The equilibrium potential of an ion species is a crucial concept for medical students, as it is a prerequisite to fully understanding the pathophysiology of K imbalances (hyperkalemia and hypokalemia) in clinical practice. However, it remains a challenging concept because current medical physiology textbooks are too simplistic and overlook several essential points. In this article, we present a total of five small but impactful additions to advance the introduction of the equilibrium potential that will eliminate confusion and facilitate mastery-level comprehension.

Decompression sickness (DCS) is a systemic syndrome that can occur after an environmental pressure reduction. Previously, we showed that the plasmatic tetrameric form of transthyretin (TTR) nearly disappeared in rats suffering DCS but not in asymptomatic ones. In this pilot study, we assessed whether the resistance to DCS could be associated with polymorphism of the gene of TTR.

Article Synopsis
  • Despite progress toward cleaner energy, many households still rely on contaminated biomass for heating, leading to fuel poverty.
  • A case study in a Chilean home showed that using dry Eucalyptus logs produced significantly lower black carbon emissions compared to unclean biomass, which created harmful indoor air quality that lingered for hours.
  • This study underscores the health risks of limited access to clean fuels and highlights the broader issue of fuel poverty in vulnerable communities.

Intensive Care to facilitate Organ Donation (ICOD) consists of the initiation or continuation of intensive care measures in patients with a devastating brain injury (DBI) in whom curative treatment is deemed futile and death by neurological criteria (DNC) is foreseen, to incorporate organ donation into their end-of-life plans. In this study we evaluate the outcomes of patients subject to ICOD and identify radiological and clinical factors associated with progression to DNC. In this first prospective multicenter study we tested by multivariate regression the association of clinical and radiological severity features with progression to DNC.

present transcutaneous carbon dioxide (CO)-tcpCO-monitors suffer from limitations which hamper their widespread use, and call for a new tcpCO measurement technique. However, the progress in this area is hindered by the lack of knowledge in transcutaneous CO diffusion. To address this knowledge gap, this study focuses on investigating the influence of skin temperature on two key skin properties: CO permeability and skin blood flow.

Introduction: the diagnosis of asymptomatic sporadic nonfunctioning pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NF-PNETs) has increased significantly due to the widespread use of high-resolution imaging tests, which is why the most appropriate management at the time of diagnosis is the subject of debate, as is how to follow-up patients.

Aims: the objective of this study was to analyze the frequency of imaging and endoscopic studies performed during long-term follow-up.

Methods: a retrospective review was performed of a database collected between January 2008 and December 2020 of patients with an incidental diagnosis of small NF-PNETs; follow-up was closed in March 2023.

A selenium-containing metal-organic framework with remarkable antioxidant capacity and ROS-scavenging activity was constructed by a controlled encapsulation approach of a glycoconjugate mimetic, specifically a sp-iminoglycolipid bearing a selenoureido fragment (DSeU), within a zeolitic-imidazolate framework exoskeleton. Biocompatible and homogeneous nanosized particles of ∼70 nm (DSeU@ZIF8) were obtained, which could be efficiently internalized in cells, overcoming the poor solubility in biological media and limited bioavailability of glycolipids. The ZIF-particle served as nanocarrier for the intracellular delivery of the selenocompound to cells, promoted by the acidic pH inside endosomes/lysosomes.

Decompression sickness (DCS) with neurological disorders includes an inappropriate inflammatory response which degenerates slowly, even after the disappearance of the bubbles. There is high inter-individual variability in terms of the occurrence of DCS that could have been mastered by the selection and then the breeding of DCS-resistant rats. We hypothesized the selection of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) linked to autoimmunity operated upon a generation of a DCS-resistant strain of rats.

Atherosclerosis is initiated by the activation of endothelial cells that allows monocyte adhesion and transmigration through the vascular wall. The accumulation of uremic toxins such as indoxyl sulphate (IS) and p-cresol (PC) has been associated with atherosclerosis. Currently, miRNAs play a crucial role in the regulation of monocyte activation, adhesion, and trans-endothelial migration.
