Purpose: The most frequently used surgical procedures for periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) are debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR), as well as single- or two-stage revision arthroplasty. The choice of surgery is made depending on the full maturation of the biofilm layer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biofilm formation and microbial growth using common PJI-causing agents and compare its development on the implant surface.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) constitutes around 15% of lung cancer cases and stands as the primary cause of cancer-related fatalities in men and the second leading cause in women globally. In this study, our objective was to evaluate the levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) in newly diagnosed extensive-stage SCLC patients without evidence of infection. We aimed to demonstrate that elevated CRP and PCT levels may not solely indicate infection but could also be elevated in malignancies.

The absence of a Food and Drug Administration-approved percutaneous valve technology for the treatment of severe aortic regurgitation (AR) presents a challenge for high-risk patients. In this report, we describe the successful treatment of an 84-year-old male patient suffering from severe symptomatic AR and concomitant cardiorenal syndrome with renal failure using a 34 mm Evolut R (Medtronic) self-expanding transcatheter aortic valve replacement. This intervention resulted in the resolution of AR, cardiorenal syndrome, and congestive heart failure symptoms.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the north-south gradient hypothesis, suggesting that individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in southern regions (like Turkey) tend to have a younger age of onset and milder disease than those in northern regions (like Denmark).
  • In a comparison of 223 treatment-naïve RA patients from Denmark and Turkey, it was found that Danish patients had a later onset age (60 years) and more severe joint symptoms compared to Turkish patients (51 years).
  • The findings support the hypothesis and reveal that Danish patients have more genetic risk factors for RA, prompting the need for future research into the genetic and environmental influences on these regional differences.

  • Ocrelizumab (OCR) shows effectiveness in treating multiple sclerosis (MS) but can lead to a "wearing-off phenomenon" (WoP) prior to infusions.
  • A study involving 409 MS patients found that a substantial number experienced WoP symptoms, with many reporting issues like fatigue and walking difficulties four weeks before their next dose.
  • Factors such as shorter disease duration and longer intervals between doses were associated with increased WoP occurrence, indicating a need for more personalized treatment approaches.

Article Synopsis
  • * It included 116 patients with pSS, assessing salivary flow rates, eye dryness, and psychological health using various patient-reported outcome measures like the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).
  • * Findings indicated lower resilience scores in patients experiencing recurrent parotitis, and those with both dry mouth and dry eyes, suggesting these factors, along with anxiety and depression, may negatively influence psychological resilience in pSS patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored how hesperidin (HES) impacts testicular health in rats exposed to glyphosate (GLP), assessing histopathological and biochemical changes as well as semen characteristics.
  • Rats were divided into four groups: one without GLP or HES (control), one with HES, one with GLP, and one with both GLP and HES.
  • Results indicated that GLP negatively affected sperm quality and testicular tissue, while HES counteracted these effects, improving sperm parameters, antioxidant levels, and reducing oxidative damage.

Limited light availability due to insufficient vertical mixing strongly reduces the applicability of raceway ponds (RWPs). To overcome this and create light-dark (L/D) cycles for enhanced biomass production through improved vertical mixing, vortex-induced vibration (VIV) system was implemented by the authors in a previous study to an existing pilot-scale RWP. In this study, experimental characterization of fluid dynamics for VIV-implemented RWP is carried out.
