Endobronchial cryobiopsy or forceps biopsy for lung cancer diagnosis.

Background: Invasive procedures such as bronchoscopic biopsy, bronchial washing, and bronchial brushing are widely used in diagnosis of lung cancers. The mean diagnostic rate with bronchoscopic forceps biopsy is 74% in central tumors. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of cryobiopsies in histopathological diagnosis.

Macroprolactinemia, like hyperprolactinemia, may promote platelet activation.

Insulin resistance, which provides a convenient milieu for platelet activation, has been closely associated with atherosclerotic disorders. Although it often accompanies hyperprolactinemia, findings conflict concerning its clinical impact in macroprolactinemia. In order to investigate the relationship between hyperprolactinemia and platelet activation evidenced by ADP-stimulated P-selectin expression on flow cytometry, we studied hyperprolactinemic, macroprolactinemic, and normoprolactinemic subjects.

Iniencephaly with mediastinal bronchogenic cyst: A case report.

Objective: Iniencephaly is a rare neural tube defectwith consisting of a defect in the occipital bone,spina bifida of many vertebrae, and retroflexion of the head on the spine. In majorty of cases it is a le-\thal condition.

Methods: We present the first case of iniencephalywith large bronchogenic cyst diagnosed prenatally.

Newly diagnosed hyperglycemia and stress hyperglycemia in a coronary intensive care unit.

Aims: To determine prevalence of newly diagnosed hyperglycemia (NDH) among patients with acute coronary disease, inquire relationship of stress hyperglycemia (SH) with functional outcomes.

Methods: Admission (APG) and first morning fasting plasma glucose (FPG) measurements were obtained, capillary glucose measurements (CGM) every 6-h within first day were performed-Group 1: Normoglycemics. Group 2: NDH cases: No known diabetes, APG>200mg/dl and/or FPG>126 and/or any of CGM>200.

The expression of GST isoenzymes and p53 in non-small cell lung cancer.

This study investigated the immunohistochemical staining characteristics of glutathione-S-transferase alpha, pi, mu, theta and p53 in non-small cell lung carcinoma and normal lung tissue from 50 patients. The relationships between expressions of the Glutathione-S-transferase isoenzymes and some clinicopathological features were also examined. Expression of glutathione-S-transferase pi, mu, alpha, theta and p53 was assessed by immunohistochemistry for primary lung carcinomas of 50 patients from the Sanitarium Education and Research Hospital, Ankara lung cancer collection.

A rare extramedullary involvement in myeloma: lung parenchyma and association with unfavorable chromosomal abnormalities.

Although pulmonary complications developing secondary to lung infections and involvement in ribs occur frequently in multiple myeloma (MM), involvement of the lung parenchyma is quite rare. In clinical studies, the involvement of lung parenchyma has been found to be associated with unfavorable prognosis. Here, a MM case in whom involvement of lung parenchyma was accompanied by unfavorable prognostic cytogenetic markers is presented.

Primary mediastinal haemangiopericytoma--an unusual cause of massive haemoptysis in a young woman.

We report a case of primary mediastinal haemangiopericytoma in a 29-year-old female patient who presented with haemoptysis, cough and dyspnea. Computed tomography showed a 9 x 6 x 5 cm mass in the left posterior mediastinum. Bronchoscopic examination failed to obtain biopsy because of massive bleeding.

MEFV gene mutations and its impact on the clinical course in ulcerative colitis patients.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory disease of the colonic mucosa. The presence of gene responsible for FMF, MEFV, which frequently causes inflammation, may aggravate the clinical course of UC. We aimed to determine the prevalence of MEFV mutations in UC patients and its impact on the clinical course.

Benign and Malignant Mesothelial Proliferation.

Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a rare primary malignant tumor of the surface serosal cells. The diagnosis of MM is challenging with a broad differential diagnosis. For many decades, studies have focused on distinguishing MM from other types of cancer; however, benign mesothelial cell hyperplasia, especially in small biopsies, has emerged as a major problem.

Ectopic primary B cell lymphoma of the thyroid presenting as an anterior mediastinal mass. A case report.

Ectopic thyroid tumours arising in the mediastinum without connection to the cervical thyroid gland are very rare. Follicular adenoma, papillary carcinoma and follicular carcinoma in the mediastinum has been reported, but primary ectopic thyroid B cell lymphoma has not been reported previously. We report mediastinal primary ectopic thyroid large B cell lymphoma in an 80-year-old man.

Effects of rosiglitazone on bone mineral density and remodelling parameters in Postmenopausal diabetic women: a 2-year follow-up study.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of rosiglitazone on bone metabolism and bone density.

Design: An open-label, randomized, controlled trial of 24-month duration. Patients and measurements Obese, postmenopausal women with newly diagnosed diabetes were studied.

Cytopathologic differential diagnosis of small cell carcinoma and poorly differentiated non-small cell carcinoma in bronchial lavage specimens using a regression analysis.

The aim of this study was to determine the most significant cytologic features to differentiate small cell carcinoma (SCC) from poorly differentiated non-small cell carcinoma (NSCC) in bronchial lavage specimens. Bronchial lavage specimens from 35 SCC cases and 63 poorly differentiated NSCC cases were examined and the cytologic parameters reviewed retrospectively. Thirty-five cytologic features considered useful in differential diagnosis were assessed.

Health-related quality of life and its associations with mood condition in familial Mediterranean fever patients.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and mood conditions in familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) patients. Ninety FMF patients (F/M 60/30, median age 29) and 67 control subjects (F/M 46/21, median age 30) were included in this study. HRQOL was assessed with short form-36 (SF-36) and mood conditions were assessed with hospital anxiety depression scale (HADS).

A rare clinic presentation of abdominal pain: rupture of splenic artery aneurysm: a case report.

Background: Splenic artery aneurysms (SAA) are uncommon but the most common visceral artery aneurysm. Splenic artery aneurysms are important to recognize because up to 25% may be complicated by rupture and the mortality rate after rupture is between 25% and 70%.

Case Report: We present a patient who have abdominal pain.

Abdominal pain may dominate the scene of idiopathic aortitis.

A 59-year-old man suffering from abdominal pain and having high acute phase reactants was admitted to hospital. Aortitis was discovered incidentally with magnetic resonance that was performed for another prediagnosis. Steroid and azathioprine combination was unsuccessful for remission and preventing relapses.

Clinicopathologic features and prognostic significance of lung tumours with mixed histologic patterns.

Lung tumours with a mixed histologic pattern are rare. We evaluated the clinicopathologic features and prognosis of lung tumours with mixed histology and compared them with the tumours which have single histology. The study group consisted of 39 patients with a mixed histologic pattern and a control group consisted of 41 patients with a single histology on the consecutive surgical specimens.

49,XXXXY syndrome with autoimmune diabetes and ocular manifestations.

Objective: We report a rare case of 49,XXXXY syndrome with autoimmune diabetes (requiring insulin therapy), bilateral cataracts and unilateral glaucoma.

Clinical Presentation And Intervention: A 25-year-old man with mental retardation presented with multiple skeletal abnormalities, polyuria and polydipsia. He had high glucose concentrations, without ketonuria, and hypergonadotropic hypogonadism.

Spindle cell sarcomatoid carcinoma: first case reported in the trachea.

A 78-years-old man presented with weight loss, dyspnea, cough and hemoptysis. He was an ex-smoker with a smoking history of 30 pack-years. Imaging studies revealed an endoluminal carinal mass and a tumoral mass arising from the posterior wall of the trachea was observed bronchoscopically.

Evaluation of intra-articular collagenase, TIMP-1, and TNF-alpha levels before and after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Objectives: We investigated intra-articular levels of collagenase, which presumably promotes bone-tendon healing, and collagenase mediators involved in its production (tumor necrosis factor-alpha, TNF-alpha) and inhibition (TIMP-1 enzyme) in patients following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.

Methods: The study included 16 patients (15 males, 1 female; mean age 27 years; range 17 to 40 years) who underwent arthrocentesis due to effusion that developed following reconstruction of isolated ACL injuries. Intra-articular levels of collagenase, TNF-alpha, and TIMP-1 were measured using appropriate activity assay and immunoassay kits in synovial fluid samples obtained intraoperatively and during arthrocentesis.

Quantification of the radiographic joint space width of the ankle.

Quantification of joint space width of the ankle could provide information essential to evaluate the effects of potential disease-modifying agents and adverse effects of devices intended to ameliorate osteoarthritis elsewhere in the lower extremity. Current methods require proprietary software or have not been well validated; our purpose was to develop and assess the reliability of a digital joint space width quantification method using public access software. We studied 95 patients, asymptomatic in the ankles and without history of ankle trauma, but with symptomatic medial knee osteoarthritis, participating in an ongoing longitudinal trial.

Mediastinal composite hemangioendothelioma. A rare tumor at an unusual location.

Composite hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular tumor; only 12 cases have been previously described in the extremities, tongue and axilla. We report the first case of composite hemangioendothelioma of the mediastinum in a 50-year-old woman. She was admitted to our hospital with dyspnea and cough lasting for two months.

[Principles for the treatment of cardiac injuries: a twenty-two year experience].

Background: Penetrating cardiac injuries have a rather high mortality and require a rapid diagnosis and emergency surgical intervention. The aim of this study was to present and discuss our experience with penetrating heart wounds.

Methods: Sixteen patients with penetrating cardiac injury underwent surgical treatment at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery between 1985-2007.
