: Twenty-five images of lesions with a fuzzy boundary have been randomly selected. Five dermatologists experienced in dermoscopy have manually drawn the border of all the lesions and repeated the procedure after two and four weeks.

Quantitative LC/MS-MS determination of sulfonamides and some other antibiotics in honey.

A simple and rapid method was developed for the determination of 20 antibiotics (sulfonamides, tetacyclines, and flumequine) in honey by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The proposed method is sensitive (limit of detection 0.5 to 10 ppb for the various antibiotics) and selective.
