Increasing frequency of therapy by software-based treatment of naming ability in people with aphasia: a preliminary study.

This study aimed to explore the effect of new software targeting naming deficits in Turkish-speaking people with aphasia. The study included seven Turkish people with aphasia. These participants took the Aphasia Language Assessment Test (ADD), Turkish Picture-Naming Test (T-RAT), and Technology Familiarity Assessment, and the words for therapy were determined.

Accelerating multi-coil MR image reconstruction using weak supervision.

Deep-learning-based MR image reconstruction in settings where large fully sampled dataset collection is infeasible requires methods that effectively use both under-sampled and fully sampled datasets. This paper evaluates a weakly supervised, multi-coil, physics-guided approach to MR image reconstruction, leveraging both dataset types, to improve both the quality and robustness of reconstruction. A physics-guided end-to-end variational network (VarNet) is pretrained in a self-supervised manner using a 4 under-sampled dataset following the self-supervised learning via data undersampling (SSDU) methodology.

Computational Pulsatile Flow and Efficiency Analysis of Biocompatible Microfluidic Artificial Lungs for Different Fiber Configurations.

Average-sized microfluidic artificial lungs consisting of rows and columns of fiber bundles with different column to row aspect ratios (AR) are numerically analyzed for flow characteristics, maximum gas transfer performance, minimum pressure drop, and proper wall shear stress (WSS) values in terms of biocompatibility. The flow is fully laminar and assumed to be incompressible and Newtonian. The transport analysis is performed using a combined convection-diffusion model, and the numerical simulations are carried out with the finite element method.

Evaluation of Verbal Working Memory and Phonemic Analysis Skills in Adolescents with Cochlear Implant.

 Adolescents with cochlear implants may have difficulty developing language and memory abilities.  The primary objectives of this study are (1) to evaluate the language skills and verbal working memory performance of early and late diagnosed-intervened cochlear implanted adolescents and (2) to investigate the relationship between the verbal working memory and phonemic analysis skills in adolescents with cochlear implant.  This study included 72 participants with cochlear implant aged between 10 and 18 years.

Effect of helmet use on maxillofacial injuries due to bicycle and scooter accidents: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis.

Maxillofacial injury is a common injury resulting from bicycle (including e-bike) and scooter accidents. With 80,000 admissions to emergency departments in 2019, bicycle accidents account for more than half of all traffic-related emergency department visits in the Netherlands. The United States reports approximately 130,000 injuries and 1000 fatalities related to cycling annually.

Reflux, dysphonia, and dysphagia symptoms in patients with diabetes and their association with diabetic complications.

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) could influence various organs, especially the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart, and blood vessels, and finally results in many irreversible disease-related complications. In this paper, the association between reflux, swallowing, and voice symptoms in patients with DM and the possible effect of diabetic complications on these symptoms were investigated.

Methods: A total of 179 patients with diabetes were included to the study.

Multi-feature mismatch negativity: How can reliable data be recorded in a short time?

Objective: The aim of the study was to conduct multi-feature mismatch negativity (MMN) implementations and identify via a test-retest study the reliability of MMN responses obtained through a 5-stimulus version of the MMN paradigm. It was also aimed to identify a reliable MMN recording number by comparing the MMN responses obtained under conditions of ten and four recordings conditions while making the recording time shorter.

Methods: Twenty-one healthy volunteers, aged between 18 and 36 years, were included in the study.

Vocal outcomes after COVID-19 infection: acoustic voice analyses, durational measurements, self-reported findings, and auditory-perceptual evaluations.

Purpose: The ongoing literature suggests that COVID-19 may have a potential impact on voice characteristics during the infection period. In the current study, we explored how the disease deteriorates different vocal parameters in patients who recovered from COVID-19.

Methods: A total of 80 participants, 40 patients with a prior history of COVID-19 (20 male, 20 female) with a mean age of 39.

Disease related changes in vocal parameters of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Background: As the duration of diabetes progresses, various disease related complications might occur in patients. The main goal of this paper is to compare acoustic and aerodynamic measures of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with a control group of healthy subjects.

Methods: A total of 91 subjects, 51 individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM group) and 40 healthy volunteers (HV group) were participated in the study.

Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Who Have Self-Reported Swallowing Difficulties.

Introduction: People with diabetes frequently have gastrointestinal problems and related deglutition disorders.

Objective: The aims of the present study are to determine the symptomatic swallowing complaints and to evaluate the functionality of oropharyngeal swallowing in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by using the Turkish Eating Assessment Tool-10 (T-EAT-10) and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES).

Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, the T-EAT-10 questionnaire was completed by 121 patients with diabetes, and FEES was planned for each individual whose baseline score of the T-EAT-10 was ≥3.

Evaluation of the possible involvement of Ad-36-induced adipogenesis and coronary artery disease development in mediastinal adipose tissue samples.

Mediastinal fat has been suggested to be associated with cardiovascular diseases such as carotid stiffness, atherosclerosis and coronary artery calcification. We investigated the possible role of Ad-36-induced obesity in the pathogenesis of the coronary artery disease (CAD). Ad-36 DNA was investigated in the anterior mediastinal fat tissue samples of obese adults with CAD.

Numerical investigation of the effects of blood rheology and wall elasticity in abdominal aortic aneurysm under pulsatile flow conditions.

Background: Previous studies on aneurysm modeling have focused on the blood rheology and vessel elasticity separately. The combined effects of blood shear thinning properties and wall elasticity need to be revealed.

Objective: To provide insights on how pulsatile hemodynamics vary with blood rheology and vessel elasticity for a developed abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).

Variable efficacy of TIPSS in the management of ectopic variceal bleeding: a multicentre retrospective study.

Background: Evidence for the efficacy of TIPSS in ectopic variceal bleeding (EctVB) is largely based on relatively small series.

Aim: To define the efficacy of TIPSS in EctVB.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of consecutive patients with chronic liver disease who presented with EctVB and received TIPSS in three tertiary centres in 1992-2016.

Neopterin and soluble CD14 (sCD14) are detected at high levels in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. We aimed to evaluate the role of these plasma immune activation biomarkers, for the indirect assessment of immune activation status of patients with low anti-HCV reactivity and a HCV infection. Low anti-HCV reactivity group (LRG, n: 70), true positive HCV infection group (THG, 30) and healthy control group (HCG, 30) were analyzed in this study.

Opportunistic infections such as cryptosporidiosis and cyclosporiasis are commonly encountered in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). We investigated the existence of opportunistic protozoans that significantly affect the quality of life in HIV-1 infected patients using conventional and molecular methods. The study group comprised 115 HIV-1 positive patients.

Evaluation of Adenovirus-36 (Ad-36) antibody seropositivity and adipokine levels in obese children.

Adenovirus 36 (Ad-36) has recently been suggested as a possible contributor to the current obesity epidemic. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Ad-36 antibodies in obese children, as well as investigate the role of serum leptin and lipid levels in Ad-36-obesity. Seventy-one obese children and 62 non-obese children were included as the patient group (PG), including the healthy control group (HCG), respectively.

Curcumin improves spatial memory and decreases oxidative damage in aged female rats.

Aging induced cognitive impairment has been well documented for many years and several antioxidant strategies have been developed against this impairment. Curcumin is the active component of curcuma longa and has shown antioxidant, antiinflamatory and neuroprotective properties. We hypothesized that curcumin would have an influence on cognitive functions in aged female rats.

Age and sex affect spatial and emotional behaviors in rats: the role of repeated elevated plus maze test.

The effects of diabetes mellitus during cooling on ACh- and KCl-induced responses were investigated in rat urinary bladder. Diabetes was induced in the rats by 50 mg/kg streptozotocin via an intraperitoneal injection. Rats' body and bladder weights were measured.

Response to vasoconstrictor agents by detrusor smooth muscles from cisplatin-treated rats and antioxidant treatment.

The effects of melatonin and quercetin on the contractile responses of cisplatin-treated rat detrusor smooth muscle were tested. Detrusor strips obtained from four separate rat groups (control, cisplatin, melatonin+cisplatin and quercetin+cisplatin) were mounted in 25 mL organ baths containing Krebs-Henseleit solution (KHS) at 37°C, continuously gassed with 95% O₂ and 5% CO₂. The vasoconstriction induced by acetylcholine (ACh) and potassium chloride (KCl) were compared within the groups.
