Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with pulmonary embolism, a condition mechanistically related to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Our objective was to identify whether VEGF levels, measured at hospital admission, may predict the occurrence of pulmonary embolism (and other thrombosis) during hospitalization. Of a total of 139 patients included in the study, a pulmonary embolism occurred in 4%, other thrombosis in 16%, and 80% remained thrombus free.

Urolithiasis is a very frequent illness found in Argentina; however, stone analysis is not routinely performed. In this work, 86 renal calculi (from cities of Luján and San Antonio de Areco, State of Buenos Aires, Argentina) have been analyzed by infrared and Raman spectroscopies, and the results correlated with the main possible pathological conditions. Calcium oxalate monohydrate (whewellite) and mixtures of calcium oxalate monohydrate and carbonate apatite were the most frequent compounds found in our samples.

Objective: To evaluate in a prospective trial two surgical technique routinely used for orbital decompression in Graves' disease ophthalmopathy.

Patients And Methods: Patients with Graves' disease exophthalmus (greater than 22 mm) that was euthyroid for at least six months after treatment were admitted to the study and randomly assigned to two groups, twenty six orbits in 17 patients were surgically decompressed with the Walsh and Ogura technique (group I) and 18 orbits in 18 patients were decompressed with Kennedy's surgical approach (group II).
